Quantitative measurements are important for imaging fluid content in porous media. Conventional MRI methods suffer from contrast because of relaxation times in porous media, resulting in measurements of apparent fluid content, not the true fluid content. We compare four magnetic resonance imaging methods for fluid content imaging in several water‐saturated reservoir core plugs: frequency‐encoded spin echo, single point ramped imaging with T1 enhancement, hybrid spin echo single point imaging (SE‐SPI), and T2 mapping SE‐SPI. 1‐D profiles obtained with each method were compared in terms of image quality, image sensitivity, and quantification of water content. The image quality of short T2 lifetime samples suffered from blurring in hybrid SE‐SPI images. Image sensitivity was the highest in the profiles obtained with frequency‐encoded spin echo. The quantification of frequency‐encoded spin echo, T2 mapping SE‐SPI, and hybrid SE‐SPI suffered in core plugs with a significant population of short T2 components because of T2 attenuation. The ability to discriminate between call types and callers as well as more subtle information about the importance of a call has been documented in a range of species. This type of discrimination is also important in the vibrotactile environment for species that communicate via vibrations. It has recently been shown that African elephants (Loxodonta africana) can detect seismic cues, but it is not known whether they discriminate seismic information from noise. In a series of experiments, familiar and unfamiliar alarm calls were transmitted seismically to wild African elephant family groups. Elephants respond significantly to the alarm calls of familiar herds (p=0.004) but not to the unfamiliar calls and two different controls, thus demonstrating the ability of elephants to discriminate subtle differences between seismic calls given in the same context. If elephants use the seismic environment to detect and discriminate between conspecific calls, based on the familiarity of the caller or some other physical property, they may be using the ground as a very sophisticated sounding board.  相似文献

Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) science and engineering practices are ways of eliciting the reasoning and applying foundational ideas in science. As research has revealed barriers to states and schools adopting the NGSS, this mixed‐methods study attempts to identify characteristics of professional development (PD) that will support NGSS adoption and to improve teacher readiness. In‐service science teachers from across the nation were targeted for the survey and responses represented 38 states. Research questions included: How motivated and prepared are in‐service 7–12 teachers to use NGSS science and engineering practices? What is the profile of 7–12 in‐service teachers who are motivated and feel prepared to use NGSS science and engineering practices? The study revealed that teachers identified engineering most frequently as a PD need to improve their NGSS readiness. High school teachers rated themselves as more prepared than middle school and all teachers who use Modeling Instruction expressed higher NGSS readiness. These findings and their specificity contribute to current knowledge, and can be utilized by districts in selecting PD to support teachers in preparing to implement the NGSS successfully.  相似文献

A three-channel spectrometer (3CS) based on a commercial digital camera was developed to distinguish among tens of large (>100 nm), anisotropic plasmonic particles with various shapes, orientations, and compositions on a surface simultaneously. Using band pass filters and polarizers, the contrast of 3CS images could be enhanced to identify specific orientation and composition characteristics of gold and gold-silver nanopyramids and as well as the direction of the longest arm of gold nanostars.  相似文献

We explore the precision of neural timing in a model neural system with n identical input neurons whose firing time in response to stimulation is chosen from a density f. These input neurons stimulate a target cell which fires when it receives m hits within ? msec. We prove that the density of the firing time of the target cell converges as ?→0 to the input density f raised to the mth and normalized. We give conditions for convergence of the density in L1, pointwise, and uniformly as well as conditions for the convergence of the standard deviations.  相似文献

The development of a new method for stereoselective glycosylation with glycosyl trichloroacetimidate donors employing cationic palladium(II), Pd(CH(3)CN)(4)(BF(4))(2), is described. This process employs Pd(CH(3)CN)(4)(BF(4))(2) as an efficient activator, providing access to a variety of disaccharides and glycopeptides. This reaction is highly stereoselective and proceeds under mild conditions with low catalyst loading. Interestingly, this palladium catalysis directs beta-glucosylations in the absence of classical neighboring group participation.  相似文献

Shortwave infrared (SWIR) dyes are characterized by their ability to absorb light from 900 to 1400 nm, which is ideal for deep tissue imaging owing to minimized light scattering and interference from endogenous pigments. An approach to access such molecules is to tune the photophysical properties of known near-infrared dyes. Herein, we report the development of a series of easily accessible (three steps) SWIR xanthene dyes based on a dibenzazepine donor conjugated to thiophene ( SCR-1 ), thienothiophene ( SCR-2 ), or bithiophene ( SCR-3 ). We leverage the fact that SCR-1 undergoes a bathochromic shift when aggregated for in vivo studies by developing a ratiometric nanoparticle for NO ( rNP-NO ), which we employed to successfully visualize pathological levels of nitric oxide in a drug-induced liver injury model via deep tissue SWIR photoacoustic (PA) imaging. Our work demonstrates how easily this dye series can be utilized as a component in nanosensor designs for imaging studies.  相似文献

A number of biochemical processes rely on isoprenoids, including the post-translational modification of signaling proteins and the biosynthesis of a wide array of compounds. Photoactivatable analogues have been developed to study isoprenoid utilizing enzymes such as the isoprenoid synthases and prenyltransferases. While these initial analogues proved to be excellent structural analogues with good cross-linking capability, they lack the stability needed when the goals include isolation of cross-linked species, tryptic digestion, and subsequent peptide sequencing. Here, the synthesis of a benzophenone-based farnesyl diphosphate analogue containing a stable phosphonophosphate group is described. Inhibition kinetics, photolabeling experiments, as well as X-ray crystallographic analysis with a protein prenyltransferase are described, verifying this compound as a good isoprenoid mimetic. In addition, the utility of this new analogue was explored by using it to photoaffinity label crude protein extracts obtained from Hevea brasiliensis latex. Those experiments suggest that a small protein, rubber elongation factor, interacts directly with farnesyl diphosphate during rubber biosynthesis. These results indicate that this benzophenone-based isoprenoid analogue will be useful for identifying enzymes that utilize farnesyl diphosphate as a substrate.  相似文献
