Fiber-optic-based absolute displacement sensors at 1500 nm by means of a variant of channeled spectrum signal recovery

An absolute displacement-sensing system based on channeled spectrum processing capable of simultaneous interrogation of fiber Bragg gratings and fiber-optic interferometric sensors is presented in which the role of the optical spectrometer is performed by a scanning Fabry-Perot filter. We demonstrate a resolution of +/-50 nm with an estimated dynamic range of 1 part in 10(5).

A geometric parametrization for the virtual Euler characteristics of the moduli spaces of real and complex algebraic curves

We determine an expression for the virtual Euler characteristics of the moduli spaces of -pointed real ) and complex () algebraic curves. In particular, for the space of real curves of genus with a fixed point free involution, we find that the Euler characteristic is where is the th Bernoulli number. This complements the result of Harer and Zagier that the Euler characteristic of the moduli space of complex algebraic curves is

The proof uses Strebel differentials to triangulate the moduli spaces and some recent techniques for map enumeration to count cells. The approach involves a parameter that permits specialization of the formula to the real and complex cases. This suggests that itself may describe the Euler characteristics of some related moduli spaces, although we do not yet know what these spaces might be.

     

Weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensates under rotation: mean-field versus exact solutions

We consider a weakly interacting, harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensed gas under rotation and investigate the connection between the energies obtained from mean-field calculations and from exact diagonalizations in a subspace of degenerate states. From the latter we derive an approximation scheme valid in the thermodynamic limit of many particles. Mean-field results are shown to emerge as the correct leading-order approximation to exact calculations in the same subspace.     

Evidence for 2D precursors and interdiffusion in the evolution of self-assembled CdSe quantum dots on ZnSe

The evolution of self-assembled CdSe quantum dots deposited on (and subsequently capped by) ZnSe was investigated on a series of samples grown by molecular beam epitaxy, with CdSe coverages from 0.5 to 2.6 monolayers. The samples were investigated by cross-sectional scanning transmission electron microscopy, as well as macro- and microphotoluminescence. The results clearly indicated a coexistence of 2D ZnCdSe platelets and 3D islands, showing clearly that the platelets act as precursors for the formation of the 3D islands.     

Flames in narrow circular tubes

We examine an axi-symmetric deflagration located in a tube with thermally active walls. It is noted that the flame-in-tube configuration defines a classical edge-flame, a flame in a shear flow for which there is a water-shed solution for a critical value of the Damköhler number (D), ignition front solutions for larger values of D, and failure wave solutions for smaller values. We examine semi-infinite tubes with a heat flux imposed at the tube wall ends, to simulate experiments reported in the 30th Symposium. We identify parameters for which stable solutions are obtained at certain flow rates, but unstable solutions are generated at higher flow rates, followed by stable solutions at still higher flow rates. These solutions are consistent with the experimental record. Instability leads either to regular oscillations or to a violent process characterized by quenching and re-ignition.     

Heteroatomic molecular clusters derived from Group 15 Zintl ion cages: synthesis and isolation of [M2(HP7)2](2-) (M=Ag, Au), two novel cluster anions exhibiting metallophilic interactions

Ethylenediamine (en) solutions of K(3)P(7) and 2,2,2-crypt (4,7,13,16,21,24-hexaoxa-1,10-diazabicyclo[8.8.8]hexacosane) were reacted with the homoleptic group 11 complexes [M(nbe)(3)][SbF(6)] (M = Ag, Au; nbe = norbornene) yielding two novel cluster anions, [M(2)(HP(7))(2)](2-), both of which were isolated in low crystalline yields as [K(2,2,2-crypt)](2)[M(2)(HP(7))(2)] (M = Ag (1) and Au (2)). Optimization of the reaction conditions by incorporation of a proton source (ammonium tetraphenylborate) and the replacement of the light-sensitive nbe adducts of silver and gold with the chloride salts MCl (M = Ag, Au) was found to greatly increase the yield and purity in which 1 and 2 were isolated. Compounds 1 and 2 were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, electrospray ionization mass-spectrometry (ESI- MS), elemental analysis, and (1)H and (31)P NMR spectroscopy. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the cluster anions were also conducted.     

Double prompt photon production at high transverse momentum byπ − on protons at 280 GeV/c

A search for pairs of highp _T prompt photons produced in hydrogen by a 280 GeV/c incidentπ ^- beam has been carried out using a fine-grained electromagnetic calorimeter and the Omega spectrometer at the CERN SPS. Clear evidence for the existence of such events is found with a six standard deviation signal forp _T >3.0 GeV/c. The cross-sections are consistent with beyond leading order QCD calculations. A discussion on the determination of α _s is also presented.
