Mapping quantitative skills across the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) curricula will help educators identify gaps and duplication in the teaching, practice and assessment of the necessary skills. This paper describes the development and implementation of quantitative skills mapping tools for courses in STEM at a regional university that offers both on-campus and distance modes of study. Key elements of the mapping project included the identification of key graduate quantitative skills, the development of curriculum mapping tools to record in which unit(s) and at what level of attainment each quantitative skill is taught, practised and assessed, and identification of differences in the way quantitative skills are developed for on-campus and distance students. Particular attention is given to the differences that are associated with intensive schools, which consist of concentrated periods of face-to-face learning over a three-four day period, and are available to distance education students enrolled in STEM units. The detailed quantitative skills mapping process has had an impact on the review of first-year mathematics units, resulted in crucial changes to the curriculum in a number of courses, and contributed to a more integrated approach, and a collective responsibility, to the development of students' quantitative skills for both face-to-face and online modes of learning. 相似文献

Crystallization-induced emission enhancement (CIEE) was demonstrated for the first time for electrochemilunimescence (ECL) with two new benzosiloles. Compared with their solution, the films of the two benzosiloles gave CIEE of 24 and 16 times. The mechanism of the CIEE-ECL was examined by spooling ECL spectroscopy, X-ray crystal structure analysis, photoluminescence, and DFT calculations. This CIEE-ECL system is a complement to the well-established aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) systems. Unique intermolecular interactions are noted in the crystalline chromophore. The first heterogeneous ECL system is established for organic compounds with highly hydrophobic properties. 相似文献

The use of a second electrospray nebuliser has proved to be highly successful for exact mass measurement during high-performance liquid chromatography/Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (HPLC/FTICRMS). Much improved accuracy and precision of mass measurement were afforded by the introduction of the internal calibration solution, thus overcoming space charge issues due to the lack of control over relative ion abundances of the species eluting from the HPLC column. Further, issues of suppression of ionisation, observed when using a T-piece method, are addressed and this simple system has significant benefits over other more elaborate approaches providing data that compares very favourably with these other approaches. The technique is robust, flexible and transferable and can be used in conjunction with HPLC, infusion or flow injection analysis (FIA) to provide constant internal calibration signals to allow routine, accurate and precise mass measurements to be recorded. 相似文献

Magnetic Fe(2)O(3) nanorods with low cell toxicity were successfully synthesized via a wet-chemical method. In vivo studies with a rabbit model show that the nanorods exhibit excellent T(2) signal enhancement. This work demonstrates that magnetic nanorods may provide a new type of MR enhancement agent for use in biomedical applications. 相似文献

Arsenic speciation is a subject that is developing all the time both from improvements in analytical techniques and from increases
in toxicological understanding. Despite speciation methods being widely developed, arsenic speciation is not routinely offered
as an analysis in clinical laboratory. The work in this paper describes a simple routine method for arsenic speciation that
could be easily implemented in clinical laboratories. The method described, a new, fast analytical method for arsenic speciation,
is reported using micro-liquid chromatography hyphenated to an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (μLC-ICP-MS).
The method uses a low-pressure delivery six-port valve with a 5 cm anion exchange column, which allows a fully resolved separation
of five arsenic species (arsenobetaine [AB], arsenite [As3+], arsenate [As5+], mono-methylarsonic acid [MMA5+] and dimethylarsinic acid [DMA5+]) in urine in just 6 min. This fast analytical method offers an arsenic speciation method that is feasible for a laboratory
that does not have the capability for a dedicated arsenic speciation LC-ICP-MS instrument. The micro-LC system is small, easy
to install and is fully integrated with the ICP-MS software. The results reported here are from urine samples from 65 workers
in a semiconductor work providing a sample for their routine biological monitoring to assess workplace exposure. Control samples
from 20 unexposed people were also determined. Results show that the semiconductor workers exhibit very low levels of arsenic
in their urine samples, similar to the levels in the controls, and thus are not significantly exposed to arsenic. Care must
be taken when interpreting urinary arsenic species results because it is not always possible to differentiate between dietary

The presentation of bioactive ligands on biomaterial surfaces is often confounded by the adsorption of proteins present in the biological milieu, rendering any type of cellular response nonspecific. We have engineered a polyelectrolyte complex membrane that demonstrates specific adhesion of various cell types for both two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) cell culture systems. Specific cell adhesion is achieved by a three-tiered structure: a silica cross-linked polycation as the bottom (first) tier, a nonfouling polyanion-poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) conjugate as the intermediate (second) tier, and the cell-adhesion ligand as the top (third) tier. Each tier of the membrane was characterized in terms of chemical composition and dimensions. Epithelial cells (primary human cortical renal cells and a hepatocellular carcinoma cell line) cultured on the membranes exhibited little cell attachment on the polyanion-PEG second tier and good cell adhesion on the RGD-modified third tier. Thus, the second tier allowed the effect of cell adhesion due to the ligand (third tier) to be isolated and distinguished from nonspecific cell attachment to the first tier. For the culturing of cells in three dimensions, the three-tiered membrane system was applied using a highly swellable chitosan membrane as the first tier. The resulting cell-membrane construct was uniformly dispersed and centrifuged to form a matrix that interacted intimately with cells in the form of a pellet. Presentation of RGD in the latter format enhanced the viability of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) over controls without RGD. 相似文献

This paper presents a theoretical study of electrochemical affinity biosensors for the detection of DNA/protein that utilize nanoparticle labels for signal amplification. This study analyzes the effects of binding and mass transport of the analytes on biosensor performance by using numerical simulations. Four cases were considered: 1) nanoparticles used to increase the loading of an electroactive species, or used as catalysts under pseudo‐first‐order conditions; 2) nanoparticles used as ultramicroelectrode arrays for the electrolysis of large concentrations of substrate; 3) nanoparticles used as seeds to deposit electrochemically detectable species; and 4) nanoparticles used to mediate the deposition of electrocatalysts. By using nanoparticle labels, high sensitivity is possible under all conditions considered. However, theoretical findings suggested that nonspecific adsorption could be more problematic in cases 2–4 due to the mismatch between the chemistry of surface binding and the principle of signal amplification that originates from the effect of mass transport. Under these conditions, any given signal would plateau at a much lower analyte concentration, well before the analyte binding had actually reached a plateau. In this paper we study the general reconstruction of a compactly supported function from its Fourier coefficients using compactly supported shearlet systems. We assume that only finitely many Fourier samples of the function are accessible and based on this finite collection of measurements an approximation is sought in a finite dimensional shearlet reconstruction space. We analyze this sampling and reconstruction process by a recently introduced method called generalized sampling. In particular by studying the stable sampling rate of generalized sampling we then show stable recovery of the signal is possible using an almost linear rate. Furthermore, we compare the result to the previously obtained rates for wavelets. 相似文献

Cellular invasion requires careful regulation of the cell migration and apoptotic signaling cascades, allowing cell movement and survival of the emigrating populations. Components of the endosomal machinery are involved in these processes, and in particular the role of small GTPases of the Rab family has become appreciated. Rab5 is best known for its role in regulating the trafficking of early endosomes, however, it has recently been appreciated to associate with and regulate the routing of complexes containing integrins, the primary cellular receptors for the extracellular matrix. The association regulates the spatio temporal activation of signals of downstream growth factors and integrins. Rab proteins have also been linked to apoptosis mediated by cell surface death receptors, which elicit the activation of the death cascade via activation of caspase 8. Recently, the link between trafficking, apoptosis and cell migration was strengthened, as Rab5 was determined to work in conjunction with caspase 8 in promoting tumor cell motility and metastasis by regulating β1 integrin traffic. The capacity to connect and regulate these pathways identifies Rab5 as a key player in future studies of cell migration and tumor dissemination. 相似文献
