Labile Interactions and Inert Entities in Supramolecular Chemistry—the Identification of Recognition Mechanisms for Macrobicyclic Amine Complexes

Consideration of crystallographic data concerning metal complexes of hexa-azabicyclo[6.6.6]icosane, “sarcophagine”, and various derivatives provides evidence for the importance of hydrogen-bonding, labile metal ion coordination, aliphatic- and aromatic-group interactions in determining the lattice structures. These “cage amine” complexes not only involve different metal ions, almost all rendered kinetically inert towards substitution by their complexation, but they can be obtained in conformationally locked forms and with a wide variety of substituents, so that they have considerable potential as supramolecular tectons.     

Stereochemistry in functionalized macrocycle complexes: control of hydroxyl substituent orientation

Use of a hydroxyl-functionalized open chain tetramine in a template reaction based on its Cu(II) complex leads, after reduction, to a new tetraaza macrocycle with both amino and hydroxyl substituents. The macrocycle is formed predominantly as its trans (anti) isomer, though the cis form is detectable and both have been structurally characterized in the form of their metal complexes. Although both the Cu(II) and the Co(III) complexes of the tetramine precursor ligand have the hydroxyl group in an axial position of a chair six-membered chelate ring, the trans macrocycle forms Co(III) complexes with this substituent in both equatorial and axial positions.     

BINOL-derived phosphoramidites in asymmetric hydrogenation: can the presence of a functionality in the amino group influence the catalytic outcome?

In discovering the remarkable catalytic properties of BINOL-derived phosphoramidites (binoP-NR(2)), Dutch researchers recently achieved a long-awaited breakthrough in asymmetric catalysis. For the first time, easily accessible monodentate chiral P(III) ligands turned out to provide high enantioselectivities when used in rhodium-catalysed olefin hydrogenation. The simplest ligand representative of this family is MonoPhos, which can be made straightforwardly from BINOL and hexamethylphosphorous triamide. Since the first publication dealing with such catalysts (J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2000), a variety of binoP-NRR' ligands have been reported in which the amino group bears a functional substituent or a stereogenic centre. This critical review examines the impact of the presence of such a functionality in the amino group on catalytic olefin hydrogenation reactions.     

Pseudo-steady-state solutions for solidification in a wedge

Polubarinova-Kochina's analytical differential equation methodis used to determine the pseudo-steady-state solution to problemsinvolving the freezing (solidification) of wedges of liquidwhich are initially at their fusion temperature. In particular,we consider four distinct problems for wedges which are: freezingwith the same constant boundary temperature, freezing with thesame constant boundary heat fluxes, freezing with distinct constantboundary temperatures and freezing with distinct constant fluxesat the boundaries. For the last two problems, a Heun's differentialequation with an unknown singularity is derived, which in bothcases admits a particularly elegant simple solution for thespecial case when the wedge angle is . The moving boundariesobtained are shown pictorially.
