General linear methods for Volterra integral equations

We investigate the class of general linear methods of order p and stage order q=p for the numerical solution of Volterra integral equations of the second kind. Construction of highly stable methods based on the Schur criterion is described and examples of methods of order one and two which have good stability properties with respect to the basic test equation and the convolution one are given.     

The single particle dynamics of iodine in the Sachs-Teller regime: an inelastic x-ray scattering study

The high frequency dynamics of liquid iodine has been investigated by deep inelastic x-ray scattering at exchanged wave-vectors (q) ranging from 2.5 to 15 A?(-1). The experimental data have been analyzed in the frame of the Sachs-Teller theory of the molecular spectrum while accounting for final state corrections to the lineshape. The performed data analysis carries insights on physical quantities as relevant as the mean rototranslational kinetic energy and the mean square Laplacian of the intermolecular potential. In both cases the measured values are consistent with corresponding theoretical expectations.

The effect of topical anesthesia on vocal fold motion

The objective of this study was to determine if topical anesthesia to the larynx and pharynx affects vocal fold motion during dynamic voice evaluation with transnasal flexible endoscopy. Transnasal dynamic laryngeal examinations of 10 patients with no voice complaints were evaluated by five blinded fellowship-trained laryngologists. Each patient was examined before and after application of topical anesthetic. Reviewers rated briskness of right and left vocal fold movement and longitudinal tension on a visual analogue scale. Statistical comparisons were made between individual subject scores before and after anesthetic application. Inter-rater reliability was also assessed. No statistical difference was observed between subject scores before and after anesthetic application. Average intraclass correlation coefficients were 0.643 and 0.591 for pre- and postanesthesia scores, respectively. Application of topical anesthesia to the larynx and pharynx does not affect vocal fold motion.     

Failure of Polynomial Approximation on Polynomially Convex Subsets of the Sphere

Carboxyalkyl peptoid PNAs: synthesis and hybridization properties

N^γ-Carboxyalkyl modified peptide nucleic acids (PNAs), containing the four canonical nucleobases, were prepared via solid-phase oligomerization. The inserted peptoid monomers 1 and 2 were constructed through simple synthetic procedures, utilizing appropriate glycidol and iodoalkyl electrophiles. Thermal denaturation studies, performed with complementary antiparallel DNA strands, demonstrated that the length of the N^γ-side chain strongly influences the modified PNAs hybridization properties. Moreover, multiple negative charges on the oligoamide backbone, when present on γ-nitrogen C₆ side chains proved to be beneficial for the oligomers’ water solubility and DNA hybridization specificity.
