Bioactive clerodane diterpenes from roots of Carex distachya

Two new clerodane diterpenes were isolated from roots of Carex distachya Desf., a perennial plant widely distributed in the coastal area of the Mediterranean basin. Chemical characterization of the metabolites was carried out mainly by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy. The isolated compounds influenced either positively or negatively the plant growth (root and shoot elongation) of three coexisting herbaceous species.     

Spectral Asymptotics for Higher-Order Ordinary Differential Equations

This paper gives one-term componentwise asymptotics for theM and spectral matrices of a self-adjoint realisation of aneven-order ordinary differential expression. The underlyinginterval is assumed to have at least one regular endpoint, andthe boundary conditions are supposed to be separated. Cationic calix[4]arenes as anion-selective ionophores

1,3-Alternate cationic calix[4]arene proved highly selective for proton/halogens symport transport and showed antiproliferative activity against murine monocyte/macrophage J774.A1 cancer cells.     

Permanence and global stability of a class of discrete epidemic models

TRPM5-expressing microvillous cells in the main olfactory epithelium

Background  

The main olfactory epithelium (MOE) in the nasal cavity detects a variety of air borne molecules that provide information regarding the presence of food, predators and other relevant social and environmental factors. Within the epithelium are ciliated sensory neurons, supporting cells, basal cells and microvillous cells, each of which is distinct in morphology and function. Arguably, the least understood, are the microvillous cells, a population of cells that are small in number and whose function is not known. We previously found that in a mouse strain in which the TRPM5 promoter drives expression of the green fluorescent protein (GFP), a population of ciliated olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs), as well as a population of cells displaying microvilli-like structures is labeled. Here we examined the morphology and immunocytochemical properties of these microvillous-like cells using immunocytochemical methods.

A simple, elementary proof of the existence, uniqueness, and
smoothness of solutions to ordinary differential equations is given. In fact, it is shown that for a differential equation of class , the successive approximations of Picard converge in the -sense.

     

Semiempirical study of the electronic and optical properties of the Er(8-hydroxyquinolinate)3 complex

We use a simple quantum chemical semiempirical procedure to study the electronic properties of organic-lanthanide complexes, taking as a model system Er(8-hydroxyquinolinate)3. Among the problems inherent to such a study is the fact that the lanthanide ion has never been parametrized in any of the standard semiempirical Hamiltonians. To overcome this difficulty, the lanthanide ion is replaced by a different but somewhat similar parametrized ion, or merely by a point charge. Good agreement with experiment, where available, is obtained, particularly in the former case. In fact, the electronic properties of the complex (apart from the emission properties) are seen to be scarcely affected by the nature of the lanthanide ion itself, but the core interactions between the metal ion and the ligand units play a relevant role, also in the calculation of the excitation energies. In particular, the ordering and separation of both singlet and triplet excited states are affected. The main conclusion is that to describe in detail the mechanism of the energy-transfer process occurring in the complex it is essential to take into account the geometry relaxation effects in the excited states.     

A discrete time version for models of population dynamics in the presence of an infection

We present a set of difference equations which represents the discrete counterpart of a large class of continuous model concerning the dynamics of an infection in an organism or in a host population. The limiting behavior of the discrete model is studied and a threshold parameter playing the role of the basic reproduction number is derived.     

Calix[4]arene-cholic acid conjugates: a new class of efficient synthetic ionophores

The synthesis of a new class of amphiphilic calix[4]arene-based ionophores, relying on direct reductive amination as a key step, and the evaluation of their H+ and Na+ transporting properties is described.
