Diastereoselective Synthesis of a Hydroazulene Derivative by Tandem Michael-Wittig Reactions

The reaction of a cyclic phosphonium ylide [ 1 ] with enoate 2 gives a hydroazulene derivative with stereoselectivity.     

Comparison of retention behavior of oligolysine and oligoarginine in ion-pairing chromatography using heptafluorobutyric acid

This paper describes the retention behavior of oligolysine and oligoarginine peptides of different lengths as a function of heptafluorobutyric acid (HFBA) concentration in ion-pairing reversed-phase chromatography in isocratic elution. A mixture of oligolysine and a mixture of oligoarginine with number of amino acid residues (dp) from two to eight were conveniently prepared by one-pot protease-catalyzed synthesis. Analysis of the logarithm of the retention factor k as a function of [HFBA] for each oligopeptide component, using a closed pairing model, provided values for (1) number (n) of paired HFBA anions per peptide molecule, (2) equilibrium constant (K _ip,m) for ion pairing between oligopeptides and HFBA anions, and (3) product of the phase ratio and the distribution constant of the paired oligopeptide between the mobile and stationary phases (βK _d,ip). We found that βK _d,ip of oligoarginine is larger compared with oligolysine having the same dp. A linear relationship was obtained for ln βK _d,ip as a function of n?+?g?·?dp. By optimizing constant g separately for oligolysine and oligoarginine, we determined that g is larger for oligoarginine, in agreement with the higher hydrophobicity of arginine residues. Plotting the fraction of paired oligoarginine and oligolysine as a function of [HFBA] shows that the cooperative effect in forming ion pairs is greater for oligoarginine than oligolysine.

A Convenient General Access to α-Sulfenylated Acetophenones and Alkanones

Friedel-Crafts acylation of arenes with methylthio- (1) or phenylthio-acetyl chloride (2) provides ready access to α-methylthio- or α-phenylthio-substituted acetophenones. The acyl chlorides 1 and 2 reacted also with organoaluminum reagents to give α-sulfenylated alkanones.     

Highly meso-Diastereoselective Pinacol Coupling of Aromatic Aldehydes Mediated by Al Powder/Copper Sulfate in Water

Pinacol-type coupling reaction products presenting a high meso-diastereoselectivity (the ratio dl/meso was 4/96 up to 1/99) were obtained in fair to good yields (24–69%) using several aromatic aldehydes as starting materials and aluminium powder/copper sulfate as catalysts, in water, under reflux conditions.     

Isotopic dependence of the giant monopole resonance in the even-A 112-124Sn isotopes and the asymmetry term in nuclear incompressibility

The strength distributions of the giant monopole resonance (GMR) have been measured in the even-A Sn isotopes (A=112-124) with inelastic scattering of 400-MeV alpha particles in the angular range 0 degrees -8.5 degrees . We find that the experimentally observed GMR energies of the Sn isotopes are lower than the values predicted by theoretical calculations that reproduce the GMR energies in 208Pb and 90Zr very well. From the GMR data, a value of Ktau = -550 +/- 100 MeV is obtained for the asymmetry term in the nuclear incompressibility.     

Discotic Liquid Crystals of Transition Metal Complexes, 19: Discotic Mesomorphism and Double Clearing Behavior of Octakis(dialkoxyphenyl)phthalocyanine Derivatives

Eight novel octakis(3,4-dialkoxyphenyl)- phthalocyanine derivatives, Cn-M (2, M=2H; 3, M=Ni; 4, M=Cu; a, decyloxy; b, undecyloxy; c, dodecyloxy), have been synthesized and characterized. It was found that each of the derivatives exhibits discotic liquid crystalline properties, and that each of the Cn–Cu (4) derivatives has two kinds of D_rd2( P 2₁/ a ) mesophases. These Cn–Cu (4a,b,c) and C₁₂–2H (2c) derivatives exhibit a unique double clearing behavior.     

New and efficient synthesis of azabicyclo[4.4.0]alkane amino acids by Rh-catalyzed cyclohydrocarbonylation

[reaction: see text] Highly efficient syntheses of azabicyclo[4.4.0]alkane amino acids were achieved by Rh-catalyzed cyclohydrocarbonylation of dipeptides bearing a terminal olefin moiety and a heteroatom nucleophile.     

Off-resonant fifth-order response function for two-dimensional Raman spectroscopy of liquids CS2 and H2O

The off-resonant fifth-order response functions for two-dimensional (2D) Raman spectroscopy of molecular liquids CS2 and H2O are investigated by using molecular dynamics calculation. This spectroscopy, able to deal with a phase space dynamics, shows the existence of nodal lines in several polarization tensor elements [see L. Kaufman et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 207402 (2002) for experimental results]. The nodal property is found to arise from the dynamical couplings among rotational modes, not accounted for in a normal mode picture. The effects of anharmonicities and "mode coupling through polarizability" are also investigated by comparing the 2D Raman signal with a constant temperature velocity reassignment echo method.
