Yb (Ba, Sr)2Cu4O8: a “124” phase superconductor with a reduced unit cell volume

Yb(Ba_1−xSr_x)₂Cu₄O₈ (0.1x0.3) superconductors of the YBa₂Cu₄O₈(“124”) structure were successfully synthesized using an O₂-hot-isostaticc-pressing (HIP) technique. The samples were characterized with respect to the crystal structure and superconducting properties. The lattice parameters of the samples decreased as the substitution of Sr for Ba proceeded. The superconducting transition temperatures of all the Yb-“124” samples were more or less the same, being around 80 K.     

Some fatty acids having an O-heterocycle in their terminal positions. I. ω-(3-Chromonyl)alkanoic acids

Some ω-(3-chromonyl)alkanoic acid derivatives, 1a and 2a , n = 4, 5; 3a, 4a and 5a , n = 2-6, were synthesized by cyclization of corresponding methyl ω-(2-hydroxybenzoyl)alkanoates 7b or ethyl ω-(2,4-dihydroxybenzoyl)alkanoates 8b with N,N-dimethylformamide-dimethyl acetal or acetic anhydride-DBU followed by hydrolysis.     

Electromagnetic properties of baryons in the quark model

We use the non-relativistic harmonic oscillator quark model to study electromagnetic properties of baryons. We show that the wave function radius can be determined very precisely (within 2 ～ 3% error) studying the electromagnetic mass difference. The obtained value (R² = 2.75 GeV^?2) is much smaller than that which is widely believed (6 GeV^? ? R² ? 16 GeV^?2).We use this value to study photo- and electro-production processes. It is shown that if this small R² is used and if the amplitude is calculated in the frame where the non-relativistic approximation is the best, the predicted results for these processes (including the helicity structures of D₁₃ and F₁₅) agree with the experimental data remarkably well.     

Interaction information and Markov chain

The problem of multivariate information analysis is considered. First, the interaction information in each dimension is defined analogously according to McGill [4] and then applied to Markov chains. The property of interaction information zero deeply relates to a certain class of weakly dependent random variables. For homogeneous, recurrent Markov chains with m states, m ≥ n ≥3, the zero criterion of n-dimensional interaction information is achieved only by (n ? 2)-dependent Markov chains, which are generated by some nilpotent matrices. Further for Gaussian Markov chains, it gives the decomposition rule of the variables into mutually correlated subchains.
