Regioselective oxidation of internal olefins bearing neighboring oxygen functions by means of palladium catalysts. Preparation of β-alkoxy or acetoxy ketones from allyl and homoallyl ethers or esters

A new preparative method of β- and γ-alkoxy (acetoxy) ketones, which are important precursors of vinyl ketones and 1,4-diketones, respectively, is presented. With PdCl₂/CuCl/O₂ or PdCl₂/p-benzoquinone catalyst system, internal olefins bearing allylic alkoxy or acetoxy group underwent regioselective oxidation to form the corresponding β-alkoxy or β-acetoxy ketones. Similarly, γ-acetoxy ketones were obtained from homoallyl acetates having internal olefins with high regioselectivity.     

Determination of conjugated bile acids in human urine by high-performance liquid chromatography with chemiluminescence detection.

A qualitative and quantitative analysis of the conjugated 1 beta- and 6 alpha-hydroxy bile acids, including common bile acids, in human urine using high-performance liquid chromatography with chemiluminescence detection is described. After extraction of urine with C18 silica cartridges, the bile acids were separated into non-conjugated, glycine, taurine and sulphate fractions by ion-exchange chromatography on a lipophilic gel. Solvolysis of the sulphate was carried out by treatment with trifluoroethanol in acetone containing hydrochloric acid, and the liberated amino acid conjugates were fractionated again. The individual bile acids were separated on a reversed-phase C18 column (Bile Pak II), with detection by an immobilized 3 alpha-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase enzyme reactor and chemiluminescence reaction of the generated NADH using 1-methoxy-5-methylphenazinium methylsulphate-isoluminol-microperoxidase system. The assay method showed the detection limits ranging from 8 to 250 pmol for the bile acids tested. Analysis of urine samples obtained from newborns, non-pregnant women and women in late pregnancy showed a large difference in bile acid composition and conjugation mode, suggesting that bile acid metabolism is different during fetal and neonatal periods.     

Determination of threo and erythro configurations of 3-fluorophenylalanine for verifying stereochemical aspects of recently reported syntheses

Determination of threo and erythro configurations of both diastereoisomers of 3-fluorophenylalanine on the basis of chemical transformation and X-ray analysis has confirmed that the aziridine ring opening reaction gives the threo isomer stereoselectively, whereas the fluorodehydroxylation reaction affords both isomers nonselectively.     

Synthesis of optically active (+)-19-nortestosterone by asymmetric bis-annulation reaction

Michael reaction of 1,7-pctadien-3-one with 2-methylcyclopentane-1,3-dione, followed by intramolecular aldol condensation promoted by L-amino acids produced the optically active (+)-4-(3-butenyl)-7a-methyl-5,6,7,7a-tetrahydroindane-1,5-dione in high chemical and optical yields. The PdCl₂-catalyzed oxidation of the terminal double bond gave the methyl ketone, which had 76% optical purity and was made 100% optically pure by recrystallization. Then aldol condensation afforded the tricyclic ketone, which was alkylated with 3-butenyl iodide to afford (?)-3β-t-butoxy-2,3,3a,4,5,7,8,9,9aβ,9bα-decahydro-6-(3-butenyl)-3aβ-methyl-1H-benz[e]inden-7-one. The synthesis of this compound means the total synthesis of (+)-19-nortestosterone.     

Preparation of substituted benzoyltrimethylsilanes by the palladium-catalyzed silylation of substituted benzoyl chlorides with hexamethyldisilane

A direct preparative route to benzoyltrimethylsilane has been found by the reaction of benzoyl chloride with hexamethyldisilane in the presence of a specified palladium(II) complex as catalyst.     

SO+(A2Π-X2Πr) emission produced from a dissociative charge-transfer reaction of He+ with SO2 at thermal energy

The extensive bands observed from the helium afterglow reaction of SO₂ in the 250–540 nm region are assigned to the new SO⁺(A²Π-X²Π_r) system produced from the He⁺/SO₂ dissociative charge-transfer reaction at thermal energy. They had been erroneously interpreted as the SO⁺₂ (C?-X?) system produced from He(2³S)/SO₂ Penning ionization. The spectroscopic constants for the SO⁺A²Π) and SO⁺(X²Π_r) states were determined.     

Design and modeling of microwave photonic devices

Different types of finite element methods (FEMs) for microwave and optical waveguides are reviewed and are utilized for modeling of a traveling-wave (TW) optical modulator, as one of the typical microwave photonic devices. Using the quasi-TEM and the full-wave vector FEM solvers for microwave waveguides and the scalar FEM solver for optical waveguides, the behaviour of a TW Z-cut Ti:LiNbO3 Mach–Zehnder optical modulator with a ridge structure is investigated.     

A fast directional algorithm for high-frequency electromagnetic scattering

This paper is concerned with the fast solution of high-frequency electromagnetic scattering problems using the boundary integral formulation. We extend the O(N log N) directional multilevel algorithm previously proposed for the acoustic scattering case to the vector electromagnetic case. We also detail how to incorporate the curl operator of the magnetic field integral equation into the algorithm. When combined with a standard iterative method, this results in an almost linear complexity solver for the combined field integral equations. In addition, the butterfly algorithm is utilized to compute the far field pattern and radar cross section with O(N log N) complexity.     

Supramolecular graphyne: a C(sp)-H...N hydrogen-bonded unique network structure of 2,4,6-triethynyl-1,3,5-triazine

The crystallization of 2,4,6-triethynyl-1,3,5-triazine (2) leads to a pi-stacked layered structure of a C(sp)-H...N hydrogen-bonded unique hexagonal network structure, which may be regarded as a supramolecular analogue of a hitherto unknown graphyne network: in-plane intermolecular interactions are short and linear H...N contacts (2.31 and 2.34 A) and the interlayer separation is 3.23 A.
