Complete NMR assignment of 3, 4‐seco‐lup‐20(29)‐en‐3‐oic acid from Decatropis bicolor

Complete ¹H and ¹³C NMR chemical shift assignments for 3,4‐seco‐lup‐20(29)‐en‐3‐oic acid ( 1 ) have been established by means of two‐dimensional COSY, HSQC, HMBC and NOESY spectroscopic experiments as well as by analysis of MS data. Compound 1 was isolated from Decatropis bicolor (Zucc.) Radlk. (Rutaceae) in addition to six coumarins and one alkaloid of known structure. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Direct amperometric determination of tert-butylhydroquinone in biodiesel

The direct amperometric determination of tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) in biodiesel at an unmodified glassy carbon electrode is reported. A biodiesel aliquot was added into an electrochemical cell containing a 75% (v/v) ethanol-water solution under stirring (with final concentration of 50 mmol L⁻¹ HClO₄). The amperometric method involved the continuous application of three sequential potential pulses to the working electrode (700 mV for 300 ms, 0 mV for 100 ms and −50 mV for 1 s). TBHQ was continuously monitored at the first (direct oxidation) and optionally at the second (reduction) potential pulse while the third potential pulse was applied for cleaning of the electrode surface. For comparison, the samples were also analyzed by high-performance liquid-chromatography and a good agreement between the results was verified. Recovery values for spiked samples were between 90% and 95% and the reproducibility of the proposed method was around 5% (n = 5). The proposed method can be easily adapted for on-site analysis.     

Influence of pH on the binding of diphenylmethylenepiperidines by 5-HT2B receptors in rat stomach fundus

Cyproheptadine is one of the compounds exhibiting the highest activity at 5-HT2B receptors. In a previous work we analysed the relevance of the amino group in diphenylmethylenepiperidines (DPMP), which are open cyproheptadine analogues. Only compounds containing N-H or N-methyl motifs, showed significant 5-HT2B activity. Surprisingly, the corresponding quaternary ammonium salt demonstrated a total lack of activity. Therefore, the question arises whether protonation favours the interaction of these compounds with 5-HT2B receptors. Consequently, we studied the protonation influence (by varying the pH of the medium) on the antagonism of serotonin by some cyproheptadine analogues in rat stomach fundus. The main results were: 1) N-protonation increases the activity of DPMPs. 2) Alkaline pH facilitates the occurrence of a non-surmountable antagonism. 3) The contrast between the activity of protonated DPMPs and the lack of activity of the corresponding quaternary ammonium cation, suggests either that the latter is prevented from acting by steric hindrance, or that the mechanism by which protonation may increase the activity depends not only on the charge of the proton, but also on its ability to form hydrogen bonds.     

Singular cycles of vector fields on regular parts of the boundary of Morse-Smale systems

At the boundary of the class of Morse-Smale vector fields there are vector fields whose unique degenerate phenomena is a singular cycle. We first characterize and classify all singular cycles which contains only one degeneracy (thesimple singular cycles: ssc). Each of these cycles defines a condimension one submanifold of vector fields. For some ssc its codimension one submanifold is a regular part of the boundary of the Morse-Smale systems. Risk Taking: Gender Differences and Educational Opportunity

This article focuses on two issues related to educational opportunity: (1) the relationship between risk-taking behavior and mathematics performance, and (2) whether there are gender differences in risk-taking behavior. From a review of literature it was concluded that students who are greater risk-takers perform better on mathematics tests and that males are greater risk-takers than females. It follows, therefore, that males perform better on mathematics tests in which risk-taking plays a role. It was further concluded that these differences effect the opportunities that girls are afforded in their desires to attend college, the availablitity of scholarships, and their self-confidence in mathematics.
