High-spin states of rotational bands built upon νi13/2 in 166Lu

High-Spin states of odd-odd ¹⁶⁶Lu were populated using the ¹³⁹La(³⁰Si,3nγ)¹⁶⁶Lu at a beam energy of 120 MeV. Twelve new γ-rays were placed on top of the previously known two rotational bands built upon πg _7/2⊗νi _13/2 and πh _11/2⊗νi _13/2. Extending high-spin states up to 21⁺ and 25⁻ for each band, we have observed the onset of band crossing near ħω _c ≈ 0.35 MeV. The band crossing frequency of the yrast πh _11/2⊗νi _13/2 band is consistent with the neutron BC band crossing observed in lighter odd-odd Lu isotopes.     

Itinerant electron ferromagnetism in the Laves phase compounds Se(Co1−xAlx)2 and Lu(Co1−yAly)2

Typical weak itinerant ferromagnetism has been found in Sc(Co_1−xAl_x)₂, which a magnetism and higher Curie temperatures. Magnetic for X = 0.10. Lu(Co_1−yAl_y)₂ also shows ferromagnetism with much larger moments anad higher Curie temperatures. Magnetic and nonmagnetic Co atoms coexist in 0.06 < y < 0.12.     

Metal-catalyzed reactions of diborons for synthesis of organoboron compounds

Metal-catalyzed borylation of alkenes, alkynes, arenes, and organic halides with B-B or H-B compounds has been developed for the synthesis of organoboron compounds from simple organic substrates. The platinum(0)-catalyzed addition of bis(pinacolato)diboron to alkenes and alkynes provided a method for the stereoselective synthesis of cis-bis(boryl)alkanes or cis-bis(boryl)alkenes. The addition of diboron to 1,3-dienes with platinum(0) complexes provided a new access to cis-1,4-bis(boryl)-2-butene derivatives, which are versatile reagents for diastereoselective allylboration of carbonyl compounds. The first one-step procedure for the syntheses of aryl-, vinyl-, and allylboronates was achieved via crosscoupling reactions of diborons with aryl and 1-alkenyl halides or triflates and allyl acetates. Direct C-H borylation of arenes catalyzed by a transition metal complex was studied as an economical protocol for the synthesis of a variety of arylboron derivatives. Ir-catalyzed C-H borylation of arenes, heteroarenes, and benzylic positions of alkylarenes by bis(pinacolato)diboron or pinacolborane furnished aryl-, heteroaryl-, and benzylboron compounds. This article discusses the mechanisms of these reactions and their synthetic applications.     

Acceleration effect of Lewis acid in allylboration of aldehydes: catalytic,regiospecific, diastereospecific,and enantioselective synthesis of homoallyl alcohols

The addition of pinacol allylboronic esters to aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes smoothly occurred at -78 degrees C in toluene in the presence of a catalytic amount of AlCl3 or Sc(OTf)3 (10 mol %) to give the corresponding homoallyl alcohols in high yields. The reactions proceeded regio- and diastereospecifically, yielding the isomerically pure syn- and anti-homoallyl alcohols from (Z)- and (E)-allylboronic esters, respectively. The protocol was also applied to enantioselective reactions by using a chiral Lewis acid catalyst.     

Estimation of excess solvation numbers of water and cosolvents from preferential interaction and volumetric experiments

To elucidate, at a molecular level, how cosolvents influence protein stability, it is indispensable to understand the distribution of water and cosolvent molecules around proteins. Calculation of excess solvation numbers of water and cosolvents serves this purpose, and I show that they can be extracted from preferential interaction parameter and volumeric data via the Kirkwood-Buff theory. This scheme was applied to trehalose and glycerol (stabilizers) and urea (denaturant). Important insights from the application include stabilizer-induced enhancement of protein hydration, which, together with the stabilizer's exclusion from protein surfaces, may contribute to protein stabilization at high osmolyte concentrations.     

Growth and energy band gap of CaSeS thin films prepared by hot-wall epitaxy

This paper investigates preparation of CaSeS thin films using hot-wall epitaxy. These films can be grown epitaxially on cleaved BaF₂(1 1 1) at a substrate temperature of 873 K by tailoring the VI/II flux ratio vaporized from Ca and SeS resources. The optical absorption edge of these films thus tailored can be observed clearly, shifting toward higher photon energy with increasing S content. In particular, the energy band gap of CaSe_0.66S_0.34, capable of lattice-matching to InP was found to be 4.69 eV, producing considerably large band gap difference of 3.34 eV between the CaSe_0.66S_0.34 and InP.     

Naucleamides A-E,new monoterpene indole alkaloids from Nauclea latifolia

Five new monoterpene indole alkaloids, naucleamides A-E (1-5), were isolated from the bark and wood of Nauclea latifolia, and the structures and relative stereochemistry were elucidated from the spectroscopic data. Naucleamide E (5) is a unique monoterpene indole alkaloid possessing a pentacyclic ring system with an amino acetal bridge.
