Hexaphenylbenzene as a rigid template for the straightforward syntheses of "star-shaped" glycodendrimers

Original glycodendrimers emanating from propargylated hexaphenylbenzene cores and containing up to 54 peripheral sugar ligands have been synthesized by Cu(I)-catalyzed [1,3]-dipolar cycloadditions using both convergent and divergent approaches.     

N-tert-Butoxycarbonyl (BOC) Deprotection Using Boron Trifluoride Etherate

A mild and efficient procedure is described for the removal of the tert-butoxycarbonyl (BOC) group using boron trifluoride etherate and molecular sieves in dichloromethane at room temperature. The scope of this procedure is explored for the deprotection of a variety of amines including amino acid derivatives.

The synthesis of 3-methyl-7-[2-(dimethylaminoethyl)oximino]-5-arylcyclopenta [f] benzoxa-zolinones, potential ligands of the 5HT_1D receptors is described through a 4 steps reaction strategy from 3-methyl-6-acetyl benzoxazolinone.     

Importance of REP values when comparing the CALUX bioassay results with chemoanalyses results Example with spiked vegetable oils

Differences between chemical activated luciferase gene expression (CALUX) bioassay and chemoanalyses results are observed.This paper shows that calculations of the TEQ values using REP values instead of WHO TEF values give different results. The REP values do affect the results obtained by the CALUX technique. These differences are more marked for the dioxin like PCB compounds (CALUX TEQ values are lower than WHO TEQ values) than for the dioxin compounds (CALUX TEQ values are higher than WHO TEQ values).The CALUX results were compared with the concentrations of the congeners’ spiked into the oil.     

Easily synthesized antimalarial ferrocene triazacyclononane quinoline conjugates

Starting from triazacyclononane, easily accessible ferrocenic quinoline derivatives were synthesized. Their antiplasmodial properties were investigated against chloroquine sensitive (HB3) and chloroquine-resistant (Dd2) Plasmodium falciparum. One of them, 7-chloro-4-[4-(7-chloro-4-quinolyl)-7-ferrocenylmethyl-1,4,7- triazacyclononan-1-yl]quinoline (4) showed potent antimalarial activity in vitro against the chloroquine-resistant strain Dd2 and therefore revealed to be the most promising lead from the present work for new organometallic antimalarial agents.     

Langmuir films of (alpha-amino) phosphorus amphiphiles on various ion-containing subphases

Monolayers of amphiphilic (alpha-amino)phosphonocarboxylic and (alpha-amino)phosphonic acids have been formed by adsorption at the air/water interface. The influence of both the ionic strength and the pH of the subphase on the stability and compactness of the monolayers have been studied. The stability and the compactness of the Langmuir films are enhanced by introduction of metallic ions such as Ca(2+) or Mg(2+) in the subphases. These effects are more pronounced with Ca(2+). These metal ions can form dimeric complexes with the phosphorus moieties of the surfactant polar heads and therefore bring the amphiphiles closer. For the less hydrophobic derivative, complexation with Ca(2+) or Mg(2+) is required to ensure the formation of a stable monomolecular film. For both phosphonocarboxylic and phosphonic compounds, models have been proposed to represent the complexation phenomenon at the air/water interface.     

Electronic peculiarities of the excited states of [RuN5C]+ vs. [RuN6]2+ polypyridine complexes: insight from theory

The ground state, oxidized ground state, (3)MLCT and (3)MC excited states have been studied by DFT and TDDFT for two Ru(II) complexes bearing an N(6) or N(5)C coordination sphere. The effect of replacing one Ru-N dative bond by one Ru-C covalent bond have been studied and quantified on their ground state by the means of geometry optimization, NBO analysis and calculation of their IR vibrations. IR fingerprints of the Ru-C bond have been found at 945 and 1113 cm(-1). In addition, this study confirmed and quantified the effects of N→C(-) substitution on the spectroscopic properties of the [RuN(5)C](+) complex: a broader and bathochromically-shifted absorption spectrum, a smaller ground-(3)MLCT energy gap and a highly energetic (3)MC state are the major characteristics of the carbon-containing monocationic complex.     

Preparation of a polyacrylonitrile/multi-walled carbon nanotubes composite by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization on a stainless steel wire for solid-phase microextraction

We report on the fabrication and performances of a solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber based on a stainless steel wire coated with a covalently attached polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) composite. This new coating is obtained by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of acrylonitrile mixed with MWCNTs. ATRP is initiated from 11-(2-bromo-2-methylpropionyloxy)-undecyl-phosphonic acid molecules grafted on the wire surface via the phosphonic acid group. The extraction performances of the fibers are assessed on different classes of compounds (polar, non-polar, aromatic, etc.) from water solutions by headspace extraction. The optimization of the parameters affecting the extraction efficiency of the target compounds was studied as well as the reproducibility and the repeatability of the fiber. The fibers sustain more than 200 extractions during which they remain chemically stable and maintain good performances (detection limits lower than 2 μg/l, repeatability, etc.). Considering their robustness together with their easy and inexpensive fabrication, these fibers could constitute promising alternatives to existing products.
