Large‐acceptance diamond planar refractive lenses manufactured by laser cutting

For the first time, single‐crystal diamond planar refractive lenses have been fabricated by laser micromachining in 300 µm‐thick diamond plates which were grown by chemical vapour deposition. Linear lenses with apertures up to 1 mm and parabola apex radii up to 500 µm were manufactured and tested at the ESRF ID06 beamline. The large acceptance of these lenses allows them to be used as beam‐conditioning elements. Owing to the unsurpassed thermal properties of single‐crystal diamond, these lenses should be suitable to withstand the extreme flux densities expected at the planned fourth‐generation X‐ray sources.     

Redox‐Induced Spin‐State Switching and Mixed Valency in Quinonoid‐Bridged Dicobalt Complexes

The complexes [{(tmpa)Co^II}₂(μ‐L¹)^2?]²⁺ ( 1²⁺ ) and [{(tmpa)Co^II}₂(μ‐L²)^2?]²⁺ ( 2²⁺ ), with tmpa=tris(2‐pyridylmethyl)amine, H₂L¹=2,5‐di‐[2‐(methoxy)‐anilino]‐1,4‐benzoquinone, and H₂L²=2,5‐di‐[2‐(trifluoromethyl)‐anilino]‐1,4‐benzoquinone, were synthesized and characterized. Structural analysis of 2²⁺ revealed a distorted octahedral coordination around the cobalt centers, and cobalt–ligand bond lengths that match with high‐spin Co^II centers. Superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometric studies on 1²⁺ and 2²⁺ are consistent with the presence of two weakly exchange‐coupled high‐spin cobalt(II) ions, for which the nature of the coupling appears to depend on the substituents on the bridging ligand, being antiferromagnetic for 1²⁺ and ferromagnetic for 2²⁺ . Both complexes exhibit several one‐electron redox steps, and these were investigated with cyclic voltammetry and UV/Vis/near‐IR spectroelectrochemistry. For 1²⁺ , it was possible to chemically isolate the pure forms of both the one‐electron oxidized mixed‐valent 1³⁺ and the two‐electron oxidized isovalent 1⁴⁺ forms, and characterize them structurally as well as magnetically. This series thus provided an opportunity to investigate the effect of reversible electron transfers on the total spin‐state of the molecule. In contrast to 2²⁺ , for 1⁴⁺ the metal–ligand distances and the distances within the quinonoid ligand point to the existence of two low‐spin Co^III centers, thus showing the innocence of the quintessential non‐innocent ligands L. Magnetic data corroborate these observations by showing the decrease of the magnetic moment by roughly half (neglecting spin exchange effects) on oxidizing the molecules with one electron, and the disappearance of a paramagnetic response upon two‐electron oxidation, which confirms the change in spin state associated with the electron‐transfer steps.     

Synthesis and Cytotoxic Activity of 1‐{3‐[1‐(5‐Organylsilylfuran‐2‐yl)silinan‐1‐yl]propyl}amines and Some Trimethylgermyl Analogues

New highly cytotoxic 1‐{3‐[1‐(5‐organylsilyl‐furan‐2‐yl)silinan‐1‐yl]propyl}amines and some trimethylgermyl analogues (IC₅₀ 1–7 μg mL^?1) have been synthesized by a hydrosilylation reaction of aliphatic and heterocyclic N‐allylamines in the presence of Speier’s catalyst. The effects of the silacycle, the element‐organic substituent in position 5 of the furan ring, and the structure of the amine on the cytotoxicity of the new compounds have been studied.     

Ferromagnetically Coupled S=1 Chains in Crystals of Verdazyl-Nitronyl Nitroxide Diradicals

Thermally stable organic diradicals with a triplet ground state along with large singlet-triplet energy gap have significant potential for advanced technological applications. A series of phenylene-bridged diradicals with oxoverdazyl and nitronyl nitroxide units were synthesized via a palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of iodoverdazyls with a nitronyl nitroxide-2-ide gold(I) complex with high yields. The diradicals exhibit high stability and do not decompose in an inert atmosphere up to 180 °C. For the diradicals, both substantial AF (ΔE_ST≈−64 cm⁻¹) and FM (ΔE_ST≥25 and 100 cm⁻¹) intramolecular exchange interactions were observed. The sign of the exchange interaction is determined both by the bridging moiety (para- or meta-phenylene) and by the type of oxoverdazyl block (C-linked or N-linked). Upon crystallization, diradicals with the triplet ground state form unique one-dimensional exchange-coupled chains with strong intra- and weak inter-diradical ferromagnetic coupling.     

Stereoselective Synthesis of Multisubstituted Cyclohexanes by Reaction of Conjugated Enynones with Malononitrile in the Presence of LDA

Reaction of linear conjugated enynones, 1,5-diarylpent-2-en-4-yn-1-ones, with malononitrile in the presence of lithium diisopropylamide LDA, as a base, in THF at room temperature for 3–7 h resulted in the formation of the product of dimerization, multisubstituted polyfunctional cyclohexanes, 4-aryl-2,6-bis(arylethynyl)-3-(aryloxomethyl)-4-hydroxycyclohexane-1,1-dicarbonitriles, in yields up to 60%. Varying the reaction conditions by decreasing time and temperature and changing the ratio of starting compounds (enynone and malononitrile) allowed isolating some intermediate compounds, which confirmed a plausible reaction mechanism. The relative stability of possible stereoisomers of such cyclohexanes was estimated by quantum chemical calculations (DFT method). The obtained cyclohexanes were found to possess photoluminescent properties.
