Generation of allylic manganates from trimethylmanganate and allylic stannanes and their reactions with epoxides

A new method for forming allyldimethylmanganate has been developed. The preparation eliminated the need for prior generation of an allylmetal species such as allyllithium or allylmagnesium compounds. The reagents reacted with epoxides to give allylated products exclusively in good yields.     

Reduction of 1,3,4,6-tetrakis(alkylthio)thieno-[3,4-c]thiophenes with sodium or sodium anthracenide leading to the cleavage of the alkyl-sulfur bond

The reaction of 1,3,4,6-tetrakis(alkylthio)thieno[3,4-c]thiophenes 1 with sodium or sodium anthracenide in hexamethylphosphoric triamide (HMPA) gave thieno[3,4-c]thiophene-1(3H)-thiones 2 by the cleavage of the alkyl-sulfur bond through the intermediary formation of their radical anions.     

New Disk Structure for Million Cycle Overwritable Phase Change Optical Disk

The overwrite cycle characteristics and environmental stability of a phase change optical disk with a new disk structure were demonstrated. The C/N ratio was around 55dB, the erase ratio was around 25dB and the phase jitter was under 50% throughout the one million cycle overwrite test. The accelerated aging test conditions were 90°C, 80%RH, for 600 hours and 70°C, 80%RH for 5,200 hours. The archival and shelf one million overwrite cycle characteristics of phase jitter were stable throughout the aging test. The life expectancy of the disk is anticipated to be more than 60 years in a 32°C, 80%RH environment.Presented at the International Commission for Optics Topical Meeting, Kyoto, 1994.     

Tritium level in Japanese diet and human tissue

Tritium concentrations are reported for diet and human tissue samples collected in the Akita district of northern Japan. Sixteen separate food group samples and a total diet sample were collected for Akita City during April and May 1987. Six samples of heart and nine samples of kidney tissue were collected from 10 decreased individuals in Akita Prefecture from January to July 1986. Five serum and four blood samples were also obtained in Akita Prefecture from December 1985 to June 1986. Free water³H concentration as well as tissue-bound³H were determined separately. Specific activity ratios of tissue-bound³H to free water³H in the samples were almost between 1.0 and 2.0 and were similar to our previous results for food samples and other tissue samples. The specific activity ratio was also found to be lower than that reported in the U.S.A. and significantly lower than in Europe.     

Relation between monocytes in peripheral blood and development of atherosclerosis in hypercholesterolemic rabbits.

The relation among circulating monocytes, serum cholesterol and LDL cholesterol in manifestation of atherosclerosis was investigated in hypercholesterolemic rabbits. Serum cholesterol increased sharply and reached a plateau at 12 weeks after the start of cholesterol diet feeding; LDL cholesterol gradually increased until 24 weeks, and the number of monocytes in blood started to decrease abruptly around 12 weeks and resulted in less than 1% total white blood cells at 24 weeks, as reflected by a severe progression of atheroma formation. This result indicated that the decrement of monocyte number in blood was predictive of the presence of severe atherosclerotic plaques.     

Endogenous and exogenous testosterone levels after administration of deuterium-labelled testosterone propionate in hypogonadotropic hypogonadism

A gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-selected ion monitoring technique was employed to determine simultaneously the plasma concentrations of endogenous and exogenous testosterone in three patients with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism after a single i.m. dose of testosterone propionate-19,19,19-d3. The plasma levels of testosterone-19,19,19-d3 derived from testosterone propionate-19,19,19-d3 were maintained above the normal testosterone levels (greater than 4 ng/ml) for 48 h, while the plasma levels of endogenous testosterone changed little.
