The fractionation of small particles in a liquid based on their size in a micropost array by deterministic lateral displacement was recently demonstrated with unprecedented resolution (L. R. Huang, E. C. Cox, R. H. Austin and J. C. Sturm, Science, 2004, 304, 987-990, ). In this paper, we present a model of how the critical particle size for fractionation depends on the micropost geometry, depending specifically on the gap between posts, the offset of posts in one row with respect to another, and whether the fluid is driven by hydrodynamics or by electroosmosis. In general the critical particle diameter is much smaller than the gap, which prevents clogging. The model is supported by data with particles from 2.3 to 22 microm.  相似文献

We report the implementation and evaluation of a ‘peer assisted learning’ (PAL) scheme designed to reduce the so-called ‘cooling off’ phenomenon in undergraduate mathematics. ‘Cooling off’ occurs when mathematics undergraduates lose motivation and interest in their studies, despite having previously actively chosen to study it at higher levels. We found that, despite concerns about the novel didactic contract inherent in PAL schemes, a majority of students chose to engage with the scheme, and that the student leaders of the PAL sessions were generally capable of implementing a student-centred pedagogy. Furthermore, we found that students who attended the PAL sessions had higher achievement in their final examinations, even after controlling for their lecture attendance and prior attainment. We conclude by arguing that PAL may provide a useful mechanism for reducing the prevalence of the ‘cooling off’ phenomenon in some – but not all – groups of mathematics students.  相似文献

A novel approach is taken regarding the theoretical basis for the electronic structure of amorphous semiconductors. For these materials we propose a model displaying intermediate range order with undulations in composition or structure on a scale within the range of validity of the graded band-gap concept. Electronic states well within the allowed bands are determined by a perturbative analysis starting with Bloch states; states near the band edges, by a modification of an effective mass analysis previously developed for monotonically graded mixed crystals. Modulated extended states are deduced from the first analysis; localized states, by the second. We identify the band edges as the loci of the classical turning points of the effective mass functions for the localized states. Thermal activation from the band edge troughs and tunneling between troughs are considered. From the model and analysis it appears possible to explain field-dependent conductivity, to account for the persistence of the optical band-gap on conversion from crystalline to amorphous semiconductors, and to predict sensitivity of electronic properties to doping in some amorphous semiconductors.  相似文献

The synthesis and magnetic properties of three new members of a family of salicyaldoxime based [Mn6] single-molecule magnets possessing new structural types, core topologies and Mn oxidation state distributions are reported. The isostructural complexes [MnIII6O2(R-sao)6(X)2(EtOH)6] (R = Et, X = Br (1); R = Me, X = I (2)) exhibit single-molecule magnet behaviour with spin Hamiltonian parameters S = 12, g = 1.98 and D = -0.36 cm(-1) in both cases. The hexametallic cluster [MnIII4MnIV2O2(OMe)(4-)(Et-sao)6(MeOH)2].MeOH (3.MeOH) possesses a planar rod-like topology and a mixed valent [MnIV4MnIII2] core, which is unprecedented in this family of [Mn6] SMMs.  相似文献

The use of the reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer—hetero Diels–Alder (RAFT‐HDA) click reaction for the modular construction of block copolymers is extended to the generation of high molecular weight materials. Cyclopentadienyl end‐functionalized polystyrene (PS‐Cp) prepared via both atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and the RAFT process are conjugated to poly(isobornyl acrylate) (PiBoA) (also prepared via RAFT polymerization) to achieve well‐defined block copolymers with molecular weights ranging from 34 000 to over 100 000 g · mol−1 and with small polydispersities (PDI < 1.2). The conjugation reactions proceeded in a very rapid fashion (less than 10 min in the majority of cases) under ambient conditions of temperature and atmosphere. The present study demonstrates—for the first time—that RAFT‐HDA click chemistry can provide access to high molecular weight block copolymers in a simple and straight‐forward fashion.

The goal of this study was to determine the sensitivity of virulent Burkholderia pseudomallei to natural sunlight. We describe solar dosimetry calibrated to integrate radiation between 295 and 305 nm and an exposure system that minimizes thermal effects on bacterial cells. Burkholderia pseudomallei cells were either exposed to sunlight in UV transparent dishes or maintained in the dark covered by opaque foil. The cells maintained in the dark remained at constant levels for the duration of all experiments. The exposed cells nearby were killed with a kinetic studied through 5 Log10 inactivation. We found that cells in stationary phase of growth were nearly two-fold more resistant to sunlight than cells in lag or exponential growth. A virulent strain of B. pseudomallei that produced mucoid colonies showed sensitivity to sunlight similar to both a virulent strain that produced nonmucoid colonies and a strain of B. thailandensis . The inactivation of B. pseudomallei by sunlight in different types of water of environmental relevance or inside amoebae was investigated. The sensitivity of virulent B. pseudomallei was calculated and its comparison with previous studies employing monochromatic germicidal light (254 nm) is discussed . This may be the first report in the open literature of the inactivation of a virulent biological threat agent by natural sunlight. These data should assist in estimating the risk for contracting melioidosis and in predicting the time period during which B. pseudomallei remains infectious after an accidental or intentional release in the environment.  相似文献
