One‐Pot Synthetic Procedure for2,2′‐Disubstituted Biaryls via the Suzuki Coupling Reaction of Aryl Triflates in a Biphasic Solvent System

A one‐pot synthetic procedure for 2,2′‐disubstituted biaryls was developed via a Suzuki cross‐coupling reaction of aryl triflates in a biphasic solvent system. The effects of various bases and solvents were investigated. Results showed that the Na₂CO₃–toluene/H₂O combination gave the highest yields.     

Quantum Mutual Entropy Defined by Liftings

On Short Time Asymptotic Behavior of Some Symmetric Diffusions on General State Spaces

For conservative symmetric diffusions on a general state space (X,m), the short time asymptotic behavior of tlog _X 1 _A T _t 1 _B dm is investigated, where T _t is the associated semigroup and A and B are measurable subsets of X. It is proved that the superior limit is dominated by the inferior limit up to some absolute constant. When ₂ of the associated Dirichlet form is lower bounded, it is shown that the limit exists for any A and B, and is described by the intrinsic metric between them. Applications to infinite-dimensional spaces and fractals are given.     

Pentagon stability: cyclic delocalization of lone pairs through sigma conjugation and design of polycyclophosphanes

The orbital-phase theory was applied to propose pentagon stability in a well-defined manner. Cyclic delocalization of the lone pair electrons on the five-membered ring atoms through the vicinal sigma bonds was shown to be favored by the orbital-phase properties. The pentagon stability was found to be outstanding in saturated phosphorus five-membered rings in the puckered conformation, and was substantiated by the negative strain energy of cyclopentaphosphane, P(5)H(5) (3). The relative increments of the remarkable increase in the strain energies of protonation on the different atoms in the most stable conformers supported the significance of the cyclic delocalization of the lone pairs. Pentagon stability led to the design of three novel polycyclic phosphanes, P(12)H(4) (18), P(13)H(3) (19), and P(14)H(2) (20), with low strain energies due to many puckered pentagon units in them. The low stability of the dodecahedron P(20) (22) was suggested by the high strain energy due to its planar pentagon units. The pentagon stability is less significant in the saturated nitrogen ring molecules due to the greater energy gap between the n and sigma orbitals.     

5-[4-(1-Hydroxyethyl)phenyl]-10,15,20-triphenylporphyrin as a probe of the transition-state conformation in hydrolase-catalyzed enantioselective transesterifications

5-[4-(1-Hydroxyethyl)phenyl]-10,15,20-triphenylporphyrin (1a) and zinc porphyrin 1b were designed and synthesized to experimentally examine the validity of the transition-state model previously proposed for the lipase-catalyzed kinetic resolution of secondary alcohols. The lipases from Pseudomonas cepacia (lipase PS), Candida antarctica (CHIRAZYME L-2), Rhizomucor miehei (CHIRAZYME L-9), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (lipase LIP) exhibited excellent enantioselectivity (E >100 at 30 degrees C). Subtilisin Carlsberg from Bacillus licheniformis (ChiroCLEC-BL) also showed high enantioselectivity for 1a (E = 140 at 30 degrees C), and the thermodynamic parameters were determined: DeltaDeltaH = -6.8 +/- 0.8 kcal mol(-1), DeltaDeltaS = -13 +/- 3 cal mol(-1) K(-1). Lipases and subtilisin showed R- and S-preference for 1, respectively. The mechanisms underlying the experimental observations are explained in terms of the transition-state models. The large secondary alcohol 1 is a powerful tool for investigating the conformation of the transition state of the enzyme-catalyzed reactions. The fact that 1 was resolved with high enantioselectivity strongly suggests that the gauche conformation, but not the anti conformation, is taken in the transition state, in agreement with the transition-state models involving the stereoelectronic effect.
