Asymmetric synthesis of bicyclo[n.1.0]alkanes by the enantioselective 1,3-CH insertion reaction of chiral magnesium carbenoids

Treatment of enantiomerically pure 1-chlorovinyl p-tolyl sulfoxides, derived from cyclic ketones and (R)-chloromethyl p-tolyl sulfoxide, with the lithium enolate of tert-butyl carboxylates gave adducts in quantitative yields as single diastereomers. The adducts were treated with i-PrMgCl in toluene to afford optically active bicyclo[n.1.0]alkanes bearing a tert-butyl carboxylate moiety in up to 99% enantiomeric excess through the enantioselective 1,3-CH insertion reaction of the generated chiral magnesium carbenoids. This is the first example of the enantioselective 1,3-CH insertion reaction of magnesium carbenoid.     

Palladium-catalyzed multiple arylation of thiophenes

Secondary 2-thiophenecarboxamides efficiently undergo unique triarylation accompanied by formal decarbamoylation under palladium catalysis. 3-Substituted thiophenes, especially having an electron-withdrawing group, can also be triarylated.     

Aryl radical cyclizations: one-Pot syntheses of protoberberine and pavine alkaloids

Treatment of 2-(2'-bromo-beta-phenethyl)isocarbostyrils 7 with AIBN-Bu(3)SnH in boiling benzene gave 8-oxoberbines 3 in good yields. A similar treatment of 2-(2'-bromo-beta-phenethyl)isoquinolinium bromides 6 and their nor- and homoanalogues (10,11) induced 6-, 5-, and 7-exo radical closures in a one-pot manner to give protoberberines 2, dibenzo[b,g]indolizidine 14a and, dibenzo[a, h]-1-azabicyclo[5.4.0]undecane 15a, respectively. A one-pot radical cyclization of 1-(2'-bromobenzyl)isoquinoline methiodide 18a gave a pavine alkaloid, (+/-)-algemonine (19a).     

Spectrophotometric and analogue derivative spectrophotometric determination of ultramicro amounts of cadmium with cationic porphyrins

alpha,beta,gamma,delta-Tetrakis(1-methylpyridinium-3-yl)porphine [T(3-MPy)P] and alpha,beta,gamma,delta-tetrakis(1-methylpyridinium-4-yl)porphine [T(4-MPy)P] have been found to react rapidly with cadmium to give coloured complexes in weakly alkaline media at room temperature. Simple and practical methods for the determination of cadmium at ng/ml levels by conventional and analogue derivative spectrophotometry have been proposed. The analogue method gives higher sensitivity. T(3-MPy)P gives higher sensitivity than T(4-MPy)P. The interference of various foreign cations and anions has also been examined and in many cases eliminated or reduced. Adsorption of the porphyrins and their cadmium complexes onto the glassware, which is usually observed under the conditions of reaction and causes significant errors in the determination, can be suppressed almost completely by addition of fairly large amounts of a salt such as sodium chloride.     

Asymmetric total synthesis of (-)-spirofungin A and (+)-spirofungin B

[chemical reaction: see text]. The stereocontrolled total synthesis of (-)-spirofungin A (1) and (+)-spirofungin B (2a), polyketide-type antibiotics having various antifungal activities, has been achieved employing the Weinreb amide 8, the alkyne 9, and the vinyl boronate 5 readily available from the common intermediate 10. The first synthesis proceeded with a longest linear sequence of 31 steps, affording (-)-1 and (+)-2a in 7.9% and 5.2% overall yields, respectively.     

Ultrafast manipulation of antiferromagnetism of NiO

Photoexcitation of antiferromagnetic NiO leads to ultrafast reorientation of Ni2+ spins due to change of the magnetic anisotropy. Recovery of the magnetic ground state occurs as coherent oscillation of the antiferromagnetic order parameter between hard- and easy-axis states manifesting itself as quantum beating. The coherence time is approximately 1 ns with the beating frequency being determined by the anisotropy energy.     

Compact Almost Kähler Manifolds with Divergence-Free Weyl Conformal Tensor

We prove that a compact almost Kähler manifold satisfying that a certain part of thedivergence W of the Weyl conformal tensor W vanishes isKähler.     

Resonance-enhanced two-photon sum-frequency generation in NiO and KNiF<Subscript>3</Subscript>

Resonance-enhanced sum-frequency generation is introduced as a novel tool for investigation of magnetically ordered compounds. A tunable laser at frequency ₁ is used to excite an intermediate electronic transition resonantly while a second laser at frequency ₂ is used to scan the nonlinear spectrum at ₁+₂. The technique is particularly useful for investigation of centrosymmetric compounds since resonance enhancement at ₁ leads to large nonlinear signals even in the case of weakly allowed nonlinear processes. The technique is demonstrated on antiferromagnetic NiO and KNiF₃ and also shown to be useful for investigation of samples with large thickness or absorption.
