Palladium-catalyzed preparation of α-allyl esters and α,β-unsaturated esters from saturated esters via their silyl acetals

Reaction of ketene silyl acetals with allylic carbonates in the presence of palladium-phosphine catalyst in dioxane gives α-allyl esters in high yields. When the reaction is carried out with phosphine-free palladium catalyst in nitriles, α,β-unsaturated esters are obtained in good yields.     

ESR study of Mn2+ in GeTe and GeTeSi glasses

The electron spin resonance spectra of Mn²⁺ ions have been studied in Ge_xTe_100?x with x = 15, 17.5 and 20, and Ge_20?xTe₈₀Si_x with 0 ?x? 20. All samples are found to exhibit six hyperfine lines centered at g = 4.3 with hyperfine interaction constant A = 56 × 10^?4cm^?1. The g = 4.3 line is interpreted as being caused by Mn²⁺ ions incorporated in the amorphous network and surrounded by four Te atoms in an arrangement of orthorhombic symmetry. Some of the samples of GeTe show a g = 2.0 line. This line also appears after heat treatment in air at temperatures above the glass transition temperature. It is concluded that the g = 2.0 line is caused by Mn²⁺ ions in phase separated microcrystalline or concentrated regions of MnO in the glass.     

Optical switching and alignment of antiferroelectric liquid crystals containing an azo group

The optical properties of two kinds of photochromic antiferroelectric liquid crystal (AFLC) containing an azo group have been examined. Depending on the substituting group at the chiral centre, these AFLCs showed different photoinduced phase transitions by Ar⁺ laser light irradiation. This phase transition has led to a new form of optical switching controlled by a bias voltage. In addition, it was found that these AFLCs caused an azimuthal photoalignment effect regulated by linearly polarized Ar⁺ laser light irradiation. These phenomena were applied to image storage.     

Water inclusion as a trigger for modulation of anthracene arrangement and fluorescence emission of organic salt

An organic salt composed 9,10-bis(4-aminophenyl)anthracene and hypophosphorous acid emits yellow-green fluorescence in the crystalline state. The salt also gives water inclusion crystal which provides blue-green fluorescence. Single X-ray crystal studies revealed that water molecules induced the fluorescence change resulting from reaggregation of molecular packing.     

Formal [4+2] cycloaddition of 3-phenylcyclobutanones with nitriles

Various 3-phenylcyclobutanones reacted with aliphatic and aromatic nitriles in the presence of Me₃SiOTf to afford dihydropyridones by formal [4+2] cycloaddition.
