At-sea measurements of sound penetration into sediments using a buried vertical synthetic array

Acoustic bottom penetration experiments were carried out in a medium-grain sandy bottom at a site in St. Andrews Bay, Florida. These investigations used a new buried, vertical, one-dimensional synthetic array system where a small hydrophone was water-jetted into the sediment to a depth of approximately 2 m. Once buried, this hydrophone was mounted to a vertical robotics stage that translated the hydrophone upward in 1-cm increments. A broadband (3 to 80 kHz) spherical source, positioned 50 cm above the sediment-water interface, was used to insonify the sediment. Measurements were made with insonification angles above and below the critical angle by changing the horizontal distance of the source relative to the insertion point. This new measurement system is detailed, and results are presented that include temporal, frequency, and wavenumber analysis for natural and roughened interfaces. The measured compressional sound speed and attenuation are shown to be self-consistent using the Kramers-Kronig relation. Furthermore, only a single fast compressional wave was observed. There was no observation of a second slower compressional wave as predicted by some applications of the Biot model to unconsolidated water-saturated porous media.     

Exchange interaction effects on the optical properties of LuMnO3

We have measured the optical conductivity of single crystal LuMnO3 from 10 to 45000 cm(-1) at temperatures between 4 and 300 K. A symmetry allowed on-site Mn d-d transition near 1.7 eV is observed to blueshift ( approximately 0.1 eV) in the antiferromagnetic state due to Mn-Mn superexchange interactions. Similar anomalies are observed in the temperature dependence of the TO phonon frequencies which arise from spin-phonon interaction. We find that the known anomaly in the temperature dependence of the quasistatic dielectric constant epsilon(0) below T(N) approximately 90 K is overwhelmingly dominated by the phonon contributions.

The preparation of hexasilsesquioxane (T6) cages by "non aqueous" hydrolysis of trichlorosilanes

Hexasilsesquioxane cages (T6) have been prepared from a range of alkyl and aryl trichlorosilanes using a "non aqueous" hydrolysis with dimethyl sulfoxide.     

An equivariant Brauer semigroup and the symmetric imprimitivity theorem

Suppose that is a second countable locally compact transformation group. We let denote the set of Morita equivalence classes of separable dynamical systems where is a -algebra and is compatible with the given -action on . We prove that is a commutative semigroup with identity with respect to the binary operation for an appropriately defined balanced tensor product on -algebras. Synthesis of two dihydropyrroloindoledione‐based copolymers for organic electronics

Two novel dihydropyrroloindoledione (DPID)‐based copolymers have been synthesized in a two directional approach and characterized (gel permeation chromatography (GPC), ultraviolet‐visible (UV–vis), cyclic voltammetry, and computational models). These planar, broad absorption copolymers show promise for use in organic electronics, with deep energy levels and low bandgaps. The two‐directional Knoevenagel condensation used demonstrates the versatility of DPID as a useful yet underexploited conjugated unit. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The phase behavior of a polymer‐fullerene bulk heterojunction system that contains bimolecular crystals

Polymer:fullerene blends have been widely studied as an inexpensive alternative to traditional silicon solar cells. Some polymer:fullerene blends, such as blends of poly(2,5‐bis(3‐tetradecylthiophen‐2‐yl)thieno[3,2‐b]thiophene (pBTTT) with phenyl‐c71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC₇₁BM), form bimolecular crystals due to fullerene intercalation between the polymer side chains. Here we present the determination of the eutectic pBTTT:PC₇₁BM phase diagram using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and two‐dimensional grazing incidence X‐ray scattering (2D GIXS) with in‐situ thermal annealing. The phase diagram explains why the most efficient pBTTT:PC₇₁BM solar cells have 75–80 wt % PC₇₁BM since these blends lie in the center of the only room‐temperature phase region containing both electron‐conducting (PC₇₁BM) and hole‐conducting (bimolecular crystal) phases. We show that intercalation can be suppressed in 50:50 pBTTT:PC₇₁BM blends by using rapid thermal annealing to heat the blends above the eutectic temperature, which forces PC₇₁BM out of the bimolecular crystal, followed by quick cooling to kinetically trap the pure PC₇₁BM phase. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Measure theory and weak König's lemma

We develop measure theory in the context of subsystems of second order arithmetic with restricted induction. We introduce a combinatorial principleWWKL (weak-weak König's lemma) and prove that it is strictly weaker thanWKL (weak König's lemma). We show thatWWKL is equivalent to a formal version of the statement that Lebesgue measure is countably additive on open sets. We also show thatWWKL is equivalent to a formal version of the statement that any Borel measure on a compact metric space is countably additive on open sets.The research of both authors was partially supported by NSF Grant DMS-8701481.
