We demonstrate time-resolved counting of single atoms extracted from a weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate of 87Rb atoms. The atoms are detected with a high-finesse optical cavity and single atom transits are identified. An atom laser beam is formed by continuously output coupling atoms from the Bose-Einstein condensate. We investigate the full counting statistics of this beam and measure its second order correlation function g((2))(tau) in a Hanbury Brown-Twiss type experiment. For the monoenergetic atom laser we observe a constant correlation function g((2))(tau)=1.00 +/- 0.01 and an atom number distribution close to a Poissonian statistics. A pseudothermal atomic beam shows a bunching behavior and a Bose distributed counting statistics.  相似文献

We study the size of polyelectrolyte multilayer capsules as a function of ionic strength, temperature, and time. A dynamic micromechanical model is developed which successfully describes the experiments. The model includes the polymer-solvent surface tension, an electrostatic force which is strongly ionic strength dependent, and a temperature-dependent mobility parameter. The activation of >50 kT suggests that multiple ion pairs must be broken simultaneously in the process of chain rearrangement. In support of our physical model capsules can repeatedly swell and shrink by varying ionic strength.  相似文献

We study the momentum distribution and relaxation dynamics of semiconductor microcavity polaritons by angle-resolved and time-resolved spectroscopy. Above a critical pump level, the thermalization time of polaritons at positive detunings becomes shorter than their lifetime, and the polaritons form a quantum degenerate Bose-Einstein distribution in thermal equilibrium with the lattice.  相似文献

Buckling of an elastic linkage under general loading is investigated. We show that buckling is related to an initial value problem, which is always a conservative, area-preserving mapping, even if the original static problem is nonconservative. In some special cases, we construct the global bifurcation diagrams, and argue that their complicated structure is a consequence of spatial chaos. We characterize spatial chaos by the associated initial value problem's topological entropy, which turns out to be related to the number of buckled configurations.  相似文献

The geometric and electronic structure of bimetallic oxide clusters is studied as a function of their composition with gas phase vibrational spectroscopy. Infrared multiple photon dissociation spectra of titanium-vanadium oxide cluster anions are measured in the 500 to 1200 wave number range and assigned on the basis of harmonic frequencies calculated using density functional theory. Singly substituted (V(2)O(5))(n-1)(VTiO(5))(-) (n=2-4) cluster anions are shown to form polyhedral caged structures similar to those predicted for their isoelectronic counterparts, the neutral (V(2)O(5))(n) clusters. Upon systematic exchange of V by Ti atoms in V(4-n)Ti(n)O(-)(10) (n=1-4), the structure does not change. The stress induced by the isomorphous substitution results in an increased number of unpaired electrons (n-1) for the Ti-rich systems, leading to a quartet ground state for Ti(4)O(-)(10).  相似文献

Deuteron-gold (d+Au) collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider provide ideal platforms for testing QCD theories in dense nuclear matter at high energy. In particular, models suggesting strong saturation effects for partons carrying small nucleon momentum fraction (x) predict modifications to jet production at forward rapidity (deuteron-going direction) in d+Au collisions. We report on two-particle azimuthal angle correlations between charged hadrons at forward/backward (deuteron/gold going direction) rapidity and charged hadrons at midrapidity in d+Au and p+p collisions at square root of sNN=200 GeV. Jet structures observed in the correlations are quantified in terms of the conditional yield and angular width of away-side partners. The kinematic region studied here samples partons in the gold nucleus with x~0.1 to ~0.01. Within this range, we find no x dependence of the jet structure in d+Au collisions.  相似文献

We evaluate the current distribution for a single-electron transistor with intermediate strength tunnel conductance. Using the Schwinger-Keldysh approach and the drone (Majorana) fermion representation, we account for the renormalization of system parameters. Nonequilibrium effects induce a lifetime broadening of the charge-state levels, which suppress large current fluctuations.  相似文献

All metazoan animals comprise a body plan of different complexity. Since--especially based on molecular and cell biological data--it is well established that all metazoan phyla, including the Porifera (sponges), evolved from a common ancestor the search for common, basic principles of pattern formation (body plan) in all phyla began. Common to all metazoan body plans is the formation of at least one axis that runs from the apical to the basal region; examples for this type of organization are the Porifera and the Cnidaria (diploblastic animals). It seems conceivable that the basis for the formation of the Bauplan in sponges is the construction of their skeleton by spicules. In Demospongiae (we use the model species Suberites domuncula) and Hexactinellida, the spicules consist of silica. The formation of the spicules as the building blocks of the skeleton, starts with the expression of an enzyme which was termed silicatein. Spicule growth begins intracellularly around an axial filament composed of silicatein. When the first layer of silica is made, the spicules are extruded from the cells and completed extracellularly to reach their the final form and size. While the first steps of spicule formation within the cells are becoming increasingly clear, it remains to be studied how the extracellularly present silicatein strings are formed. The understanding of especially this morphogenetic process will allow an insight into the construction of the amazingly diverse skeleton of the siliceous sponges; animals which evolved between two periods of glaciations, the Sturtian glaciation (710-680 MYA) and the Varanger-Marinoan ice ages (605-585 MYA). Sponges are--as living fossils--witnesses of evolutionary trends which remained unique in the metazoan kingdom.  相似文献

Localization of cognitive processes is a strength of functional neuroimaging. However, information about functional interactions between brain areas is crucial for a deeper understanding of brain function. We applied vector autoregressive modeling in the context of Granger causality as a method to analyze directed connectivity in a standard event-related fMRI study using a simple auditory-motor paradigm. The basic idea is to use temporal information in stochastic time series of a brain region in order to predict signal time courses in other brain regions. Thus, we predicted that the method should demonstrate causal influence of the auditory cortex and the supplementary motor area (SMA) on primary motor cortex. Eleven right-handed healthy female subjects were instructed to press a ball with either their left or their right hand when hearing the command "left" or "right" in the scanner. Influence to the left motor cortex was found from bilateral auditory cortex as well as from the SMA in 9 of 11 subjects. Granger causality to the right motor cortex existed from bilateral auditory cortex in 5 and from SMA in 6 subjects. Granger causality to the SMA existed from right auditory cortex in 7 subjects and from left auditory cortex in 8 subjects. Our findings in a simple task show that even under suboptimal circumstances (a relatively long TR of 2440 ms), Granger causality can be a useful tool to explore effective connectivity. Temporally optimized scanning should increase that potential.  相似文献
