Recycling of PVC floor coverings; first results after one year of practice

Since the end of 1990, the “Arbeitsqemeinschaft PVC Bodenbelags Recycling (Society for the recycling of PVC floorings, AgPR)” collects and recycles PVC floor coverings in Germany. AgPR is an activity as well of PVC producers as of PVC floor covering manufacturers. 19 European companies participate in this venture. AgPR collects used floorings in several areas of Germany. It also pays 150 DM/t of PVC flooring delivered to its recycling plant in Großefehn. This plant has a capacity for recycling 5000 t/a. The used floor coverings are comminuted, ground to powder size and after that reused to manufacture new floor coverings.     

Fast electrophoretic separation of sulfur- and selenium-containig amino acid enantiomers with vancomycin as a chiral selector in coated capillaries

Baseline separation of the enantiomers of the negatively charged 6-aminoquinolyl-N-hydroxysuccinimidyl carbamate (AQC) derivatives of cystine, methionine, ethionine, and their seleno analogs can be achieved in 3–5 min with capillary electrophoresis in polyacrylamide coated capillaries and submillimolar concentrations of vancomycin as the chiral selector. In addition to the vancomycin concentration, the separation is affected by the type, concentration and pH of the buffer. Good buffers are more suitable than phosphate buffer. At pH values above the isoelectric point of vancomycin the mobility difference between the enantiomers becomes smaller. This effect is larger than would be expected from the reversal of the vancomycin migration alone.     

Applying Text Analytics for Studying Research Trends in Dependability

The dependability of systems and networks has been the target of research for many years now. In the 1970s, what is now known as the top conference on dependability—The IEEE/IFIP International Conference on Dependable Systems and Networks (DSN)—emerged gathering international researchers and sparking the interest of the scientific community. Although it started in niche systems, nowadays dependability is viewed as highly important in most computer systems. The goal of this work is to analyze the research published in the proceedings of well-established dependability conferences (i.e., DSN, International Symposium on Software Reliability Engineering (ISSRE), International Symposium on Reliable Distributed Systems (SRDS), European Dependable Computing Conference (EDCC), Latin-American Symposium on Dependable Computing (LADC), Pacific Rim International Symposium on Dependable Computing (PRDC)), while using Natural Language Processing (NLP) and namely the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) algorithm to identify active, collapsing, ephemeral, and new lines of research in the dependability field. Results show a strong emphasis on terms, like ‘security’, despite the general focus of the conferences in dependability and new trends that are related with ’machine learning’ and ‘blockchain’. We used the PRDC conference as a use case, which showed similarity with the overall set of conferences, although we also found specific terms, like ‘cyber-physical’, being popular at PRDC and not in the overall dataset.     

Solvent-Free Synthesis of Core-Functionalised Naphthalene Diimides by Using a Vibratory Ball Mill: Suzuki,Sonogashira and Buchwald–Hartwig Reactions

Solvent-free synthesis by using a vibratory ball mill (VBM) offers the chance to access new chemical reactivity, whilst reducing solvent waste and minimising reaction times. Herein, we report the core functionalisation of N,N’-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-2,6-dibromo-1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic acid (Br₂-NDI) by using Suzuki, Sonogashira and Buchwald–Hartwig coupling reactions. The products of these reactions are important building blocks in many areas of organic electronics including organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and organic photovoltaic cells (OPVCs). The reactions proceed in as little as 1 h, use commercially available palladium sources (frequently Pd(OAc)₂) and are tolerant to air and atmospheric moisture. Furthermore, the real-world potential of this green VBM protocol is demonstrated by the double Suzuki coupling of a monobromo(NDI) residue to a bis(thiophene) pinacol ester. The resulting dimeric NDI species has been demonstrated to behave as an electron acceptor in functioning OPVCs.     

Analysis of cocaine and its principal metabolites in waste and surface water using solid-phase extraction and liquid chromatography–ion trap tandem mass spectrometry

A validated method based on solid-phase extraction (SPE) and liquid chromatography-ion trap tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) is described for the determination of cocaine (COC) and its principal metabolites, benzoylecgonine (BE) and ecgonine methyl ester (EME), in waste and surface water. Several SPE adsorbents were investigated and the highest recoveries (95.7 +/- 5.5, 91.8 +/- 2.2 and 72.5 +/- 5.3% for COC, BE and EME, respectively) were obtained for OASIS HLB(R) cartridges (6 mL/500 mg) using 100 mL of waste water or 500 mL of surface water. Extracts were analysed by reversed-phase (RP) or hydrophilic interaction (HILIC) LC-MS/MS in positive ion mode with multiple reactions monitoring (MRM); the latter is the first reported application of the HILIC technique for drugs of abuse in water samples. Corresponding deuterated internal standards were used for quantification. The method limits of quantification (LOQs) for COC and BE were 4 and 2 ng L(-1), respectively, when RPLC was used and 1, 0.5 and 20 ng L(-1) for COC, BE and EME, respectively, with the HILIC setup. For COC and BE, the LOQs were below the concentrations measured in real water samples. Stability tests were conducted to establish the optimal conditions for sample storage (pH, temperature and time). The degradation of COC was minimal at -20 degrees C and pH = 2, but it was substantial at +20 degrees C and pH = 6. The validated method was applied to a set of waste and surface water samples collected in Belgium.     

Insights into the N-terminal Cu(II) and Cu(I) binding sites of the human copper transporter CTR1

Abstract

Copper transporter 1 (CTR1) is the main copper transporter in the eukaryotic system. CTR1 has several important roles: It binds Cu(II) ions that are present in the blood; it reduces those Cu(II) ions to Cu(I); and it subsequently transfers Cu(I) to the cytoplasmic domain, where the ion is delivered to various cellular pathways. Here, we seek to identify CTR1 binding sites for Cu(II) and Cu(I) and to shed light on the Cu(II)-to-Cu(I) reduction process. We focus on the first 14 amino acids of CTR1. This N-terminal segment is rich with histidine and methionine residues, which are known to bind Cu(II) and Cu(I), respectively; thus, this region has been suggested to have an important function in recruiting Cu(II) and reducing it to Cu(I). We utilize electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy together with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and UV-VIS spectroscopy and alanine substitution to reveal Cu(II) and Cu(I) binding sites in the focal 14-amino-acid segment. We show that H5 and H6 directly coordinate to Cu(II), whereas M7, M9, and M12 are involved in Cu(I) binding. This research is another step on the way to a complete understanding of the cellular copper regulation mechanism in humans.     

First report of the nutritional profile and antioxidant potential of Holothuria arguinensis,a new resource for aquaculture in Europe

This work reports for the first time the nutritional profile and antioxidant potential of the edible sea cucumber Holothuria arguinensis from the North-eastern Atlantic. H. arguinensis has high levels of protein, with the amino acids profile dominated by alanine, glycine and proline and low lysine/arginine ratios. Its carbohydrate and energetic contents are also low as well as the total lipid levels, although its lipid profile is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), especially arachidonic, eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids. In addition, H. arguinensis has high levels of calcium. The water and ethanol extracts show ability to scavenge free radicals and to chelate copper and iron ions. Our results indicate that H. arguinensis has a balanced nutritional quality suitable for human consumption. In addition, it contains compounds with antioxidant potential; thus its intake can contribute for a healthy and well-balanced diet.     

Connection probabilities and RSW‐type bounds for the two‐dimensional FK Ising model

We prove Russo‐Seymour‐Welsh‐type uniform bounds on crossing probabilities for the FK Ising (FK percolation with cluster weight q = 2) model at criticality, independent of the boundary conditions. Our proof relies mainly on Smirnov's fermionic observable for the FK Ising model [24], which allows us to get precise estimates on boundary connection probabilities. We stay in a discrete setting; in particular, we do not make use of any continuum limit, and our result can be used to derive directly several noteworthy properties—including some new ones—among which are the fact that there is no infinite cluster at criticality, tightness properties for the interfaces, and the existence of several critical exponents, in particular the half‐plane, one‐arm exponent. Such crossing bounds are also instrumental for important applications such as constructing the scaling limit of the Ising spin field [6] and deriving polynomial bounds for the mixing time of the Glauber dynamics at criticality [17]. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.     

Application of solid-phase microextraction combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to the determination of butylated hydroxytoluene in bottled drinking water

Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) is an antioxidant utilized as additive in foods and packaging plastic. Its presence in drinking water is possible if it is used as an antioxidant in the packaging plastic because it may migrate into the package's contents. A method for the determination of BHT in water by means of solid-phase microextraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry has been developed and evaluated with respect to the time of fiber exposure, limits of detection and quantitation, linearity and precision. Finally, the method was applied to evaluate the presence of this substance in samples of mineral and mineralized bottled drinking water, and it appeared to be present in seven out of a total of fifteen commercial brands.
