Thermal reduction and reoxidation of spinel-type Cu1−xZnxAl2O4

The thermochemical reactivity of the spinel-type quaternary metal oxide Cu_1–xZn_xAl₂O₄ has been investigated for different Cu:Zn ratios. In oxygen or inert gas atmospheres no considerable reduction is observed. In molecular hydrogen metal selective reduction of the Cu is found at relatively high temperature. The solid reduction product is made up of sintered, poorly dispersed metallic copper on a Zn-Al-O metal oxide support, a potential catalyst for the methanol synthesis. Owing to the measured high reduction temperature leading to the mentioned sintering of the metallic copper, the activity of this system cannot be high.Financial support by the Swiss National Science Foundation under project Nr. 2027933.89 is gratefully acknowledged.     

Combinatorial Chemistry for Ligand Development in Catalysis: Synthesis and Catalysis Screening of Peptidosulfonamide Tweezers on the Solid Phase

On the basis of a pyrrolidine tweezer 1, a library of peptidosulfonamide tweezers (15a-e, 16a-e) was synthesized on the solid phase. This library was screened in a simultaneous substrate screening procedure for the ability to enantioselectively catalyze the Ti(O-i-Pr)(4)-mediated addition of diethylzinc to aldehydes. One of the best solid-phase tweezer catalyst (i.e., 16d, giving an ee of 32% in solid-phase catalysis) was resynthesized in solution (compounds 20 and 21). The now homogeneous solution-phase catalysis showed even better enantioselectivity (i.e., up to 66%).     

Unexpected Hofmann elimination in the benzophenone-(phenylthio)acetic tetrabutylammonium salt photoredox system

The triplet state of benzophenone was quenched by the tetrabutylammonium salt of (phenylthio)acetic acid in acetonitrile solutions. The quenching event, following laser flash photolysis, resulted in the formation of a transient ion pair consisting of the benzophenone radical anion and the tetrabutylammonium cation. Subsequently this ion pair decays with the quaternary ammonium cation undergoing a Hofmann elimination to form butane-1 and tributylamine, which were detected in steady-state irradiation. This appears to be the first report of an ion pair consisting of a benzophenone radical anion and an organic cation (nonradical), in addition to the first report of a photoinduced Hofmann elimination in quaternary ammonium ions.     

Low temperature scanning force microscopy of the Si(111)-(7x7) surface

A low temperature scanning force microscope (SFM) operating in a dynamic mode in ultrahigh vacuum was used to study the Si(111)- (7x7) surface at 7.2 K. Not only the twelve adatoms but also the six rest atoms of the unit cell are clearly resolved for the first time with SFM. In addition, the first measurements of the short range chemical bonding forces above specific atomic sites are presented. The data are in good agreement with first principles computations and indicate that the nearest atoms in the tip and sample relax significantly when the tip is within a few A of the surface.     

Gamma-ray spectroscopy with relativistic exotic heavy-ions

Feasibility of gamma-ray spectroscopy at relativistic energies with exotic heavy-ions and new generation of germanium detectors (segmented Clover) is discussed. An experiment with such detector array and radioactive is discussed.
