Stabilization of the Closed-Ring Isomer of Spiropyran by Amide Naphthotube in Water and Its Application in Naked-Eye Detection of Toxic Paraoxon

The thermodynamically unstable, colourless closed-ring isomer of spiropyran can be stabilized in water by the anti-configurational isomer of amide naphthotube. The influence of the binding on the thermodynamics and kinetics of spiropyran have been studied. The complex was further used to prepare a test paper that allows naked-eye detection of toxic paraoxon.     

Recent Development in Ligation Methods for Glycopeptide and Glycoprotein Synthesis

Glycoproteins are produced by the post‐translational modification process of proteins and they play an important role in mediating various biological processes. Our understanding towards biochemical functions of individual glycoproteins has been seriously hampered due to the heterogeneous expression of carbohydrate parts in glycoproteins. Despite the advancement in recombinant expression and chromatographic techniques, the isolation of pure glycoforms remains nearly impossible. To obtain homogenous glycoproteins, tremendous efforts hves been spent in developing various ligation and glycosylation techniques. This minireview discusses selected methods for the preparation and ligation of glycopeptides. The importance of the development of new chemical synthesis method for glycoproteins has also been discussed, which would be one of the next directions in this field.     

Poly(terephthalic anhydride) single crystals: Morphology and crystal structure

Single crystals of poly(terephthalic anhydride) (PTA) have been grown using the confined thin film melt polymerization technique. Thin lamellae (ca. 50 Å) are found for low polymerization temperatures, with thick crystals forming for polymerization at 200°C. Shearing of the material shortly after the initiation of polymerization at 200°C yielded single crystal domains composed of fibrillar texture material; these samples gave [010] zone ED patterns complementing the [001] zone patterns from the unsheared CTFMP samples. A monoclinic, single chain, two repeat unit, unit cell (Pc11) is proposed based on four different electron diffraction zone patterns: a = 6.01 Å, b = 3.94₅ Å, c = 14.11 Å, α = 106.9°. Simulations, using the Cerius² program, of the corresponding molecular conformation, packing and electron diffraction (ED) patterns were performed; the ED simulations are in good agreement with the observed patterns. An R-factor of 0.23 is obtained based on a comparison of calculated and observed structure factors for the 39 independent ED reflections observed on the different zone patterns. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Essential independent sets and Hamiltonian cycles

An independent set S of a graph G is said to be essential if S has a pair of vertices distance two apart in G. We prove that if every essential independent set S of order k ≥ 2 in a k-connected graph of order p satisfies max {deg v:v ϵ S} ≥ ½ p, then g is hamiltonian. This generalizes the result of Fan (J. Combinatorial Theory B 37 (1984), 221–227). If we consider the essential independent sets of order k + 1 instead of k in the assumption of the above statement, we can no longer assure the existence a hamiltonian cycle. However, we can still give a lower bound to the length of a longest cycle. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

On the vertex face total chromatic number of planar graphs

Let G be a planar graph. The vertex face total chromatic number _χ13(G) of G is the least number of colors assigned to V(G)∪F(G) such that no adjacent or incident elements receive the same color. The main results of this paper are as follows: (1) We give the vertex face total chromatic number for all outerplanar graphs and modulus 3-regular maximal planar graphs. (2) We prove that if G is a maximal planar graph or a lower degree planar graph, i.e., ∠(G) ≤ 3, then _χ13(G) ≤ 6. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Reaction conducted under rather severe conditions for a colloidal catalyst - hydroformylation of propylene catalyzed by polymer-protected rhodium colloids

Hydroformylation of propylene has been conducted by a polymer-protected rhodium colloid catalyst with an activity of 130 mol butanal / g atom Rh·h. The neat colloid catalyst is stable enough for repeated use for 7 times lasting ∼50 h under the reaction condition (temperature: 363 K, pressure: 40 bar) with a total TON of 5,065 cycle / atom Rh.
