Strained aromatic oligoamide macrocycles as new molecular clips

Can one join both ends of a helix? A helical aromatic oligoamide was macrocyclized into a saddle-shaped bifunctional clip molecule that self-assembles into discrete circular dodecamers in the solid state and shows great potential for binding aromatic acid guests in solution. The cyclization step requires that the helix is only partly denatured in the reaction medium.     

Comparison of the structures of an atomic three-valence-electron system with a nuclear three-valence-neutron system

A comparison has been made between the states of a 3-valence-electron system and a 3-valence-neutron system. The fermions are supposed to move in a sphere. The structures and internal motions of the head-states (the lowest of a given^2S+1 L ) of these systems havingL=0,S=1/2 and 3/2, and even and odd parity have been investigated. We have found that the symmetry governing the particular quantum system plays an essential role. In particular, all the nodal surfaces in the head-states originate from symmetry but not from dynamics. Consequently, the head-states of different dynamic systems have similar structures and similar internal motions.     

Radiation from hot spots orbiting an extreme Reissner-Nordström black hole

The general-relativistic effects of an extreme Reissner-Nordström black hole on the flux of radiation emitted by a hot spot orbiting the hole with a thin accretion disk are investigated. The light curves, the redshift factor, and the solid angle against the spot orbit position are given. The results are then compared with those of a spot orbiting a Schwarzschild black hole.

Synthesis, Structure and Conductivity of the New Charge-transfer Salt (ET)_2(CH_2=CH-CH_2-SO_3)·H_2O

Stereochemical analysis of isopentenyl diphosphate isomerase type II from Staphylococcus aureus using chemically synthesized (S)- and (R)-[2-2H]isopentenyl diphosphates

[chemical reaction: see text]. To study the catalysis of isopentenyl diphosphate (IPP) isomerase type II from Staphylococcus aureus, which is a flavoprotein catalyzing the interconversion of IPP and dimethylallyl diphosphate, we have chemically synthesized (S)- and (R)-[2-2H]IPP and carried out stereochemical analysis of the reaction. Our results show that the C-2 deprotonation of IPP by this enzyme is pro-R stereospecific, suggesting a similar stereochemical course as the type I enzyme.     

A Comprehensive Review of Rosmarinic Acid: From Phytochemistry to Pharmacology and Its New Insight

Polyphenolic acids are the widely occurring natural products in almost each herbal plant, among which rosmarinic acid (RA, C₁₈H₁₆O₈) is well-known, and is present in over 160 species belonging to many families, especially the Lamiaceae. Aside from this herbal ingredient, dozens of its natural derivatives have also been isolated and characterized from many natural plants. In recent years, with the increasing focus on the natural products as alternative treatments, a large number of pharmacological studies have been carried out to demonstrate the various biological activities of RA such as anti-inflammation, anti-oxidation, anti-diabetes, anti-virus, anti-tumor, neuroprotection, hepatoprotection, etc. In addition, investigations concerning its biosynthesis, extraction, analysis, clinical applications, and pharmacokinetics have also been performed. Although many achievements have been made in various research aspects, there still exist some problems or issues to be answered, especially its toxicity and bioavailability. Thus, we hope that in the case of natural products, the present review can not only provide a comprehensive understanding on RA covering its miscellaneous research fields, but also highlight some of the present issues and future perspectives worth investigating later, in order to help us utilize this polyphenolic acid more efficiently, widely, and safely.     

A Note on Casoratian Solutions to Two-Dimensional Toda Lattice

In this short paper we generalize the conditions that Casoratian entries satisfy for the two-dlmenslonal Toda lattice. Although we finally conclude that our generalization is trivial in some sense for getting new solutions, our discussion is still helpful for the study of Wronskian technique.
