2‐Cyanoprop‐2‐yl dithiobenzoate mediated reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization of acrylonitrile targeting a polymer with a higher molecular weight

The reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) mediated by 2‐cyanoprop‐2‐yl dithiobenzoate was first applied to synthesize polyacrylonitrile (PAN) with a high molecular weight up to 32,800 and a polydispersity index as low as 1.29. The key to success was ascribed to the optimization of the experimental conditions to increase the fragmentation reaction efficiency of the intermediate radical. In accordance with the atom transfer radical polymerization of AN, ethylene carbonate was also a better solvent candidate for providing higher controlled/living RAFT polymerization behaviors than dimethylformamide and dimethyl sulfoxide. The various experimental parameters, including the temperature, the molar ratio of dithiobenzoate to the initiator, the molar ratio of the monomer to dithiobenzoate, the monomer concentration, and the addition of the comonomer, were varied to improve the control of the molecular weight and polydispersity index. The molecular weights of PANs were validated by gel permeation chromatography along with a universal calibration procedure and intrinsic viscosity measurements. ¹H NMR analysis confirmed the high chain‐end functionality of the resultant polymers. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Kinetic behaviour of aluminum naphthenate/benzene system in process of gelation and degradation

The kinetic behaviour of aluminum naphthenate/benzene system in the process of gelation and degradation was systematically studied. The results obtained from the kinetic experiments indicated that the gelation stage was in accordance with a kinetic model of an auto-catalytic first-order reaction, and the degradation stage was a simple first-order reaction. The rate constants in these two stages at various temperaturs were measured. And the determined apparent activation energies for the gelation stage and for the degradation stage are 27.5±2.0 and 37.7±2.3 kJ/mol, respectively.     

Numerical analysis for the periodic response of nonsmooth dynamic systems of high-dimension

This paper deals with the numerical solution of high dimensional dynamic systems with nonsmooth characteristics, such as structural elastoplasticity, mechanical clearance and dry friction. As a stable periodic response of the system attracts its transient response, it may be extracted from the transient response somehow. The paper suggests a novel iteration scheme to extrapolate the periodic response from a short time history of its transient response by curve fitting. Compared with the current schemes such as shooting and incremental harmonic balancing, the present scheme makes full use of the information within the transient response and the system characters, then its computation efficiency has increased by an order and the numerical convergence depending on the initial iteration has greatly improved.The subject supported by the Chinese Foundation of Aeronautical Science     

Temperature dependence of magnetization in nanocrystalline FeCoZr alloy

The temperature dependence of magnetization of a nanocrystalline Fe₆₀Co₃₀Zr₁₀ alloy annealed at various temperatures to varying crystal sizes was investigated down to 5 K in the field range up to 5 T. The fitting procedure gave T^3/2 as the leading term irrespective of the crystal size. We suggest that the increase of the coefficient by this term for smaller crystals may be connected to an increased relative volume of their surface.     

Preparation of nanometer MgO by sol-gel auto-combustion

Nanometer MgO was prepared via a sol-gel auto-combustion technique using magnesium nitrate as raw material and citric acid as chelating agent. IR spectra of the dried gel were used to investigate the structure of the precursors. By studying the different TG curves of magnesium citrate gel prepared by different methods, we found that a combustion process occurred and the nitrate ions acted as an oxidant in the combustion process. TEM photographs of synthesized powders from the sol-gel auto-combustion showed that the crystallites were uniform in size. In addition, the XRD pattern of this sample showed that the particle size was 8.9 nm. The BET curves, in turn, showed that the specific surface of the sample was 26.34 m²/g. Apparatus for High-Resolution Solid Hydrogen Matrix Isolation Spectroscopy and Its Application

Apparatus integrating a Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectrometer and a mid-infrared difference frequency generation (DFG) laser spectrometer was built for the study of the matrix isolation spectrum in solid molecular hydrogen. A 3-cm-long molecular hydrogen crystal was grown in a liquid-helium Dewar, and its infrared absorption spectrum in the 1-5 μm region was recorded to test the system. The W₀(0) (ν=0←0, J=6←0) line around 2410 cm⁻¹ of solid hydrogen was investigated with the DFG laser spectroscopy. High-resolution matrix isolation spectrum of CO² co-deposited with hydrogen on a BaF₂ cold plate at liquid-helium temperature was studied.     

Synthesis and transition temperatures of liquid crystals incorporating a 1,4-tetrafluorophenylene unit

Two homologous series of mesogenic materials which incorporate a 1,4-tetrafluorophenylene moiety and a terminal cyano- or nitro-substituent have been synthesized by using palladiumcatalysed coupling procedures. The compounds exhibit nematic and/or smectic A phases.     

Identification of peroxyacetic acid uroporphyrin I in the urine of patients with congenital erythropoietic porphyria by liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry

A new porphyrin, peroxyacetic acid uroporphyrin I, has been isolated from the urine of patients with congenital erythropoietic porphyria by reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography. The porphyrin was characterized by high resolution mass spectrometry and by typical chemical reactions of a peroxyacid.
