Crown-containing butadienyl dyes 8. Structures and complexation of chromogenic dithia-15(18)-crown-5(6) ethers

The structures of new butadienyl dyes of the benzothiazole series containing the dithia-15-crown-5 (2a) or dithia-18-crown-6 (2b) fragments were established by X-ray diffraction. Complexation of dyes 2a,b with Hg²⁺, Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺, Ag⁺, Zn²⁺, and alkaline-earth cations in aqueous-acetonitrile solutions was studied by spectrophotometry. At a high percentage of water in solutions (P _w ≈ 50%), these dyes have a very low ability to bind Pb²⁺ cations (logK < 2) and virtually do not bind Cd²⁺, Zn²⁺, and alkaline-earth cations. At the same time, these dyes form stable 1: 1 complexes with Hg²⁺ and Ag⁺ cations at all P _w. The stability constants of complexes with the Ag⁺ cation increase with increasing P _w because the free energy of hydration of this cation is much lower than the free energy of solvation in acetonitrile. In the P _w range from 0 to 75%, the stability constants of the complexes of dyes 2a,b with the Hg²⁺ cation are larger than those of the corresponding complexes with the Ag⁺ cation by more than four orders of magnitude. Preparation and characterization of molecularly imprinted electropolymerized carbon electrodes

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) selective for fluorescein, rhodamine or 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) were electropolymerized onto graphite electrodes using an aqueous solution equimolar in resorsinol/ortho-phenylenediamine and in the presence of the template molecule. For the dyes, the MIP-coated electrodes showed higher affinity for their template molecule than for a non-template dye. The 2,4-D-MIP-coated electrode showed a concentration dependent response for 2,4-D as compared to the polymer-coated electrode prepared in the absence of template molecule.     

One-pot synthesis of 5-(substituted-amino)pyrazoles

An efficient and mild one-pot synthesis of substituted 5-alkylamino and/or 5-(arylamino)pyrazoles is described. A suitably decorated β-ketoamide, an aryl or alkyl hydrazine and Lawesson's reagent are suspended in THF/Py and gently heated to yield the requisite 5-aminopyrazoles.     

Synthesis of tetrahydropyrido[2,3-b]pyrazine scaffolds from 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoropyridine derivatives

Reactions between N,N′-dimethylethylene diamine and a range of 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoropyridine derivatives provided ready access to the corresponding tetrahydropyrido[2,3-b]pyrazine systems if the substituent located at the 4-position of the pyridine ring was either hydrogen or an electron withdrawing substituent. In contrast, the presence of electron donating substituents at the 4-position made the formation of ring-fused products much more difficult. The two-step sequential nucleophilic substitution procedures from pentafluoropyridine gave convenient and adaptable methodology for the synthesis of polyfunctional tetrahydropyrido[2,3-b]pyrazine scaffolds of interest to the life science discovery arenas.     

Processes of flats induced by higher dimensional processes III

Stationary processes of k-flats in ^d can be thought of as point processes on the Grassmannian _k ^d of k-dimensional subspaces of ^d . If such a process is sampled by a (d–k+ j)-dimensional space F, it induces a process of j-flats in F. In this work we will investigate the possibility of determining the original k-process from knowledge of the intensity measures of the induced j-processes. We will see that this is impossible precisely when 1<k<d–1 and j=0,...,2[r/2]–1, where r is the rank of the manifold _k ^d . We will show how the problem is equivalent to the study of the kernel of various integral transforms, these will then be investigated using harmonic analysis on Grassmannian manifolds.The research of the first and third authors was supported in part by NSF grants DMS-9207019 and DMS-9304284. The Boolean Prime Ideal Theorem Plus Countable Choice Do Not Imply Dependent Choice

Two Fraenkel-Mostowski models are constructed in which the Boolean Prime Ideal Theorem is true. In both models, AC for countable sets is true, but AC for sets of cardinality 2 and the 2m = m principle are both false.
