Modern observations based on general relativity indicate that the spatial geometry of the expanding, large-scale Universe is very nearly Euclidean. This basic empirical fact is at the core of the so-called “flatness problem”, which is widely perceived to be a major outstanding problem of modern cosmology and as such forms one of the prime motivations behind inflationary models. An inspection of the literature and some further critical reflection however quickly reveals that the typical formulation of this putative problem is fraught with questionable arguments and misconceptions and that it is moreover imperative to distinguish between different varieties of problem. It is shown that the observational fact that the large-scale Universe is so nearly flat is ultimately no more puzzling than similar “anthropic coincidences”, such as the specific (orders of magnitude of the) values of the gravitational and electromagnetic coupling constants. In particular, there is no fine-tuning problem in connection to flatness of the kind usually argued for. The arguments regarding flatness and particle horizons typically found in cosmological discourses in fact address a mere single issue underlying the standard FLRW cosmologies, namely the extreme improbability of these models with respect to any “reasonable measure” on the “space of all spacetimes”. This issue may be expressed in different ways and a phase space formulation, due to Penrose, is presented here. We have performed detailed studies on the dynamics of a frequency comb produced by a mode-locked laser diode (MLLD). Orthogonal control of the pulse repetition rate and the pulse-to-pulse carrier-envelope phase slippage is achieved by appropriate combinations of the respective error signals to actuate the diode injection current and the saturable absorber bias voltage. When the interbrane separation in the compact Randall-Sundrum model is stabilized using the Goldberger-Wise mechanism, a potential is generated for the four-dimensional field, the radion, that encodes this separation. Coherent oscillations of the radion in the early universe will produce an exponential growth in the number of brane particles due to parametric amplification. We describe the conditions necessary for this process, which resembles the preheating phase in inflation, and show the exponential growth in the case of a scalar field confined to a brane. 相似文献

Lipoxygenases (LOs) comprise a class of substrate activating mononuclear nonheme iron enzymes which catalyze the hydroperoxidation of unsaturated fatty acids. A commonly proposed mechanism for LO catalysis involves H-atom abstraction by an FeIII-OH- site, best described as a proton coupled electron transfer (PCET) process, followed by direct reaction of O2 with the resulting substrate radical to yield product. An alternative mechanism that has also been discussed involves the abstraction of a proton from the substrate by the FeIII-OH leading to a sigma-organoiron intermediate, where the subsequent sigma bond insertion of dioxygen into the C-Fe bond completes the reaction. H-atom abstraction is favored by a high E(o) of the FeII/FeIII couple and high pK(a) of water bound to the ferrous state, while an organoiron mechanism would be favored by a low E(o) (to keep the site oxidized) and a high pK(a) of water bound to the ferric state (to deprotonate the substrate). A first coordination sphere mutant of soybean LO (N694C) has been prepared and characterized by near-infrared circular dichroism (CD) and variable-temperature, variable-field (VTVH) magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopies (FeII site), as well as UV/vis absorption, UV/vis CD, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies (FeIII site). These studies suggest that N694C has a lowered E degrees of the FeII/FeIII couple and a raised pKa of water bound to the ferric site relative to wild type soybean lipoxygenase-1 (WT sLO-1) which would favor the organoiron mechanism. However, the observation in N694C of a significant deuterium isotope effect, anaerobic reduction of iron by substrate, and a substantial decrease in k(cat) (approximately 3000-fold) support H-atom abstraction as the relevant substrate-activation mechanism in sLO-1. 相似文献

By varying the density of an ultracold 88Sr sample from 10(9) to>10(12) cm(-3), we make the first definitive measurement of the density-related frequency shift and linewidth broadening of the 1S0-3P1 optical clock transition in an alkaline earth system. In addition, we report the most accurate measurement to date of the 88Sr 1S0-3P1 optical clock transition frequency. Transfer of a high-stability and ultralow-jitter timing signal through a fiber network via a mode-locked fiber laser is demonstrated. With active cancellation of the fiber-transmission noise, the fractional instability for transfer of a radio-frequency signal through a 6.9- (4.5-) km round-trip installed (laboratory-based) fiber network is below 9(7) x 10(-15) tau(-1/2) for an averaging time tau > or = 1 s, limited by the noise floor of the frequency-counting system. The noise cancellation reduces the rms timing jitter, integrated over a bandwidth from 1 Hz to 100 kHz, to 37 (20) fs for the installed (laboratory-based) fiber network, representing what is to our knowledge the lowest reported jitter for transfer of a timing signal over kilometer-scale distances using an installed (laboratory-based) optical-fiber network. 相似文献
