Micro-structure can talk when documentation is missing. In ancient Roman or medieval periods, kings, queens, or just rich people decorated their clothes or even their horse covers richly with miniature jewels or metal threads. The origin or the fabrication techniques of these ancient threads is often unknown. Thirteen thread samples made of gold or gilt silver manufactured during the last sixteen hundred years are investigated for the micro-structure in terms of dislocation density, crystallite size, and planar defects. In a few cases, these features are compared with sub-structure of similar metallic threads prepared in modern, twentieth century workshops. The sub-structure is determined by X-ray line profile analysis, using high resolution diffractograms with negligible instrumental broadening. On the basis of the sub-structure parameters, we attempt to assess the metal-threads manufacturing procedures on samples stemming from the fourth century A.D. until now. 相似文献

A newly developed ceramic fibre hydrophone with an active element as small as 0.25 mm in diameter is described in this work. Lead magnesium niobate-lead titanate (PMN-PT) ceramic fibre with a nominal composition of 0.65Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.35PbTiO3 was fabricated by an extrusion method. PMN-PT single crystals were ground to a powder form and then mixed with poly(acrylic) acid to form a homogenous slurry. The fibre was extruded by pressing the slurry through a spinneret and then sintering at 1250 °C for crystallization. The electrical characteristics of the PMN-PT fibre were evaluated by measuring the relative permittivity and the impedance spectrum. A piezoelectric PMN-PT fibre hydrophone was fabricated and its sensitivity, angular response, and spatial resolution were evaluated. A novel technique to overcome the long-term drift and hysteresis of a scanning Fabry–Perot filter was developed and applied to wavelength and power monitoring of DWDM system. By using the comb peaks generated by a temperature-stabilized, near threshold-biased Fabry–Perot diode laser as wavelength reference for the scanning Fabry–Perot filter, wavelength and power measurement accuracy of better than ±10 pm and 0.2 dB, respectively, were achieved. 相似文献

Summary A critical issue in drug discovery utilizing combinatorial chemistry as part of the discovery process is the choice of scaffolds to be used for a proper presentation, in a three-dimensional space, of the critical elements of structure necessary for molecular recognition (binding) and information transfer (agonist/ antagonist). In the case of polypeptide ligands, considerations related to the properties of various backbone structures (-helix, -sheets, etc.; , space) and those related to three-dimensional presentation of side-chain moieties (topography; (chi) space) must be addressed, although they often present quite different elements in the molecular recognition puzzle. We have addressed aspects of this problem by examining the three-dimensional structures of chemically different scaffolds at various distances from the scaffold to evaluate their putative diversity. We find that chemically diverse scaffolds can readily become topographically similar. We suggest a topographical approach involving design in chi space to deal with these problems. 相似文献
