Long-lived muonium in water revealed by pulsed muons

The relaxation rate of muonium in pure water has been found to be smaller than 0.05 × 10⁶ s^?1. With the aid of pulsed muong. μSR and MuSR measurements have been carried out over a longer time range than ever achieved. The results indicate a stability of thermal muonium in water from 3 to 29°C.     

Peierls transition in TaS3

Transition-metal trichalcogenide, TaS₃, with an orthorhombic structure was found to undergo a metal-semiconductor transition at 270 K. Electron diffraction reveals diffuse scattering above room temperature and superlattice spots at a lower temperature. These phenomena are interpreted in terms of Peierls transition.     

The afterglow characteristics of xenon pulsed plasma for mercury-free fluorescent lamps

The similarity of the abundance of heavy nuclei in the Universe with that of the nuclei produced in the fully reproducible reactions of protons in host metals like palladium, nickel or others is evident and can be described by the same exponential function of the distribution probability N(Z) depending on the proton number Z of the nuclides. This agrees with the earlier derived consequence of a 3 ⁿ relation for magic numbers and an alternative foundation of the nuclear shell model. Compared to femtometer-attosecond reactions in the big bang, the low energy nuclear reactions in the host metals have picometer distances and megasecond duration. For this picometer distance, a combination of the swimming electron layer and Debye screening model with a metal-plasma dielectric model is presented.     

A new modulation method with range resolution for ultrasonic Doppler flow sensing

This paper proposes a new pair of sequences whose cross-correlation values are zero except for the peak value and presents a new modulation method for an ultrasonic Doppler flowmeter with high sensitivity utilizing these sequences. In this method, transmitted and received waves are modulated and demodulated, respectively, by the specified new sequences. Since unfavourable reflected waves can be almost completely eliminated by this proposed modulation method, a high signal-to-noise ratio is easily achieved. Elementary experimental results are also given.

A model calculation on adsorption of CO on the flat,stepped and kinked nickel surfaces

The adsorption of CO on Ni was investigated by quantum chemical calculations using the CNDO/2 tight binding method. The surfaces used as models are the (111), 4(111) × (111), 3(111) × (110) and 3(111) × (100) surfaces. The CO bond is weakened in this sequence of surfaces. The active sites for the CO bond fission are the trench regions of the step and kink structures. The Ni 3d orbitals play an important role for the weakening of the CO bond, though their contribution is small for the Ni-C bond formation.     

Visible-light-driven surface reconstruction of mesoporous TiO2: toward visible-light absorption and enhanced photocatalytic activities

The surface structure of mesoporous TiO(2) is reconstructed via a visible-light-driven reaction with benzyl alcohol molecules at mild, anaerobic conditions, which substantially extends its visible-light absorption and photocatalytic activities.     

Importance of punching and workability in non-oriented electrical steel sheets

In order to reduce energy loss in motors, the use of high-efficiency non-oriented electrical steel sheets and an optimal motor core design are important. It is also crucial to minimize the deterioration of magnetic properties during the motor core manufacturing process. Accordingly, this report evaluates the effects of cutting and clamping methods on the deterioration factors of motor cores. Magnetic properties are largely influenced by both cutting and clamping methods. While it is difficult to avoid cutting and clamping altogether, it is necessary to adopt suitable production conditions and minimize the deterioration involved.
