Anomalous temperature dependence of the dielectric and optical properties in ferroelectric liquid crystals

The anomalous temperature dependence of the sign of the spontaneous polarization in a biphenyl ester series of ferroelectric liquid crystals is reported. The reversal of the sign of the spontaneous polarization in the chiral smectic C phase of 2MBNCBC ((S)-2'-methylbutyl-4'-n- nonylcarbonyloxy-(l,l'-biphenyl)-l-carboxylate) is observed at T_m. This anomaly is studied in detail as functions of the length of the terminal alkyl chain, the applied electric field, the frequency and the applied hydrostatic pressure. T_m has been confirmed to depend on the length of the terminal chain and the applied pressure. However, it is independent of the applied field and the measuring frequency. In the mixture of these compounds, this anomaly is also observed.     

Reinvestigation of thiabenzenes A new result of the reaction of 9-phenylthioxanthylium salt and phenyllithium

“9,10-Diphenyl-10-thiaanthracene” was found to be a mixture of monomeric species such as 9-phenyl-, 9,9-diphenyl-, 3,9-diphenyl-, 3,9,9-triphenyl- and 4,9,9-triphenylthioxanthenes, and several kinds of dimers and so on. Some of them were formed by radical phenylation. The mechanism was proposed.     

Catalytic, highly enantio, and diastereoselective nitroso diels-alder reaction

This communication presents studies that nitroso Diels-Alder adduct has been furnished in uniformly high yield and high enantioselectivity using nitrosopyridine as a substrate and copper as a catalyst. The obtained Diels-Alder adduct was easily transformed to corresponding chiral amino alcohols without loss of enantioselectivity.     

Preparation and electrochemical behaviour of hydrophobic vitamin B(12) covalently immobilized onto platinum electrode

Hydrophobic vitamin B(12) was covalently immobilized onto a platinum electrode surface, and the immobilized complex exhibits Co(ii)/Co(i) redox couple and in situ the Co(i) species reacts with phenethyl bromide to form styrene under irradiation with visible light with a turnover number of over 6000 for 1 h.     

Measurement of the CP asymmetry in B-->Xs gamma

Direct CP violation in the b-->sgamma process is a sensitive probe of physics beyond the standard model. We report a measurement of the CP asymmetry in B-->X(s)gamma, where the hadronic recoil system X(s) is reconstructed using a pseudoreconstruction technique. In this approach there is negligible contamination from b-->dgamma decays, which are expected to have a much larger CP asymmetry. We find A(CP)=0.002+/-0.050(stat)+/-0.030(syst) for B-->X(s)gamma events having recoil mass smaller than 2.1 GeV/c(2). The analysis is based on a data sample of 140 fb(-1) recorded at the upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) storage ring.
