Direct Conjugate Addition of Alkynes with α,β‐Unsaturated Carbonyl Compounds Catalyzed by NCN‐Pincer Ru Complexes

NCN‐pincer Ru‐complexes containing bis(oxazolinyl)phenyl ligands serve as suitable catalysts in the direct conjugate additions of α,β‐unsaturated carbonyl compounds, including ketones, esters, and amides, as well as vinylphosphonates, giving various β‐alkynyl carbonyl and phosphonate compounds. A bis(oxazolinyl)phenyl (phebox)–Ru complex also catalyzes the asymmetric conjugate addition of an alkyne with a β‐substituted, α,β‐unsaturated ketone to produce a chiral β‐alkynyl ketone.     

Cross‐sectional structural characterization of the surface of exfoliated HOPG using HRTEM‐EELS

We analyzed the surface atomic structure of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) substrate exfoliated with adhesive tape, using high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy‐electron energy‐loss spectroscopy (STEM‐EELS). The surface step height of the exfoliated HOPG substrate was determined using high‐angle annular dark‐field‐scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF‐STEM) images and the depth profiles of the EELS spectra of a cross‐sectioned thin foil specimen prepared via focused ion beam milling. The exfoliated surface of the HOPG substrate presented disordered and curved graphene layers. The STEM‐EELS measurements indicated that upon exfoliation, the surface of the HOPG substrate reacted with atmospheric water and oxygen molecules.     

Protonation susceptibility of functional groups: A new parameter for interpreting chemical ionization mass spectra of bifunctional organic compounds

A new parameter, the protonation susceptibility (PS), of functional groups in the chemical ionization mass spectrometry of bifunctional organic compounds is presented. In terms of quasi-equilibrium theory of unimolecular decomposition of the molecular protonated ion of [MH]⁺, the relative PS corresponds to the relative area under P(E) curves of [MH]⁺ ions that have a proton at different functional groups. Numerical evaluation of the PS values of pertinent functional groups was made by using particularly selected compounds. The results clearly indicate that PS is independent of proton affinity (PA).     

Direct monitoring of DNA cleavages catalyzed by an ATP-dependent deoxyribonuclease on a 27 MHz quartz-crystal microbalance

Kinetic studies of enzymatic DNA cleavage reactions (the enzyme binding, hydrolysis along DNA strands, and then release of the enzyme from the completely hydrolyzed ssDNA) were carried out on a 27 MHz quartz-crystal microbalance.     

Collisional granular flow as a micropolar fluid

We show that a micropolar fluid model successfully describes collisional granular flows on a slope. A micropolar fluid is the fluid with internal structures in which coupling between the spin of each particle and the macroscopic velocity field is taken into account. It is a hydrodynamical framework suitable for granular systems which consists of particles with macroscopic size. We demonstrate that the model equations can quantitatively reproduce the velocity and the angular velocity profiles obtained from the numerical simulation of the collisional granular flow on a slope using a simple estimate for the parameters in the theory.     

Synthesis of macrocyclic cage compounds by diamine-dihalide one-step coupling reaction

Macropolycyclic cage compounds were synthesized by a direct reaction between diamines and bis(bromomethyl) compounds. The procedure for constructing the polycyclic cage structure is simple and straightforward. The macropolycyclic compounds obtainable from this cyclization procedure are three-dimensional cage compounds, and any other isomers were not obtained except for two examples. Benzene, pyridine, and aliphatic units could be introduced into the cage structure. The macrocycles that have strong cation affinity were obtained as their potassium complexes.     

The polished precipitate electrode: A new voltammetric method with the solid electrode

A new surface-renewal technique at the solid electrode has been developed, based on continuous polishing. Well-defined and reproducible current-voltage curves similar to those obtained in polarography are given by the "polished precipitate electrode" (PPE). The method can be used for the continuous determination of electroactive substances and for the study of electrode reaction mechanisms at the solid-liquid interface.
