Insertion of arynes into carbon-halogen sigma-bonds: regioselective acylation of aromatic rings

Arynes were found to insert into carbon-halogen sigma-bonds of various acid halides, enabling acyl and halogen moieties to be introduced simultaneously into adjacent positions of aromatic rings.     

Time-resolved in situ ATR-IR observations of the process of sorption of water into a poly(2-methoxyethyl acrylate) film

A process of water sorption into a biocompatible polymer, poly(2-methoxyethyl acrylate) (PMEA), was investigated by time-resolved, in situ, attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy. Evidence for three different types of hydrated water in PMEA, that is, nonfreezing water, freezing bound water, and freezing water, were found. Each hydration structure was elucidated at the functional group level. Nonfreezing water, which never crystallizes, even at -100 degrees C, has a C=O...H-O type of hydrogen bonding interaction with the carbonyl group of PMEA. Freezing bound water, which crystallizes in a heating process below 0 degrees C, interacts with the methoxy moiety in the PMEA side chain terminal. Freezing water, which crystallizes approximately 0 degrees C, has bulk-water-like structure with an O-H...O-H hydrogen bonds network. It has been concluded from the present study that the methoxy moiety in the PMEA side chain terminal plays an important role for the excellent biocompatibility of PMEA.     

A Novel Affinity Capillary Electrophoresis for the Detection of Gene Mutation Using Immobilized Oligonucleotides-Polyacrylamide Conjugate

It has been found that small mutations of certain genes are the definitive origin of many heritable disorders and cancers with striking development of recent molecular biology. Such new findings have taken close-up of the importance of gene mutation assays based on the difference of DNA base sequences in diagnostic or medical field Capillary electrophoresis can be a good candidate for an ideal method on such gene analysis, because the methods can be performed with trace amount of samples, high resolution and shorter running time. We have established an effect of oligonucleotide, which was introduced onto capillary inner surface, on the recognition of an overall sequence of sample DNA fragments as an affinity ligand.     

Use of stable carbon isotope ratios to determine the source of cypermethrin in so-called natural plant extract formulations used for organic farming

Some natural plant extract formulations (NPEFs, also referred to as essential oils) used in organic farming have been shown to contain synthetic pesticides. We obtained samples of four NPEFs (Muso, Hekiro, Kensogen-Ten, and Nurse Green) that were contaminated with the synthetic pyrethroid cypermethrin, and we used gas chromatography coupled with combustion, cryofocusing, and isotope ratio mass spectrometry to determine the stable carbon isotope ratios (δ¹³C) for the cypermethrin in the four NPEF samples, as well as in ten cypermethrin reagents and two commercial pesticide formulations (Agrothrin emulsion and Agrothrin water-dispersible powder). Our goal was to identify the source of the cypermethrin in the NPEFs. Cryofocusing markedly sharpened the cypermethrin peak and thus improved the accuracy and precision of the determined δ¹³C values. The δ¹³C values (±?SD) of the 16 cypermethrin samples ranged from ?28.3?±?0.2 to ?24.5?±?0.2?‰. Surprisingly, the four NPEFs showed similar δ¹³C values (?26.8 to ?27.3?‰), suggesting that the cypermethrin in all the samples came from the same source (either the same chemical reaction or the same primary material). This possibility was supported by previously published results. In addition, the δ¹³C values of the two commercial pesticides were similar to the values for the NPEFs, suggesting that the commercial pesticides had been diluted and sold as NPEFs.     

Near-Infrared Imaging Using a High-Speed Monitoring Near Infrared Hyperspectral Camera(Compovision)

This review paper reports near-infrared (NIR) imaging studies using a newly-developed NIR camera, Compovision. Compovision can measure a significantly wide area of 150 mm×250 mm at high speed of between 2 and 5 s. It enables a wide spectral region measurement in the 1 000～2 350 nm range at 6 nm intervals. We investigated the potential of Compovision in the applications to industrial problems such as the evaluation of pharmaceutical tablets and polymers. Our studies have demonstrated that NIR imaging based on Compovision can solve several issues such as long acquisition times and relatively low sensitivity of detection. NIR imaging with Compovision is strongly expected to be applied not only to pharmaceutical tablet monitoring and polymer characterization but also to various applications such as those to food products, biomedical substances and organic and inorganic materials.     

Effect of Hydrated Ionic Liquid on Photocycle and Dynamics of Photoactive Yellow Protein

The mechanism by which proteins are solvated in hydrated ionic liquids remains an open question. Herein, the photoexcitation dynamics of photoactive yellow protein dissolved in hydrated choline dihydrogen phosphate (Hy[ch][dhp]) were studied by transient absorption and transient grating spectroscopy. The photocyclic reaction of the protein in Hy[ch][dhp] was similar to that observed in the buffer solution, as confirmed by transient absorption spectroscopy. However, the structural change of the protein during the photocycle in Hy[ch][dhp] was found to be different from that observed in the buffer solution. The known change in the diffusion coefficient of the protein was apparently suppressed in high concentrations of [ch][dhp], plausibly due to stabilization of the secondary structure.
