Synthesis of 2,5-diethyl-3,4-bis(trifluoromethyl)furan and its derivatives

The addition reaction of propionaldehyde to hexafluoro-2-butyne ( 1 ) under γ-ray irradiation gave trans-6,6,6-trifluoro-4-trifluoromethyl-4-hexen-3-one ( 2 ) and 4,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)octa-3,6-dione ( 3 ). The latter compound was treated with sulfuric acid to give 2,5-diethyl-3,4-bis(trifluoromethyl)furan ( 4a ). Several reactions, such as bromination, dehydrobromination and oxidation, were carried out to prepare derivatives of 4a .     

Electrical conductivity of π-conjugated polymers with nitro substituents

π-Conjugated polymers bearing nitro substituent(s), e.g., poly(aryleneethynylene) (PAE) type polymers and poly(4,8-dinitroanthraquinone-1,5-diyl) P(4,8-NO₂-1,5-AQ), show semiconducting properties with electrical conductivities of an order of 10⁻⁷ to 10⁻⁶ S · cm⁻¹ at room temperature without special oxidation and reduction of the polymer. P(4,8-NO₂-1,5-AQ) shows a large shift of phase in alternating current (ac) measurements and a unique magnetism at low temperature.     

Mössbauer spectroscopy of magnetite microcrystals dispersed in a polyvinyl alcohol film

The formation of magnetite microcrystals in an aqueous solution containing stoichiometric quantities of iron chlorides and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) at 90 °C has been studied by means of Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The crystallite size of the microcrystals was estimated to be 100–200 Å in diameter.     

Absolute branching fraction measurements of exclusive D+ semileptonic decays

Using data collected at the psi(3770) resonance with the CLEO-c detector at the Cornell e+e- storage ring, we present improved measurements of the absolute branching fractions of D+decays to K0e+ve, pi0e+ve, K*0e+ve, and p0e+ve, and the first observation and absolute branching fraction measurement of D+ --> omega e+ve. We also report the most precise tests to date of isospin invariance in semileptonic D0 and D+ decays.     

Photon transitions in Upsilon(2S) and Upsilon(3S) decays

We have studied the inclusive photon spectra in Upsilon(2S) and Upsilon(3S) decays using a large statistics data sample obtained with the CLEO III detector. We present the most precise measurements of electric dipole (E1) photon transition rates and photon energies for Upsilon(2S) --> gammachi(bJ)(1P) and Upsilon(3S) --> gammachi(bJ)(2P) (J = 0, 1, 2). We measure the rate for a rare E1 transition Upsilon(3S) --> gammachi(b0)(1P) for the first time. We also set upper limits on the rates for the hindered magnetic dipole (M1) transitions to the eta(b)(1S) and eta(b)(2S) states.

Testing of printed circuit board solder joints by speckle correlation techniques

A photographic technique of speckle correlations is demonstrated to produce results analogous to the holographic correlation technique for the testing of printed circuit board solder joints. More stability and simplicity can be obtained by means of the speckle correlation technique which allows the reduction in resolving power that is necessary for the detection process.
