13C nuclear magnetic resonance studies of cellulose acetate

¹³C-NMR spectra of ring carbons and O-acetyl carbonyl carbons of cellulose acetate (CA) in dimethyl sulfoxide-d₆ were analyzed. The CA samples with the degree of substitution (DS) ranging from 0.84 and 1.91 were prepared by homogeneous acetylation of cellulose with acetic anhydride in a 10% LiCl/dimethyl acetamide solvent. It was found that the use of these low DS samples permitted easier assignments not only of the ring carbon but also of the O-acetyl carbonyl carbon signals. The assignments were confirmed by comparing with the ¹H-NMR spectra of the samples obtained by complete acetylation of the corresponding CA samples with acetyl-d₃ chloride. Two methods for determining the distribution of O-acetyl groups of CA, i.e., the relative DS at the three different types of hydroxyl groups, were developed. One is based on the measurements of the relative intensities of the signals for the ring carbons and the other is based on the measurements of the relative intensities of the signals for the O-acetyl carbonyl carbons.     

Fluorescence and Laser photolysis studies on 1,2,4,5-tetracy anobenzene CT complexes in micellar solutions

CT complexes of 1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene were formed in the inner part of neutral micelles and in the surface region of ionic ones. The excitation of the CT absorption band of these complexes gives broad and structureless CT fluorescence spectra, their lifetimes being relatively short (≈10 ns). Micellar effect upon ionic photodissociation was observed, and their quantum yeild is smaller than that obtained in acetonitrile. These results are quite different from those on another typical excited CT system of pyrene and N,N-dimethylaniline.     

Preparation of phosphorus-containing polymers—XVI. Synthesis of phosphorus-containing polyanhydride-imides

Phosphorus-containing polyanhydride-imides were synthesized from N,N-bis(4-carboxyphthalimido)-3,3′-diphenylalkylphosphine oxide, 3,3′-[N,N′-bis(4-carboxyphthalimido)]benzophenone and their mixtures in two steps via the diacetyl derivatives of the bisimide-carboxylic acids. The resulting polymers have reduced viscosities of 0.06–0.14 dl/g and are soluble in polar aprotic solvents such as DMA, DMF and DMSO, and conc. H₂SO₄ etc. They have good hydrolytic stability for moisture and water. Phosphorus-containing polymers have little heat-resistance and poor flame-retardance. The benefit of incorporating phosphorus in the polymers is small.     

Stereoselective synthesis of (+)-cerulenin from d-glucose

(+)-Cerulenin $\text{1a}$ was synthesized stereoselectively from D-glucose.

Chiroptical studies of sugars. Part IV. Proposal of the glycosidic heteroatom [helicity rule in 1-thio-D-glycopyranosides

1-Thio-$\text{D}$-dlycopyranosides gave CD bands at 220 nm (n→δ^* of glycosidic sulfur). Their [θ] were shown as the sum of the two effects from ring oxygen and -OH at C-2, leading to the glycosidic heteroatom helicity rule to predict the configurations and conformations at C-1 and C-2.     

13C-NMR studies on the cevanine alkaloids : the application of 13C-NMR spectrum for structure elucidation of new alkaloids,baimonidine and isoverticine

The ¹³C-NMR spectra of seven cavanine alkaloids isolated from Veratrum and Fritillaria plants were measured and their signals were assigned, and these results were applicated for structure elucidation of two new cevanine alkaloids, baimonidine and isoverticine, isolated from mature Fritillaria verticillata.
