Hydrolysable tannins having enantiomeric dehydrohexahydroxydiphenoyl group: Revised structure of terchebin and structure of granatin B

Revised structure of terchebin is shown by II-B. Granatin B, a new ellagitannin, has structure V in which partial structure Ic?Id is enantiomeric to Ia?Ib in II-B and geraniin.     

Study of resolved high-pT neutral pions at the CERN ISR

The inclusive production of π⁰ at large values of p_T in pp collisions at the ISR has been studied. In this experiment the two photons are resolved and separately measured for pT values of up to 6 GeV/c, giving confidence that the desired signal has been separated from various backgrounds.     

Affinity of Hemicellulose for Cellulose Produced by Acetobacter Xylinum

Cellulose composites were produced by culturing Acetobacter aceti subsp. xylinum (ATCC 53524, agitation tolerant strain) under shaking and agitating conditions in the presence of 2% pine or beech Björkman lignin-carbohydrate complexes (LCCs) or six different types of hemicellulosic polysaccharides including glucuronoxylan, glucomannan, O-acetyl-glucuronoxylan, arabinoglucuronoxylan, arabinogalactan and xyloglucan. Hemicellulosic polysaccharide contents in cellulose composites were similar in spite of the differences in culture, shaking and agitating conditions. On the basis of hemicellulosic polysaccharide contents and X-ray diffraction patterns after extraction by dilute NaOH solution, glucomannan family polysaccharides were found to have the highest affinity to bacterial cellulose. Composites with neutral and acidic LCCs were resistant against alkali while high lability of their delignified carbohydrates against alkali indicates the importance of lignin for formation of cellulose-hemicellulose-lignin framework of plant secondary cell-walls.     

1,3,4,6-Tetrakis(isopropylthio)thieno[3,4-c]thiophenium bis(tetrafluoroborate): X-ray crystal structure of a stable thieno[3,4-c]thiophene dication

The structure of the 1,3,4,6-tetrakis(isopropylthio)thieno[3,4-c]thiophene dication ( 2 ) prepared from 1,3,4,6-tetrakis(isopropylthio)thieno[3,4-c]thiophene ( 1 ) by two-electron oxidation was investigated by X-ray crystallographic analysis. The results revealed that the positive charges are largely delocalized on the two i-PrS-C-C-C-SPr-i moieties.     

Synthesis of S‐Aryl Arenethiosulfonates from N,N‐Di(arenesulfonyl)hydrazines: Reduction of Sulfonyl Chlorides with an Organic Reagent

N,N‐Di(arenesulfonyl)‐N′,N′‐dimethyl‐hydrazines, readily prepared from arenesulfonyl chlorides and N,N‐dimethylhydrazine, were heated at 120°C in chlorobenzene to give S‐aryl arenethiosulfonates, ArSSO₂Ar, in good yields.     

Hydrogen Intercalation in Potassium-C60

Abstract

Solid state ¹H NMR of (KH)₃C₆₀ was measured in the temperature range between ?80 and 60 °C. A doublet spectrum composed of main peak at ?7.0 ppm and shoulder peak at ～0 ppm was observed at room temperature. The negative chemical shift of the main peak indicates that hydrogen in (KH)₃C₆₀ exists as a hydride-like ion. The 60 °C spectrum became singlet at ?5.8 ppm due to motional narrowing.     

Local structural analysis of In-doped Bi2Se3 topological insulator using X-ray fluorescence holography

We performed X-ray fluorescence holography measurements on an In-doped Bi₂Se₃ topological insulator and obtained an in-plane atomic image in the vicinity of In. We found that atomic images at the positions of the first nearest neighbors (NNs) are very weak whereas those at the positions of the second and the third NNs are relatively strong. On the basis of the fact that In is half of the atomic number of Bi, we attributed the origin of this feature to the clustering of the In atoms in the Bi plane. We calculated the intensity of the atomic images and confirmed that the formation of In cluster results in a decrease by 30% in the first NN atomic image intensity. However, the decrease in the magnitude is not enough to explain the experimental results, suggesting another contribution such as the lattice distortions. The effect of the lattice distortion on the atomic image intensity is discussed on the basis of the simulation including the positional fluctuation of In atoms.     

Modeling tip performance for combined STM-luminescence and aperture-SNOM scanning probe: Spatial resolution and collection efficiency

Finite-element simulations of the performance of the tip intended for use in combined aperture-SNOM and the scanning tunneling microscope (STM)-luminescence microscopy are presented. Tip geometry and the role of the opening in the protective metal coating were addressed. It is shown that the tip shape can affect transmittance for the excitation SNOM mode by nearly two orders of magnitude and the metal coating can enhance collection efficiency for the STM-luminescence mode. Desired tip configuration can be chosen based on the interplay between the improving collection efficiency and the deteriorating spatial resolution with increasing opening size.     

Optimizing Charge Switching in Membrane Lytic Peptides for Endosomal Release of Biomacromolecules

Endocytic pathways are practical routes for the intracellular delivery of biomacromolecules. Along with this, effective strategies for endosomal cargo release into the cytosol are desired to achieve successful delivery. Focusing on compositional differences between the cell and endosomal membranes and the pH decrease within endosomes, we designed the lipid-sensitive and pH-responsive endosome-lytic peptide HAad. This peptide contains aminoadipic acid (Aad) residues, which serve as a safety catch for preferential permeabilization of endosomal membranes over cell membranes, and His-to-Ala substitutions enhance the endosomolytic activity. The ability of HAad to destabilize endosomal membranes was supported by model studies using large unilamellar vesicles (LUVs) and by increased intracellular delivery of biomacromolecules (including antibodies) into live cells. Cerebral ventricle injection of Cre recombinase with HAad led to Cre/loxP recombination in a mouse model, thus demonstrating potential applicability of HAad in vivo.
