Ni-catalyzed, ZnCl(2)-assisted domino coupling of enones, alkynes, and alkenes

A Ni(0)/ZnCl(2) system effectively promotes the coupling of enones and alkene-tethered alkynes. In the reaction with 1,6-enynes, the oxidative cyclization of Ni(0) species on enones across the alkyne part followed by ZnCl(2)-promoted cleavage generates alkenylnickel intermediates. Subsequent migratory insertion of the tethered alkene occurs with 5-exo-cyclization. When the resulting sigma-alkylnickel intermediates have beta-hydrogen atoms, the reaction terminates by beta-hydrogen elimination to provide cyclopentane derivatives. On the other hand, a sigma-alkylnickel intermediate that does not have beta-hydrogen atoms undergoes the insertion of a second alkene unit to cause a domino effect via a three-fold C-C bond formation process with and without the cleavage of one C-C bond.     

Homogeneity of a Distance-Regular Graph Which Supports a Spin Model

A spin model is a square matrix that encodes the basic data for a statistical mechanical construction of link invariants due to V.F.R. Jones. Every spin model W is contained in a canonical Bose-Mesner algebra (W). In this paper we study the distance-regular graphs whose Bose-Mesner algebra satisfies W (W). Suppose W has at least three distinct entries. We show that is 1-homogeneous and that the first and the last subconstituents of are strongly regular and distance-regular, respectively.     

Optical probing of spin polarization of electrons in quantum dot edge channels

We propose an optical method for the investigation of the quantum dot edge channels by utilizing circularly polarized photoluminescence in the integer-quantum-Hall-effect regime. One of the advantages of our method is that the degree of the spin-polarization of the electrons in the inner- and outer-compressible liquids can be probed separately. The observed polarized photoluminescence spectra can be explained by the calculated electron spin-dependent optical transition probabilities based on the local-spin density approximation.     

Photoelectrochemical decomposition of water on nanocrystalline BiVO4 film electrodes under visible light

The nanocrystalline BiVO4 film electrode on conducting glass showed an excellent efficiency (IPCE = 29% at 420 nm) for the decomposition of water under visible light.     

Studies on the constituents of Gardenia species. III. New iridoid glycosides from the leaves of Gardenia jasminoides cv. fortuneana Hara

Two new iridoid glycosides, 7 beta,8 beta-epoxy-8 alpha-dihydrogeniposide (1) and 8-epiapodantheroside (2), were isolated, together with six known (3-8) and three artifact (9-11) iridoids, from the leaves of Gardenia jasminoides cv. fortuneana Hara. Their structures were established based on chemical and spectral data.     

Mercuric triflate catalyzed hydroxylative carbocyclization of 1,6-enynes

[reaction: see text] Hg(OTf)(2) exhibits remarkable catalytic activity for the hydroxylative cyclization of 1,6-enynes. The present procedure should involve a sequence of mercuration of a terminal alkyne, carbocyclization, hydration, and protodemercuration that regenerates the catalyst.
