Synthetic approach to natural products by Claisen rearrangement of glyceraldehyde derivatives

For the purpose of organic syntheses of some corynanthe-type indole alkaloids, sesquiterpenes, and steroids, optically active intermediates cyclopentanone 3-allylalcohol, α-methylene-γ-butylo lactones andtrans-hydrindanone-propionic acid, were synthesized from (R)- and (S)-isopropylideneglyceraldehyde derived fromD-mannitol andLascorbic acid, respectively, utilizing Claisen rearrangement as a key reaction. Actually total syntheses of natural alkaloids, (-)-antirhine, (+)-dihydroantirhine and (-) dihydrocorynantheol were accomplished.     

Two New Spermidine Alkaloids from Chisocheton weinlandii

The investigation of the MeOH extract of the leaves of Chisocheton weinlandii Harms (Meliaceae) revealed two new open‐chain spermidine alkaloids, chisitine 1 ( 1 ) and chisitine 2 ( 2 ). Their structures were elucidated by NMR spectroscopy, tandem‐mass spectrometry, and independant syntheses (Scheme 3). Detailed MS/MS fragmentation pathways are discussed for both compounds based on H/D exchange and ¹⁸O‐labeling experiments (Schemes 1 and 2).     

Sesquarterpenes (C35 terpenes) biosynthesized via the cyclization of a linear C35 isoprenoid by a tetraprenyl-β-curcumene synthase and a tetraprenyl-β-curcumene cyclase: identification of a new terpene cyclase

In this study, mono- and pentacyclic C(35) terpenes from Bacillus subtilis were biosynthesized via the cyclization of C(35) isoprenoid using purified enzymes, including the first identified new terpene cyclase that shows no sequence homology to any of the known terpene cyclases. On the basis of these findings, we propose that these C(35) terpenes should be called the new family of "sesquarterpenes."     

Studies on the constituents of Gardenia species. III. New iridoid glycosides from the leaves of Gardenia jasminoides cv. fortuneana Hara

Two new iridoid glycosides, 7 beta,8 beta-epoxy-8 alpha-dihydrogeniposide (1) and 8-epiapodantheroside (2), were isolated, together with six known (3-8) and three artifact (9-11) iridoids, from the leaves of Gardenia jasminoides cv. fortuneana Hara. Their structures were established based on chemical and spectral data.     

Single‐Electron‐Transfer (SET)‐Induced Oxidative Biaryl Coupling by Polyalkoxybenzene‐Derived Diaryliodonium(III) Salts

Metal‐free oxidative C? C coupling by using polyalkoxybenzene‐derived diaryliodonium(III) salts as both the oxidant and aryl source has been developed. These salts can induce single‐electron‐transfer (SET) oxidation to yield electron‐rich arenes and subsequently transfer the polyalkoxyphenyl group into in situ generated aromatic radical cations to produce biaryl products. The reaction is promoted by a Lewis acid that activates the iodonium salts. It has been revealed that the reactivity of the salts under acidic conditions is quite different to their known behavior under basic conditions. The reactivity preference of a series of iodonium salts in the SET oxidation and their ligand transfer abilities have been systematically investigated and the results are summarized in this report.     

Peptidehelicenes in solution and gel: chiral discrimination through interactions between two types of helixes

Helical [5]thiaheterohelicene 5HM, which rapidly interconverts between P and M enantiomers in solution, was connected to helical l-phenylalanine oligomers with an ester linkage to give peptidehelicenes (5Fn, where n: number of bonded phenylalanines). The characteristics of 5F4 and 5F5 with two types of helixes in a molecule were investigated, particularly in comparison with those of 5F1–5F3 with an incomplete coil of a peptide moiety. l-Phenylalanine peptide chains induced a shift in the equilibrium between the P and M helixes of 5HM toward the P side for all the 5Fns examined. The enantiomeric excess (ee) of the P form increased with a decrease in temperature, together with an elongation of the peptide chains. 5F4 and 5F5 in hot solutions of some solvents formed a gel at room temperature, whereas 5F1–5F3 showed no such behavior. In this gel, the stable helical form of the 5HM moiety in 5F4 and 5F5 was observed to be the M form in contrast to that in their solutions.     

Effective photochemical synthesis of an air-stable anthracene-based organic semiconductor from its diketone precursor

A diketone precursor of air-stable bis-2-thienyl-2,6-anthracene was prepared and quantitatively converted to the target acene by photoirradiation of the n-π^∗ absorption both in solution and as a film, in air.     

Tetrabenzoperipentacene: Stable Five‐Electron Donating Ability and a Discrete Triple‐Layered β‐Graphite Form in the Solid State

An oxidative ring‐closure reaction of a tetranaphthylpyrene derivative led to the synthesis of a 56 all‐carbon conjugated tetrabenzoperipentacene. In the single‐crystal X‐ray structure, three molecules make a triple‐layered cluster by π‐stacking, wherein each layer rotates by 120°, and is thus considered a petit β‐graphite. As for the optical properties, the Stokes shift is extremely small (10 cm^?1), thus indicating its remarkably rigid framework. The tetrabenzoperipentacene exhibits reversible five‐electron oxidation waves in cyclic voltammetry, and is regarded as a counterpart to the fullerene C₆₀ in terms of stable multicharge‐storage nanocarbon materials.     

Substituent effects in endocyclic cleavage-recyclization anomerization reaction of pyranosides

Pyranosides with 2,3-trans carbamate or 2,3-trans carbonate groups are anomerized under mild acidic conditions via endocyclic cleavage reaction. In order to understand the nature of the anomerization reaction via the endocyclic cleavage-recyclization process, the substituent effects at various positions were investigated.
