Nitrosation of Phenolic Substrates under Mildly Basic Conditions: Selective Preparation of p-Quinone Monooximes and Their Antiviral Activities

Nitrosation of 3-methoxyphenol and 1-naphthol were examined under both acidic (NaNO(2)-EtCO(2)H-H(2)O) and basic (i-AmNO(2)-K(2)CO(3)-DMF) conditions. Acidic nitrosations afforded ortho-directed products, whereas para-directed nitrosations were observed under basic conditions to yield p-quinone monooximes. The basic para-directed nitrosation was further examined using 15 phenols, two naphthols, and four phenolic heterocyclics. A one-pot operation of the basic nitrosation followed by methylation with dimethyl sulfate gave the corresponding methyl ethers in high yield. Two p-quinone monooximes derived from 3-methoxyphenol and 8-hydroxyquinoline showed a moderate activity against HSV-1, and the latter oxime was also effective against HSV-2. On the other hand, p-quinone monooximes derived from methyl salicylate, 1-naphthol, 7-hydroxy-2-methylbenzo[b]furan, and 8-hydroxycoumarin showed the comparable activity to that of DDI against HIV-1.     

Enantioselective Total Synthesis of Pinnaic Acid and Halichlorine

The enantioselective total synthesis of the bioactive marine natural products pinnaic acid and halichlorine is reported in detail. Our total synthesis features the construction of the five‐membered ring and C9 and C13 stereogenic centers through a palladium‐catalyzed trimethylenemethane [3+2] cyclization; the installation of the nitrogen atom through a regioselective Beckmann rearrangement of a poorly reactive ketone; the stereoselective cyclization of the spiro ring through a four‐step, one‐pot hydrogenation–cyclization; and efficient connection of the sterically hindered lower chain through a reduced‐pressure cross olefin metathesis reaction.     

Local liquid velocity measurements in air-water bubbly flow

Local measurements of axial liquid velocity were performed for vertical upward air-water bubbly flow in a 101.6-mm inner-diameter round pipe by using a laser Doppler anemometer (LDA) and a hot-film anemometer (HFA). The data reduction approaches for both the LDA and HFA are discussed in detail. A threshold scheme with the information of local void fraction and velocity distribution in single-phase flow was applied to the LDA to approximately discriminate liquid velocity signals from those of the bubble interface velocity. Furthermore, a formulation was given to account for the effect of the bubble relative velocity on the liquid in the front and wake regions of the bubbles. For the HFA, an amplitude threshold scheme and a slope criterion were used to extract liquid velocity information. To reduce the measurement uncertainty, the experiments were performed in flow conditions where the area-averaged void fraction was less than 20%. The experimental results showed satisfactory agreement between the liquid volumetric flow rates calculated by area integration of the local liquid velocity and void fraction measurements, and the measured value by a magnetic flow meter. Also, the area-averaged relative velocity between the gas and liquid phases obtained from the current measurements agreed well with previous research.     

Potential formation and high density plasma production on the tandem mirror GAMMA 10

GAMMA 10 experiments have advanced in high density experiments after the last EPS Workshop where we reported high density plasma production by using an ion cyclotron range of frequency heating at a high harmonic frequency and neutral beam injection in the central cell. Recently a high density plasma was obtained with much improved reproducibility than before and without degradation of diamagnetic signal. The high density plasma was attained by adjusting the spacing of the conducting plates installed in the anchor transition regions. Dependencies of particle confinement time, ion energy confinement time and plasma confining potential on plasma density were obtained for the first time in the high density region. Alternating copolymerization of polar vinyl monomers in the presence of zinc chloride. I. Propagation and initiation of the copolymerization of acrylonitrile with styrene copolymer

Copolymerization of acrylonitrile with styrene spontaneously occurred on addition of zinc chloride without addition of any other radical initiator. The composition of the copolymer approached that of strictly alternating copolymer as zinc chloride added to the copolymerization system increased. The significance of the apparent monomer reactivity ratios of this copolymerization system was studied from a kinetic point of view, and it was shown that the monomer sequence distribution is indicated by the apparent monomer reactivity ratios. Further, equations which represent the relation between the apparent monomer reactivity ratios and Q,e values at a given salt concentration were derived. These equations reasonably accounted for the decrease of the apparent monomer reactivity ratios of the copolymerization of acrylonitrile with styrene in the presence of zinc chloride and the behavior of the other acrylonitrile copolymerization systems in the presence of zinc chloride. The initiation step of the spontaneous radical copolymerization of acrylonitrile with styrene in the presence of zinc chloride was explained by a cross-initiation mechanism.     

Phosphonation of arenes with dialkyl phosphites catalyzed by Mn(II)/Co(II)/O2 redox couple

[reaction: see text]. Arylphosphonates were first synthesized through a catalytic phosphonation of various arenes with dialkyl phosphites under the influence of an Mn(OAc)2/Co(OAc)2/O2 redox couple. For instance, the reaction of benzene with diethyl phosphite in the presence of Mn(OAc)2 (5 mol %) and Co(OAc)2 (1 mol %) under a mixed gas of O2 (0.5 atm) and N2 (0.5 atm) at 45 degrees C led to diethyl phenylphosphonate in 81% selectivity at 62% conversion. This is the first successful phosphonation of benzene with dialkyl phosphites through a catalytic radical process.     

AC transport current loss of assembled conductor of HTS tapes

We study experimentally and theoretically the AC transport current loss characteristics of a tape in multiple tapes assembled in single layer and subject to external field produced by transport currents of adjacent tapes. We measured the AC transport current losses of a Bi2223 silver-sheathed tape in a single layer arrangement of three tapes using our newly developed potential leads arrangement to avoid spurious loss components caused by the magnetization in the adjacent tapes. In the paper, the influence of the external AC field produced by adjacent tapes on the loss characteristics is studied based on the experimental results and theoretical analysis.
