A bottlenose dolphin was tested on its ability to echoically discriminate horizontal angular differences between arrays of vertically oriented air-filled PVC rods. The blindfolded dolphin was required to station in a submerged hoop 2 radial m from the stimuli and indicate if an array with two rods (S+) was to the right or the left of a single rod (S-). The angular separation between the two rods (thetaw) was held constant within each experiment while the angle between the S+ and the S-stimuli (thetab) varied to produce angular differences (deltatheta= thetab-thetaw) ranging from 0.25 to 4 degrees. In experiment I, thetaw was maintained at 2 degrees and in experiment II, thetaw was maintained at 4 degrees. Resulting 75% correct thresholds (method of constant stimuli) were 1.5 and 0.7 degrees, respectively. The two main findings of this study are: (1) decreasing the number of targets does not aid in localization, and (2) increasing the space between the rods enhances localization. Taken as a whole, the experiments suggest dolphins have a well-developed ability to resolve spatial information through sonar.  相似文献

This paper deals with the evaluation of decision making units which have multiple inputs and outputs. A new method (CCA/DEA) is developed where the Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) is utilized to provide a full rank scaling for all the units rather than a categorical classification (for efficient and inefficient units) as done by the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The CCA/DEA approach is an attempt to bridge the gap between the frontier approach of DEA and the average tendencies of statistics (econometrics). Nonparametric statistical tests are employed to validate the consistency between the classification from the DEA and the postclassification that was generated by the CCA/DEA.  相似文献

Proposed methods for detecting circulatory system disease include targeting ultrasound contrast agents to inflammatory markers on vascular endothelial cells. For antibody-based therapies, soluble forms of the targeted adhesion proteins of the immunoglobulin superfamily (IgSF) reduce adhesion yet were left unaccounted in prior reports. Microspheres labeled simply with a maximum level of antibodies can reduce the diagnostic sensitivity by adhering to proteins expressed normally at a low level, while sparsely coated particles may be rendered ineffective by circulating soluble forms of the targeted proteins. A new microdevice technique is applied to simultaneously measure the adhesion profile to a series of IgSF-protein-coated surfaces. In this investigation, we quantify the in vitro binding characteristics of 5-μm microspheres to oriented intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) protein-coated surfaces in the presence of human serum at physiological concentrations. Defined regions of a slide were coated with recombinant chimeric Fc-human ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 in variable ratios but constant total concentration. Monoclonal human anti-ICAM-1 or anti-VCAM-1 antibodies in competition with non-binding mouse anti-rabbit antibodies coat the microsphere surface at a constant surface density with variable yet controlled surface activities. Using multiple slide surface IgSF protein and microsphere antibody concentrations, an adhesion profile was developed for the microspheres with and without IgSF proteins from human serum, which demonstrated that exposure to serum reduced microsphere binding, on average, more than 50% compared to the no-serum condition.. The serum effects were limited to antibodies on the microsphere, since binding inhibition was reversed after rinsing serum from the system and fresh antibody-coated microspheres were introduced. This analysis quantifies the binding effects of soluble IgSF proteins from human serum on antibody-based targeted ultrasound detection and drug delivery methods.  相似文献

The crystal structures of three polymorphic phases of rubidium trifluoromethyl sulfonate (RbSO3CF3, rubidium 'triflate') were solved from X-ray powder diffraction data. At room temperature, rubidium triflate crystallizes in the monoclinic space group Cm with lattice parameters of a = 19.9611(5) A, b = 23.4913(7) A, c = 5.1514(2) A, beta = 102.758(2) degrees; Z = 16. At T = 321 K, a first-order phase transition occurs toward a monoclinic phase in space group P2(1) with lattice parameters at T = 344 K of a = 10.3434(5) A, b = 5.8283(3) A, c = 5.1982(3) A, beta = 104.278(6) degrees; Z = 2). At T = 461 K, another phase transition, this time of second order, occurs toward an orthorhombic phase in space group Cmcm with lattice parameters at T = 510 K of a = 5.3069(2) A, b = 20.2423(10) A, c = 5.9479(2) A; Z = 4. As a common feature within all three crystal structures of rubidium triflate, the triflate anions are arranged in double layers with the lipophilic CF3 groups facing each other. The rubidium ions are located between the SO3 groups. The general packing is similar to the packing in cesium triflate. Rubidium triflate can be classified as a solid electrolyte with a specific ionic conductivity of sigma = 9.89 x 10(-9) S/cm at T = 384 K and sigma = 3.84 x 10(-6) S/cm at T = 481 K.  相似文献

The spectral polarization of an ultrashort pulse is fully controlled by a novel pulse shaper design, including three liquid-crystal spatial light modulator arrays at three different orientations. Incorporating backbone flexibility into protein-ligand docking is still a challenging problem. In protein-protein docking, normal mode analysis (NMA) has become increasingly popular as it can be used to describe the collective motions of a biological system, but the question of whether NMA can also be useful in predicting the conformational changes observed upon small-molecule binding has only been addressed in a few case studies. Here, we describe a large-scale study on the applicability of NMA for protein-ligand docking using 433 apo/holo pairs of the Astex data sets. On the basis of sets of the first normal modes from the apo structure, we first generated for each paired holo structure a set of conformations that optimally reproduce its C(α) trace with respect to the underlying normal mode subspace. Using AutoDock, GOLD, and FlexX we then docked the original ligands into these conformations to assess how the docking performance depends on the number of modes used to reproduce the holo structure. The results of our study indicate that, even for such a best-case scenario, the use of normal mode analysis in small-molecule docking is restricted and that a general rule on how many modes to use does not seem to exist or at least is not easy to find.  相似文献

The adsorption behavior of α-octithiophene (8T) on the Au(111) surface as a function of 8T coverage has been studied with low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy as well as with angle-resolved two-photon photoemission and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy. In the sub-monolayer regime 8T adopts a flat-lying adsorption geometry. Upon reaching the monolayer coverage the orientation of 8T molecules changes towards a tilted configuration, with the long molecular axis parallel to the surface plane, facilitating attractive intermolecular π-π-interactions. The photoemission intensity from the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMO and HOMO - 1) possesses a strong dependence on the adsorption geometry due to the direction of the involved transition dipole moment for the respective photoemission process. The change in molecular orientation as a function of coverage in the first molecular layer mirrors the delicate balance between intermolecular and molecule/substrate interactions. Fine tuning of these interactions opens up the possibility to control the molecular structure and accordingly the desirable functionality.  相似文献

Let $\overline {\mathrm {cr}}(n)$ , h(n), and E ??k (n) denote the minimum of $\operatorname {cr}(P)$ , the maximum of h(P), and the minimum of E ??k (P), respectively, over all sets P of n points in general position in the plane. We show that the previously best known lower bound on E ??k (n) is tight for k<?(4n?2)/9? and improve it for all k???(4n?2)/9?. This in turn improves the lower bound on $\overline {\mathrm {cr}}(n)$ from $0.37968\binom{n}{4}+\varTheta (n^{3})$ to $\frac{277}{729}\binom{n}{4}+\varTheta (n^{3})\geq 0.37997\binom{n}{4}+\varTheta (n^{3})$ . We also give the exact values of $\overline {\mathrm {cr}}(n)$ and h(n) for all n??27. Exact values were known only for n??18 and odd n??21 for the crossing number, and for n??14 and odd n??21 for halving lines.  相似文献

Sodium and lithium cobaltates are important materials for thermoelectric and battery applications due to their large thermoelectric power and ability to (de-) intercalate the alkali metal. For these applications, phase pure materials with controlled microstructure are required. We report on the sol?Cgel synthesis of sodium- and lithium-based materials by using acetate precursors. The produced Na2/3CoO2, Li(Ni1/3Mn1/3Co1/3)O2, and Li(Ni1/2Co1/2)O2 powders are phase pure with grain sizes below 1???m. X-ray diffraction and energy-dispersive spectral analyses show that the cation stoichiometry is preserved in the lithium-based compounds. Despite the low temperatures, the sodium content is reduced by 1/3 as compared to the initial value. Chemical phases of the investigated powders are formed in the sol?Cgel route at temperatures typically 100?C200?K lower than those used in the conventional solid-state synthesis of these materials. The suggested sol?Cgel synthesis is a low temperature process suited for production of phase pure and homogeneous materials with volatile cations.  相似文献
