Highly effective direct synthesis of DMC from CH_3OH and CO_2 using novel Cu-Ni/C bimetallic composite catalysts

Novel Cu-Ni/C has been prepared and utilized as an efficient catalyst system in direct synthesis of DMC from CH3OH and CO2.     

Design,synthesis and biological activity of some novel benzimidazole derivatives against Coxsackie virus B_3

A series of novel benzimidazole derivatives was synthesized and their anti-Coxsackie virus B_3(CVB_3) activity was evaluated in VERO cells.Compounds 9 and 10 exhibited better inhibitory activity than those of ribavirin(RBV) with IC_(50) values of 5.30 and 1.06μg/mL,respectively.     

Organic lead compounds in vehicle exhaust

Species-specific measurements of the five tetraalkyllead compounds used in gasoline and their intermediate decomposition products, the tri- and di-alkyllead species, have been made in vehicle exhaust fumes. Under normal engine running conditions 0.3–3% of the lead emitted in exhaust is as an organic compound, but cold, choked engines emit proportionally much larger amounts of alkyllead. Alkyllead is emitted in both the gas and the aerosol phases.     

Study of the responses of a gas chromatography—reduction gas detector system to gaseous hydrocarbons under different conditions

The response of a reduction gas detector (RGD) to C₂-C₆ alkenes, C₂-C₆ alkanes, isoprene and benzene has been investigated using gas chromatography (GC) with a packed column. The RGD is considerably more sensitive to alkenes than is the flame ionization detector. The detection limit of this present GC/RGD system for alkenes is about 0.01 ng. It has much greater sensitivity to alkenes than to alkanes. Its sensitivity increases with increasing HgO bed temperature, but its selectivity towards alkenes decreases at the same time. The selectivity of the RGD may not be significant for much heavier molecules. The sensitivity of the RGD is inversely proportional to the carrier gas flow rate through the HgO bed. The baseline of the system increases significantly with increasing oven temperature.     

Reactions of (Z)-3-aryl-3-chloropropenals with nucleophiles: stereoselective formation of (E)-vinylogous esters, (E)-vinylogous amides, and vinamidinium salts

The highly stereoselective conversions of (Z)-3-aryl-3-chloropropenals to (E)-3-alkoxy-3-arylpropenals, to (E)-3-aryl-3-morphorlinopropenals, and to vinamidinium salts are reported. The stereochemical assignments were based on 2D-NMR experiments.     

Metabolism of chlortetracycline: drug accumulation and excretion in the hen's egg.

Chlortetracycline (CTC) is one of the few antibiotics that can be used without any withdrawal period in chickens laying eggs intended for human consumption. 6-Iso-CTC and 4-epi-6-iso-CTC have recently been identified as the principal metabolites of CTC in eggs. Although not covered by the European Union (EU) maximum residue limit (MRL) for CTC, these compounds, taken together, accumulate in the eggs of birds treated therapeutically with CTC to a mean concentration equivalent to more than twice the EU MRL (200 micrograms kg-1) in eggs. Plateau concentrations in eggs were achieved after approximately 3 d of medication. Following withdrawal of medication, mean egg concentrations of these compounds were maintained for 48 h, before falling below a level equivalent to the MRL after 5 d. Feeds containing typical sub-therapeutic contamination concentrations of CTC did not produce mean concentrations of 6-iso-CTC plus 4-epi-6-iso-CTC, combined, greater than 200 micrograms kg-1. It is not known whether these compounds are formed as a result of metabolism or of chemical degradation. However, analysis of ovules pre-lay showed that all of the CTC present in this matrix was in the form of 6-iso-CTC and 4-epi-6-iso-CTC, and not as the parent drug. Although microbiologically inactive, the toxicological properties of 6-iso-CTC and 4-epi-6-iso-CTC are not known.     

PEG-400 as an efficient reaction medium for the synthesis of 2,4,5-triaryl-1H-imidazoles and 1,2,4,5-tetraaryl-1H-imidazoles

An efficient protocol for the one-pot multicomponent synthesis of various 2,4,5-triaryl- IH-imidazoles and 1,2,4,5-tetraaryl-1H-imidazoles using PEG-400 as reaction medium is described. This method has the advantages of good yields, less pollution and simple reaction conditions.     

Slug initiation and evolution in two-phase horizontal flow

A series of two-phase air–water experiments was carried out in order to study the initiation and the subsequent evolution of hydrodynamic slugs in a horizontal pipeline. Experiments were carried out at atmospheric pressure, 4.0 bar(a) and 9.0 bar(a), and the effects of superficial liquid and gas velocities were investigated. The test section used for these experiments is 37 m in length, with an internal diameter of 0.078 m. To study the interfacial development, measurements of interfacial structures were made at 14 axial locations along the test section, with data acquired at a sampling frequency of 500 Hz. A large number of slugs were initiated within the first 3 m of the test section, with the frequency subsequently reducing towards the fully developed value before the end of the pipe. This reduction in frequency was strongly influenced by the magnitude of the gas and liquid velocities. The frequency of slugging was not strongly affected when the system pressure was changed from 1 atmosphere, to 4.0 and 9.0 bar(a), closely similar values being obtained at the 10 downstream locations. However, higher pressure delayed the onset of slug initiation, with “slug precursors” being formed further downstream as the pressure was increased. The statistical distributions of slug lengths and of the time intervals between slug arrivals were examined in detail and compared to several standard distributions. This showed that slug initiation may be reasonably approximated as an uncorrelated Poisson process with an exponential distribution of arrival times. However, once slugs have developed, there is strong correlation and the arrival time intervals, as well as the lengths, are best represented by the log-normal distribution.
