An application of system identification to flutter testing

It is shown that the equations of motion of an aeroelastic system may be derived from measured response data. The structural and aerodynamic terms are separated by analyzing response measurements at two values of kinetic pressure; the derived equations can then be used to calculate dynamic characteristics of the system at any chosen values of kinetic pressure. Two examples of the application of the analysis to the prediction of flutter characteristics are given.     

Intrinsically thermochromic fluorans

A Suzuki coupling strategy has been employed to access a series of novel fluorans substituted with a phenolic moiety. These fluorans display good thermochromism in methyl stearate and obviate the need for traditional complex formulations containing acidic colour developers.

Renormalization group approach to a p-wave superconducting model

We present in this work an exact renormalization group (RG) treatment of a one-dimensional p-wave superconductor. The model proposed by Kitaev consists of a chain of spinless fermions with a p-wave gap. It is a paradigmatic model of great actual interest since it presents a weak pairing superconducting phase that has Majorana fermions at the ends of the chain. Those are predicted to be useful for quantum computation. The RG allows to obtain the phase diagram of the model and to study the quantum phase transition from the weak to the strong pairing phase. It yields the attractors of these phases and the critical exponents of the weak to strong pairing transition. We show that the weak pairing phase of the model is governed by a chaotic attractor being non-trivial from both its topological and RG properties. In the strong pairing phase the RG flow is towards a conventional strong coupling fixed point. Finally, we propose an alternative way for obtaining p-wave superconductivity in a one-dimensional system without spin–orbit interaction.     

Targeted analysis reveals alteration in pathway in 5p minus individuals

Cri du Chat or 5p minus (5p−) syndrome is characterized by a deletion located on the chromosome 5 short (−p) arm and has an incidence rate of 1 in 50,000 individuals worldwide. This disease manifests in disturbances across a range of systems biochemicals. Therefore, a targeted metabolomics analysis was evaluated in patients with 5p− syndrome to help unravel the biochemical changes that occur in this disease. Urine samples were collected from people of both sexes aged 1–38 years old and analyzed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Student' statistical test, metabolomic pathway analysis and metabolite set enrichment analysis were applied to the data. Alterations of some amino acids and amine biogenics levels were found in Cri du Chat Syndrome individuals. The alteration of most of these metabolites is associated with energy recuperation and glycolysis. In general, we found the catabolism of some metabolic pathways to be affected in 5p− patients.     

Asymmetrically doped one-dimensional trans-polymers

More than 30 years ago [H. Shirakawa, E.J. Louis, A.G. MacDiarmid, C.K. Chiang, A.J. Heeger, J. Chem. Soc. Chem. Comm. 578 (1977); S. Etemad, A.J. Heeger, Ann. Rev. Phys. Chem. 33 (1982) 443] it was discovered that doped trans-polyacetylene (CH)_x, a one-dimensional (1D) conjugated polymer, exhibits electrical conductivity. In this work we show that an asymmetrically doped 1D trans-polymer has non-conventional properties, as compared to symmetrically doped systems. Depending on the level of asymmetry between the chemical potentials of the two involved fermionic species, the polymer can be in a partially or fully spin polarized state. Some possible experimental consequences of doped 1D trans-polymers used as 1D organic polarized conductors are discussed.     

Electrophoresis microchip fabricated by a direct-printing process with end-channel amperometric detection

We describe the development of an electrophoresis microchip fabricated by a direct-printing process, based on lamination of printed polyester films with end-channel amperometric detection. The channel structures are defined by polyester (base and cover) and by a toner layer (walls). The polyester-toner devices presented an electroosmotic flow (EOF) magnitude of approximately 10(-5) cm2 V(-1) s(-1), which is generated by a polymeric mixture of the toner and polyester composition. The microelectrodes used for detection were produced combining this laser-printer technology to compact discs. The performance of this device was evaluated by amperometric detection of iodide and ascorbate. The detection limits found were 500 nmol.L(-1) (135 amol) and 1.8 micromol.L(-1) (486 amol) for iodide and ascorbate, respectively.
