Background and motivation

The structure, composition and mechanics of carotid artery are good indicators of early progressive atherosclerotic lesions. The combination of three imaging modalities (ultrasound, strain rate and photoacoustic imaging) which could provide corroborative information about the named arterial properties could enhance the characterization of intimal xanthoma.

Methods

The experiments were performed using a New Zealand white rabbit model of atherosclerosis. The aorta excised from an atherosclerotic rabbit was scanned ex vivo using the three imaging techniques: (1) ultrasound imaging of the longitudinal section: standard ultrasound B-mode (74 Hz frame rate); (2) strain rate imaging: the artery was flushed with blood and a 1.5 Hz physiologic pulsation was induced, while the ultrasound data were recorded at higher frame rate (296 Hz); (3) photoacoustic imaging: the artery was irradiated with nanosecond pulsed laser light of low fluence in the 1210-1230 nm wavelength range and the photoacoustic data was recorded at 10 Hz frame rate. Post processing algorithms based on cross-correlation and optical absorption variation were implemented to derive strain rate and spectroscopic photoacoustic images, respectively.

Results

Based on the spatio-temporal variation in displacement of different regions within the arterial wall, strain rate imaging reveals differences in tissue mechanical properties. Additionally, spectroscopic photoacoustic imaging can spatially resolve the optical absorption properties of arterial tissue and identify the location of lipid pools.

Conclusions

The study demonstrates that ultrasound, strain rate and photoacoustic imaging can be used to simultaneously evaluate the structure, the mechanics and the composition of atherosclerotic lesions to improve the assessment of plaque vulnerability.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to develop the hydrogeochemical profiling of caves based on the elemental composition of water and silty soil samples and a multivariate statistical analysis. Major and trace elements, including rare earths, were determined in the water and soil samples. The general characteristics of water, anions content, inorganic and organic carbon fractions and nitrogen species (NO3 and NH4+) were also considered. The ANOVA—principal component analysis (PCA) and two-way joining analysis were applied on samples collected from Cloșani Cave, Romania. The ANOVA-PCA revealed that the hydrogeochemical characteristics of Ca2+-HCO3 water facies were described by five factors, the strongest being associated with water-carbonate rock interactions and the occurrence of Ca, Mg and HCO3 (43.4%). Although organic carbon fractions have a lower influence (20.1%) than inorganic ones on water characteristics, they are involved in the chemical processes of nitrogen and of the elements involved in redox processes (Fe, Mn, Cr and Sn). The seasonal variability of water characteristics, especially during the spring, was observed. The variability of silty soil samples was described by four principal components, the strongest influence being attributed to rare earth elements (52.2%). The ANOVA-PCA provided deeper information compared to Gibbs and Piper diagrams and the correlation analysis.  相似文献

Riboflavin under UVA radiation generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) that can induce various changes in biological systems. Under controlled conditions, these processes can be used in some treatments for ocular or dermal diseases. For instance, corneal cross-linking (CXL) treatment of keratoconus involves UVA irradiation combined with riboflavin aiming to induce the formation of new collagen fibrils in cornea. To reduce the damaging effect of ROS formed in the presence of riboflavin and UVA, the CXL treatment is performed with the addition of polysaccharides (dextran). Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide that can be found in the aqueous layer of the tear film. In many cases, keratoconus patients also present dry eye syndrome that can be reduced by the application of topical solutions containing hyaluronic acid. This study presents physico-chemical evidence on the effect of riboflavin on collagen fibril formation revealed by the following methods: differential scanning microcalorimetry, rheology, and STEM images. The collagen used was extracted from calf skin that contains type I collagen similar to that found in the eye. Spin trapping experiments on collagen/hyaluronic acid/riboflavin solutions evidenced the formation of ROS species by electron paramagnetic resonance measurements.  相似文献

The gas-phase reactions of hydrated electrons with carbon dioxide and molecular oxygen were studied by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry. Both CO2 and O2 react efficiently with (H2O)n- because they possess low-lying empty pi* orbitals. The molecular CO2- and O2- anions are concurrently solvated and stabilized by the water ligands to form CO2(-)(H2O)n and O2(-)(H2O)n. Core exchange reactions are also observed, in which CO2(-)(H2O)n is transformed into O2(-)(H2O)n upon collision with O2. This is in agreement with the prediction based on density functional theory calculations that O2(-)(H2O)n clusters are thermodynamically favored with respect to CO2(-)(H2O)n. Electron detachment from the product species is only observed for CO2(-)(H2O)2, in agreement with the calculated electron affinities and solvation energies.  相似文献

Electrical measurements performed on films of bare carbon quantum dots (CQDs) as well as of CQD functionalized with PEG1500N deposited on interdigitated electrodes reveal a significant resistance hysteresis. At room temperature, both systems present a stable memory effect after a large number of cycles, fact associated with the removal of shallow trapping states after the thermal treatment of bare and passivated CQDs films. Temperature analysis of transport properties shows that CQDs functionalized with PEG1500N present a stable hysteresis as the temperature increases, in contrast to the hysteresis of bare CQD films, which disappears at high temperatures. Several transport mechanisms responsible for the electrical behavior of these systems were analyzed and the role of PEG1500N as a passivation shell was discussed.  相似文献

Non-irradiated and gamma irradiated monohydrated (l Asn·H2O) and anhydrous (l Asn) asparagines, in solid state, were studied by means of DSC. The samples were irradiated at room temperature with gamma radiations using a 137Cs source. The exposure doses ranged between 1 and 10 kGy. All samples were scanned in sealed pans, from room temperature to a temperature beyond the melting point. The DSC scans of l Asn·H2O samples in sealed crucibles revealed the presence of two dehydration processes and one of decomposition and only decomposition in the case of l Asn. The influence of gamma irradiation consisted in decreasing the enthalpy of dehydration and of decomposition. A decomposition mechanism is proposed.  相似文献

Colorectal cancer is one of the most frequently diagnosed forms of cancer, and the therapeutic solutions are frequently aggressive requiring improvements. Essential oils (EOs) are secondary metabolites of aromatic plants with important pharmacological properties that proved to be beneficial in multiple pathologies including cancer. Mentha piperita L. (M_EO) and Rosmarinus officinalis L. (R_EO) essential oils are well-known for their biological effects (antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and cytotoxic in different cancer cells), but their potential as complementary treatment in colorectal cancer is underexplored. The aim of the present study was to investigate the M_EO and R_EO in terms of chemical composition, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and cytotoxic effects in a colorectal cancer cell line—HCT 116. The gas-chromatographic analysis revealed menthone and menthol, and eucalyptol, α-pinene and L-camphor as major compounds in M_EO and R_EO respectively. M_EO exhibited potent antimicrobial activity, moderate antioxidant activity and a low cytotoxic effect in HCT 116 cells. R_EO presented a significant cytotoxicity in colorectal cancer cells and a low antimicrobial effect. The cytotoxic effect on non-cancerous cell line HaCaT was not significant for both essential oils. These results may provide an experimental basis for further research concerning the potential use of M_EO and R_EO for anticancer treatment.  相似文献

Dye‐sensitized solar cells based on a mesoporous ZnO substrate were sensitized with the indoline derivatives DN91, DN216 and DN285. The chromophore is the same for each of these dyes. They differ from each other in the length of an alkyl chain, which provides a second anchor to the ZnO surface and prolongs cell lifetime. Ultrafast transient absorption measurements reveal a correlation between the length of the alkyl chain and the fastest electron‐injection process. The depopulation of the excited state and the associated emergence of the oxidized molecules are dominant spectral features in the transient absorption of the dyes with shorter alkyl chains. A slower picosecond‐scale decay proceeds at constant rate for all three derivatives and is assigned to electron transfer into the trap states of ZnO. All assignments are in good agreement with a higher quantum efficiency of charge injection leading to higher short‐circuit currents Jsc for dyes with shorter alkyl chains.  相似文献
