Enhancement of macroscopic quantum tunneling by Landau-Zener transitions

Motivated by recent realizations of qubits with a readout by macroscopic quantum tunneling in a Josephson junction, we study the problem of barrier penetration in the presence of coupling to a spin-1 / 2 system. It is shown that, when the diabatic potentials for fixed spin intersect in the barrier region, Landau-Zener transitions lead to an enhancement of the tunneling rate. The effect of these spin flips in imaginary time is in qualitative agreement with experimental observations.     

Reversal of diastereoselectivities in intra- and intermolecular reactions of 2-adamantanylidenes primarily caused by electron-donating and electron- withdrawing substituents on C5

[reaction: see text] A reversal of diastereoselectivity was observed for novel 5-(trimethylsilyl)adamantan-2-ylidene (1c) with regard to 5-hydroxyadamantan-2-ylidene (1a). Ostensibly in intermolecular reactions, 5-substituted 2-adamantanylidenes (1) are sterically unbiased. However, inductive effects originating from the pendant group bend the divalent carbon bridge of 1 either toward (ERG's, e.g., -Si(CH(3))(3)) or away from (EWG's, e.g., -OH) the gamma-position. Hence, the more exposed side is more susceptible to intermolecular reaction and the other side concomitantly undergoes intramolecular 1,3-CH insertions more readily.     

Attempts to Exchange Iron into H-Y and H-ZSM-5 Zeolites by in situ Formed Chloride-Containing Mobile Species

Three variants of solid-state ion exchange were studied. Iron exchange was found to proceed in the first case, in theFeCl₂+NH₄ZSM-5 FeZSM-5 + NH₄Cl process, even at low exchange capacity (Si/Al = 25).The second, Fe₂O₃ (hematite) + HZ direct reaction does not result in any noticeable interaction for eitherZ = Y or ZSM-5. This process can significantly be promoted by introducing CCl₄ vapor via forming chlorine-containingmobile species. However, the structure of the Y zeolite largely collapses during this treatment, whereas the crystalline state of ZSM-5is preserved.
