Organometallic photonucleases: synthesis and DNA-cleavage studies of cyclopentadienyl metal-substituted dendrimers designed to increase double-strand scission

[reaction: see text] A series of metal complex-substituted polyamine dendrimers have been synthesized and examined for their ability to cleave plasmid DNA in a double-stranded manner. While photolysis of the dimetallic spermine derivative and the tetrametallic DAB-Am-4 complex led to double-strand scission, in the larger DAB-Am-8 and DAB-Am-16 systems, DNA aggregation/precipitation was the predominant competing process observed.     

On extensions of the Brunn-Minkowski and Prékopa-Leindler theorems,including inequalities for log concave functions,and with an application to the diffusion equation

We extend the Prékopa-Leindler theorem to other types of convex combinations of two positive functions and we strengthen the Prékopa-Leindler and Brunn-Minkowski theorems by introducing the notion of essential addition. Our proof of the Prékopa-Leindler theorem is simpler than the original one. We sharpen the inequality that the marginal of a log concave function is log concave, and we prove various moment inequalities for such functions. Finally, we use these results to derive inequalities for the fundamental solution of the diffusion equation with a convex potential.     

Synthesis of novel iodo derived bicalutamide analogs

A series of optically active nonsteroidal selective androgen receptor modulators with structures analogous to bicalutamide was prepared by replacing the trifluoromethyl group with iodine and the sulfonyl linker by oxygen.     

A note on nonstable monomorphisms¶of vector bundles

In this paper we consider the question of the existence of a nonstable vector bundle monomorphism u:α→β over a closed, connected and smooth manifold M, when dimension of α= 3, dimension of β= dimension of M=n≡ 0(4). The singularity method provides the full obstruction to this problem and under some homological hypothesis we can compute it in terms of well known invariants. Received: 31 May 1999

Combination of Raman, Infrared, and X-Ray Energy-Dispersion Spectroscopies and X-Ray Diffraction to Study a Fossilization Process

X-ray diffraction was combined with X-ray energy-dispersion, Fourier-transform infrared, and Raman spectroscopies to study the fossilization of a Cretaceous specimen of the plant Brachyphyllum castilhoi, a fossil from the Ipubi Formation, in the Araripe Sedimentary Basin, Northeastern Brazil. Among the possible fossilization processes, which could involve pyrite, silicon oxide, calcium oxide, or other minerals, we were able to single out pyritization as the central mechanism producing the fossil, more than 100 million years ago. In addition to expanding the knowledge of the Ipubi Formation, this study shows that, when combined with other experimental techniques, Raman spectroscopy is a valuable tool at the paleontologist’s disposal.     

Evaluation and evidence of natural gangliosides with two unsaturated bonds in the ceramide structure obtained by a combination of MALDI-MS and NMR spectroscopy

Gangliosides are membrane-associated glycosphingolipids. N-Acetyl GM3 and N-glycolyl GM3 are two tumor-associated antigens expressed in cancer tissues such as melanoma and mammalian cancer. In order to use these antigens in GM3-based vaccines for patients with early stage cancer, the synthetic version is recommended to avoid the risk of animal virus transmission from the source. However, the isolation of natural gangliosides is of comparative value for the structural characterization. The structures of N-acetyl and N-glycolyl GM3 extracted from dog and horse erythrocytes were evaluated by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance techniques; additionally, the natural N-acetyl ganglioside was compared to a synthetic one. In addition to the main compound with C24:0 fatty acid chain, a minor component with an additional unsaturation in the ceramide chain was detected, in both the dog and the horse gangliosides. This paper shows spectroscopic evidence of the aforementioned compounds.
