Synthesis of γ-lactones from alkenes employing p-methoxybenzyl chloride as CH2---CO2 equivalent

The ZnCl₂ catalyzed reaction of p-methoxybenzyl chloride with alkenes yields the 1:1 addition products 3, which are converted into the γ-lactones 4 via Ru(VIII) catalyzed oxidative degradation of the aromatic ring.     

Approximation of titration curves and other sigmoidal functions by proportionally spaced cubic B-splines

Proportionally spaced cubicB-splines are an appropriate function system for the approximation of titration curves and other sigmoidal functions. They give a smooth weighted leastsquares fit without instability problems. The degree of smoothing depends only on the number of spline function which can be chosen by the user. The equivalence points of titration curves can be estimated with high accuracy from the zeros of the second derivative.The method gives good approximation curves even in the case of empty data regions, i. e. there are no artefacts in subranges where no data points exist. The routine has been tested successfully with large series of simulated and experimental data.     

A validated gas chromatographic method for the evaluation of enzymatic enantioselectivity in kinetic resolution applications

An enantioselective gas chromatography (GC) method has been developed and validated for determination of the enantiomers of citronellol in kinetic resolution experiments. S-(-)-beta-Citronellol is a precursor of rose oxide. After solid-phase extraction (SPE) with ethyl acetate, the enantiomers of R-(+)-beta-citronellol and S-(-)-beta-citronellol and their corresponding acetate- and butyrate esters were separated through enantioselective GC respectively. The method was validated and found to be reproducible, specific, accurate, and precise. Analyte recoveries and detection limits were also determined. The applicability of this method was shown in a kinetic resolution experiment using lipase A of Bacillus subtilis.     

[2+2]-cycloadditions of alkenes with the triphenylallenyl cation

The triphenylallenyl cation (8), generated from triphenylpropynol (7) and FSO₃H, reacts with alkenes to give the allyl cations 12, which may be deprotonated to yield the methyleneccylobutenes 14. Alternatively, 12 can be converted into the 2-vinyl-indenes 13 $\text{via}$ two subsequent electrocyclic reactions.     

Square-planar coordinated polyanions of palladium, platinum, and gold stannaborate [SnB11H11]2- coordination chemistry

The tetrasubstituted polyanions of platinum, palladium, and gold [M(SnB(11)H(11))(4)](x-) (x=6, M=Pd, Pt; x=5, M=Au) have been prepared and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, IR, Raman, (11)B, and (119)Sn heteronuclear NMR spectroscopy. In the case of the platinum derivative [Bu(3)MeN](6)[Pt(SnB(11)H(11))(4)] (2) (119)Sn M?ssbauer spectroscopy has been carried out. The isolated salts are stable towards moisture and air and the complexes 2 and 3 were treated with 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane (dppp) to give the respective substitution products [Bu(3)MeN](2)[(dppp)M(SnB(11)H(11))(2)] (M=Pd, Pt).     

New SbS2 strings in the BaSb2S4 structure

The new compound BaSb₂S₄ crystallizes in the monoclinic system (space group: $\text{P2}{}_1\text{c}$, No. 14) with a = 8.985(2) Å, b = 8.203(3) Å, c = 20.602(5) Å, β = 101.36(3)°. SbS₃ ψ tetrahedra and ψ-trigonal SbS₄ bipyramids are connected by common corners and edgers to infinite strings. These are arraged cross-wise in sheets perpendicular to the c axis.     

Markierungsexperimente zur fragmentierung von 1,2,3-thiadiazolen

The generation of thiirenes in the thermal and photochemical nitrogen elimination of 1,2,3-thiadiazoles is discussed in relation to oxirene formation. Isotope labelling experiments were performed with 4-phenyl-[4-¹³C]-1,2,3-thiadiazole ( 7 ) as the substrate.     

Über die Carotinoide Flavoxanthin und Chrysanthemaxanthin: 1H-NMR.-, 13C-NMR.- und Massen-Spektren und absolute Konfiguration. (Kritische Überprüfung veröffentlichter chemischer und physikalischer Daten)

On the Carotenoids Flavoxanthin and Chrysanthemaxanthin: ¹H-NMR., ¹³C-NMR. and Mass Spectra, Absolute Configuration, Survey of Published Data Very pure flavoxanthin ( 1 ) and chrysanthemaxanthin ( 2 ) have been reisolated from flower heads of Taraxacum officinale. Both compounds were characterized by chromatographic, chemical and chiroptical data and extensive NMR. measurements. Examination of many published data on 1 and 2 led to the conclusion that flavoxanthin has often been mistaken for chrysanthemaxanthin and vice versa. Chemical degradation of 1 and 2 to (?)-loliolide ( 5 ) coupled with NMR. evidence (ASIS, spin-decoupling, NOE) allowed the assignment of the absolute configurations of 1 and 2 . Thus (+)-flavoxanthin is (3S,5R,8R, 3′R,6′R)-5, 8-epoxy-5, 8-dihydro-β, ε-carotene-3, 3′-diol and (+)-chrysanthemaxanthin its C(8)-epimer.
