Comments on “locality,Bell's theorem,and quantum mechanics”

Two different ideas of locality are described. Both are due essentially to einstein. Quantum theory is compatible with the first but not the second. The problems encountered in the article cited in the title arise from trying to use only the first idea of locality, whereas Bell's-theorem considerations pertain to the second.     

Decay of the 21/2− isomer in211Bi and structure of thevg 9 2/2 πh 9/2 levels

Gamma rays and conversion electrons have been measured in²¹¹Bi populated by the²⁰⁹Bi(t,p) reaction, and the near yrast levels were observed up to 21/2^?. The 21/2^? state is isomeric withT _1/2=70(5) ns. No alpha decaying isomer was found in²¹¹Bi. ObservedM1 transitions reveal mixing of the²¹⁰Pb parent states in the levels of²¹¹Bi. The levels and transitions are well reproduced by the shell model with experimental matrix elements and pure configurations.     

Evidence for kinetic and oxidative stabilization of Rh on Mo-promoted Rh/Al2O3

Carbon monoxide hydrogenation studies on silica- and alumina-supported Rh catalysts conducted in our laboratories as well as those reported in the literature suggest that the addition of early transition-metal oxides to the catalyst surface exerts a promotional influence on active Rh centers. This promotion leads to enhanced oxygenate selectivity. Explanations of the promotional influence of the early transition-metal oxides fall into three categories: (i) kinetic stabilization of small Rh aggregates, (ii) wetting and spreading of the transition-metal oxide, leading to decoration of the surface of Rh crystallites, and (iii) oxidative stabilization of Rh aggregates, altering Rh interactions with sub-carbonyls during reaction. Characterization of the Rh---Mo/γ-Al₂O₃ system provides supporting evidence for both kinetic stabilization and oxidative stabilization of Rh aggregates and suggests that these processes contribute to the enhanced oxygenate selectivity of these materials. Hydrogen and carbon monoxide chemisorption results provide evidence for highly dispersed and oxidatively stabilized Rh aggregates. Even after extended on-stream testing (> 10 h), where metal aggregation is unavoidable, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, associated energy dispersive spectroscopy, and the use of fast-Fourier transform post-processing to produce optical diffractograms highlight differences in the metal-aggregate morphology.     

A covariant kinetic equation for a self-gravitating system

Recently, Israel and Kandrup have developed a new, manifestly covariant approach to non-equilibrium statistical mechanics in classical general relativity. One by-product of that approach has been the formulation of an approximate kinetic equation for the evolution of a self-gravitating system, valid in an “impulse” or “weak coupling” approximation in the limit that radiative effects may be neglected. This paper exploits the theory of random functions to present a much simpler derivation of that approximate kinetic equation.     

Splitting off tori and the evaluation subgroup of the fundamental group

Given a spaceX what is the largest torusT ⁿ such thatX is homotopy equivalent toY×T ⁿ We find the answer depends on a simple property of the evaluation subgroup of the fundamental group,G ₁(X). As corollaries we have the Splitting theorem of Conner and Raymond and the fact that the dimension ofX must be greater than the rank ofG ₁(X).     

Some cubic curves associated with a triangle

There are many interesting cubic curves which arise from the geometry of the triangle. In particular, those which are invariant under the operation of isogonal conjugacy have attracted much attention, and a class of these is here investigated by a variety of methods.     

The ν2 band of 15NH3

High-resolution Fourier transform sepctra of the ν₂ band of ¹⁵NH₃ have been recorded in the region 725–1250 cm^?1 with a precision better than 0.0003 cm^?1. A simultaneous weighted least-squares analysis of these data, together with previously published data, has been carried out, to yield molecular parameters which fit the data within the limits of their experimental accuracies.
