Spectral properties of operators of the theory of harmonic potential

We classify the points of the spectrum of the operatorsB andB ^* of the theory of harmonic potential on a smooth closed surfaceS ³. These operators give the direct value onS of the normal derivative of the simple layer potential and the double layer potential. We show that zero can belong to the point spectrum of both operators inL ₂ (S). We prove that the half-interval [–2, 2) is densely filled by spectrum points of the operators for a varying surface; this is a generalization of the classical result of Plemelj. Galloyl-Derived Orthoquinones as Reactive Partners in Nucleophilic Additions and Diels-Alder Dimerizations: A Novel Route to the Dehydrodigalloyl Linker Unit of Agrimoniin-Type Ellagitannins

Orthochloranil-mediated oxidation of galloyl monoethers furnishes the derived orthoquinones in excellent yield. These reactive electrophiles participate in a variety of nucleophilic addition reactions with heteroatomic and carbanionic partners. In addition, Lewis acid-mediated dimerization of the orthoquinones provides an efficient route to dehydrodigalloyl-type diaryl ether units characteristic of several ellagitannin natural products. The implications for ellagitannin biosynthesis and gallotannin-protein covalent attachment are discussed.     

InGaAs/GaAs multiple-quantum-well modulators and switches

The design, fabrication and characterization of electrooptical modulators and switches based on pseudomorphic InGaAs/GaAs multiple-quantum-well (MQW) structures is presented. The absorption and refractive index changes (, n) of In_0.2Ga_0.8As/GaAs MQW structures due to the quantum-confined Stark effect are examined in detail. The figures of merit /₀ and n/₀ give information on the design of modulation and switching devices. Based on these results, we develop two types of efficient and high-speed modulators, vertical and waveguide modulators, and for the first time an InGaAs/GaAs intersectional X-type switch. Recent experimental results for each device are presented.     

Enantiospecific synthesis of the antituberculosis marine sponge metabolite (+)-puupehenone. The arenol oxidative activation route

[formula: see text] The total synthesis of the marine sesquiterpene quinone (+)-puupehenone, a promising new antituberculosis agent, was achieved in 10 steps starting from commercially available (+)-sclareolide. The key feature of this synthesis is the construction of the heterocycle via an intramolecular attack of the terpenoid-derived C-8 oxygen function onto an oxidatively activated 1,2-dihydroxyphenyl unit.     

Development of a tandem cyclization mediated by samarium(II) iodide: sequential intramolecular conjugate addition/nucleophilic acyl substitution

The development of a one-pot tandem intramolecular conjugate addition/nucleophilic acyl substitution using samarium(II) iodide is reported. The reaction relies on the reagent’s unique ability to mediate both radical and anionic pathways, which are likely integral to the mechanism of this transformation. The tricyclic hemiacetal product was formed in good yield, with excellent diastereoselectivity, and its structure was verified by X-ray crystallographic analysis.     

Thermal degradation of poly(vinyl chloride): effect of oxygen on the thermal degradation of poly(vinyl chloride)

On the basis of the simultaneously measured free radical generation and HCl evolution a mechanism accounting for the effect of the oxygen on the degradation of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) is proposed. The mechanism is based on the reaction of oxygen with radicals generated in PVC to form unstable peroxy radicals. In addition, it is proposed that oxygen reacts directly with conjugated polyenes to form peroxy linkage.     

Electronic structure of some mesoscopic systems: II. Electronic composites

We study the electronic properties of a mesoscopic system composed of an array of straight, infinite rods made of an isotropic medium and embedded in a regular way in an isotropic background. Such a composite system has two-dimensional periodicity in the plane perpendicular to the rods. Using a Fourier series expansion, the corresponding Schrödinger equation is solved within the effective-mass approximation. The electronic band structure is computed for the wave vector in the transverse plane, and is illustrated by dispersion curves along the principal directions of the two-dimensional Brillouin zone as well as by the histograms of the density of states. The main result is the appearance of absolute energy gaps in the two-dimensional band structure.     

Interdependence of redox state,hydrogen bonding,anion recognition and charge partition in crystals of (EDT-TTF-CONHMe)6 [Re6Se8(CN)6] (CH3CN)2(CH2Cl2)2

Neutral pi-conjugated molecules and their radical cations co-exist in [(EDT-TTF-CONHMe+*)4(EDT-TTF-CONHMe0)2] [Re6Se8(CN)6]4- (CH3CN)2(CH2Cl2)2 whose crystal structure reveals that, upon one-electron oxidation, an activation of the N-H and C-H hydrogen bond donor ability is coupled to a deactivation of the hydrogen bond acceptor character of the carbonyl oxygen atom: this is expressed in the supramolecular hydrogen bond pattern and, ultimately, into charge localisation and partition in the solid state.
