Protective Effect of Ferulic Acid against Hydrogen Peroxide Induced Apoptosis in PC12 Cells

Ferulic Acid (FA) is a highly abundant phenolic phytochemical which is present in plant tissues. FA has biological effects on physiological and pathological processes due to its anti-apoptotic and anti-oxidative properties, however, the detailed mechanism(s) of function is poorly understood. We have identified FA as a molecule that inhibits apoptosis induced by hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) or actinomycin D (ActD) in rat pheochromocytoma, PC12 cell. We also found that FA reduces H₂O₂-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in PC12 cell, thereby acting as an anti-oxidant. Then, we analyzed FA-mediated signaling responses in rat pheochromocytoma, PC12 cells using antibody arrays for phosphokinase and apoptosis related proteins. This FA signaling pathway in PC12 cells includes inactivation of pro-apoptotic proteins, SMAC/Diablo and Bad. In addition, FA attenuates the cell injury by H₂O₂ through the inhibition of phosphorylation of the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK). Importantly, we find that FA restores expression levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a key neuroprotective effector, in H₂O₂-treated PC12 cells. As a possible mechanism, FA increases BDNF by regulating microRNA-10b expression following H₂O₂ stimulation. Taken together, FA has broad biological effects as a neuroprotective modulator to regulate the expression of phosphokinases, apoptosis-related proteins and microRNAs against oxidative stress in PC12 cells.     

Pd- and Cu-catalyzed C–H arylation of indazoles

The palladium- and copper-catalyzed C–H arylation reactions of 1H- and 2H-indazoles with haloarenes are described. A PdCl₂/phen/Ag₂CO₃/K₃PO₄ catalytic system is effective for the C–H arylation of 1H- and 2H-indazoles with haloarenes, whereas a less expensive CuI/phen/LiOt-Bu catalytic system is applicable to the C–H coupling of substituted 2H-indazoles and iodoarenes. The utility of newly developed catalyst was demonstrated in the rapid synthesis of YC-1 (an antitumor agent) and YD-3 (platelet anti-aggregating agent). These new reactions represent important direct functionalization tools of indazoles, well-known bioisosteres of pharmaceutically important indole core.     

The bicyclic n,n'-diacylaminal: a new motif for molecular self-assembly

A cage-shaped N,N'-diacylaminal crystallizes from some aromatic solvents as "supramolecular chair cyclohexanes", squat cylindrical hexamers with approximate D3d symmetry containing two arene molecules, and from other aromatic and nonaromatic solvents as infinite tapes. A homologous diacylaminal crystallizes only as an infinite tape. The hexamers represent the first examples of cyclic hexamers held together by %@mt;sys@%%@bold@%R%@rsf@%%@sx@%2%@be@%2%@sxx@%%@fn;(;vis;full;auto@%8%@fnx;);vis;full@%-type%@mx@% hydrogen bonds in which the hydrogen-bonded atoms are not coplanar. The diacylaminal represents a new supramolecular synthon, one perhaps more suited to the design of three-dimensional architectures.     

Alternate stranded triplex formation of chimeric DNA composed of tandem alpha- and beta-anomeric strands

A chimeric oligoDNA composed of a natural beta-anomeric oligonucleotide portion and an unnatural alpha-anomeric oligonucleotide portion forms an alternate stranded triplex possessing enhanced thermal stability compared to the triplexes composed of the parental oligomers.     

Naturalness bounds on dipole moments from new physics

Assuming naturalness that the quantum corrections to the mass should not exceed the order of the observed mass, we derive and apply model-independent bounds on the anomalous magnetic moments and electric dipole moments of leptons and quarks due to new physics.     

On the random binary Ising system with a transverse field

The transition temperature and paramagnetic susceptibility in the random binary Ising model with a transverse field are obtained. The system is composed of ferro- and antiferromagnetic spins. It is found that ferro- and antiferromagnetic states coexist in some cases.
