Ferromagnetic NiII-GdIII interactions in complexes with NiGd, NiGdNi, and NiGdGdNi cores supported by tripodal ligands

Dinuclear [(NiL)Gd(hfac)(2)(EtOH)](H(3)L = 1,1,1-tris(N-salicylideneaminomethyl)ethane, Hhfac = hexafluoroacetylacetone), trinuclear [(NiL)(2)Gd(NO(3))], and tetranuclear [(NiL)Gd(CH(3)CO(2))(2)(MeOH)](2) complexes, were prepared by treating [Ni(HL)] with [Gd(hfac)(3)(H(2)O)(2)], Gd(NO(3))(3).6H(2)O, and Gd(CH(3)CO(2))(3).4H(2)O, respectively, in the presence of Et(3)N. All the complexes show that ferromagnetic interactions occur between the Ni(II) and Gd(III) ions.     

KINETICS AND MECHANISM OF PHOTOCYCLOADDITION OF DEOXYURIDINES TO 2,3-DIMETHYL-2-BUTENE

The mechanism of photocycloaddition of 2′-deoxyuridine (1a) and thymidine (1b) to 2,3-dimethyl-2-butene (Bu) in acetonitrile by UV irradiation has been studied. The reciprocal quantum yield for the cycloaddition increased linearly with reciprocal concentrations of Bu in acetonitrile to give limiting quantum yields at infinite concentration of Bu as 0.030 and 0.0096 for 1a and 1b , respectively. This shows that the cycloaddition proceeds in a two-step mechanism between the triplet state of 1 and Bu through biradical intermediates. Addition of cis-1,3-pentadiene quenched the reaction obeying the Stern–Volmer equation. The above quenching experiments and laser transient spectroscopy revealed that the triplet state of 1a reacts with Bu with much larger rate constant (1.3–1.6 × 10⁹ M^?1 s^?1) than that of 1b (4–5 × 10⁷ M^?1 s^?1) reflecting larger steric hindrance exerted in the reaction of 1b than that of 1a .     

Complex diversity in Ligularia kanaitzensis

Two samples of Ligularia kanaitzensis collected in the Shizhongshan Mountain region of Yunnan Province, as well as one sample collected in Sichuan Province, were analyzed with regard to root constituents and neutral DNA sequences. The two Shizhongshan samples were found to be different from each other and from other samples analyzed previously, indicating that the intra-specific diversity in the species was highly complex.     

MNBA-mediated β-lactone formation: mechanistic studies and application for the asymmetric total synthesis of tetrahydrolipstatin

Various β-lactones were prepared from β-hydroxycarboxylic acids by intramolecular dehydration condensation using MNBA, an effective coupling reagent, along with a nucleophilic catalyst. The transition state that provides the desired 4-membered ring model system is disclosed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and the structural features of the transition form are discussed. This method was successfully applied to the asymmetric total synthesis of tetrahydrolipstatin (THL), an antiobestic drug used in clinical treatment to inhibit the activity of pancreatic lipase.     

Plutonium-244 dating

Re-calculation of the²⁴⁴Pu ages of lunar rocks 10057 and 12013 indicates that, while the former started to retain its xenon (4,189 _?74 ⁺⁴⁵ ) million years ago, the latter was formed at a much later time, after the extinct nuclide²⁴⁴Pu had essentially decayed away.     

Plutonium-244 fission xenon in carbonaceous inclusions of primitive meteorites

A total of 13 samples of diamond separates studied so far, all contain excess ²⁴⁴Pu fission xenon. On the other hand, none of the SiC separates contains excess ²⁴⁴Pu fission xenon, while 5 out of 10 samples of graphite separates studied so far contain excess ²⁴⁴Pu fission xenon.     

Adenopeptin, a new apoptosis inducer in transformed cells from Chrysosporium sp.

A new antitumor antibiotic, adenopeptin (1), was isolated from the culture broth of Chrysosporium sp. PF1201. The planar structure, which includes a tridecapeptide and a hexahydropyrrolo[1,2-a]pyrimidinium, was elucidated by mass spectrometric and NMR experiments. Adenopeptin (1) induced apoptotic cell death in cells transformed with the adenovirus oncogenes.     

Synthesis and spectroscopic analysis of tetraphenylporphyrinatoantimony(V) complexes linked to boron-dipyrrin chromophore on axial ligands

Tetraphenylporphyrinatoantimony(V) complexes, linked to boron-dipyrrin chromophores on axial ligands, were synthesized. The fluorescence spectra of 1a, 1b and 1c (3-[4-(N,N′-difluorobornyl-5-dipyrrinyl)phenyl]propoxo(methoxo)antimony(V) tetraphenylporphyrin bromide (1a); 6-[4-(N,N′-difluorobornyl-5-dipyrrinyl)phenyl]hexyloxo(methoxo)antimony(V) tetraphenylporphyrin bromide (1b); bis{3-[4-(N,N′-difluorobornyl-5-dipyrrinyl)phenyl]propoxo}antimony(V) tetraphenylporphyrin bromide (1c)) were analyzed under the excitations of N,N′-difluorobornyl-5-dipyrrinylphenyl (Bdpy) and tetraphenylporphyrinatoantimony(V) (Sb(TPP)) chromophores. Under the irradiation of Bdpy chromophore, the excitation energy was transferred from Bdpy chromophore to the Sb(TPP) moiety at 0.13–0.40 of the quantum yields, even in a polar solvent. On the other hand, the emission of Sb(TPP) chromophores was quenched by Bdpy chromophores at rate constants of 10⁸–10⁹ s⁻¹, independent of on the solvent polarity. Under the excitation of the Bdpy chromophore of 1d (3-[4-(N,N′-difluorobornyl-5-dipyrrinyl)phenyl]propoxo(phenyloxo)antimony(V) tetraphenylporphyrin bromide) involving both the Bdpy and the phenoxy chromophores on the axial ligands, the excited singlet state of the Sb(TPP) chromophore generated by the energy transfer from the Bdpy chromophore was quenched by the phenoxy ligand via non-radiative processes involving electron transfer. However, rapid back electron-transfer may occur because no absorption of the anion radical of Sb(TPP) was observed by nanosecond laser photolysis.
