We show that molecules with a moderate permanent dipole moment can be oriented with combined electrostatic and pulsed, nonresonant laser fields. Carbonyl sulfide (OCS) molecules are used as a sample. The degree of orientation can be increased by increasing the peak intensity of the laser field and the magnitude of electrostatic field or by decreasing the initial rotational temperature of the molecules.Received: 16 January 2003, Published online: 24 April 2003PACS:

Visualizing the elemental distributions of cells and tissues is of growing importance in biology and medical science because such data deepen our understanding of the behavior of metal‐binding proteins and ions. Elemental mapping by X‐ray fluorescence analysis with a hard X‐ray nanobeam is very well suited for this purpose owing to its high sensitivity and high resolution. Using this technique, samples must be prepared without artifacts that are caused by treatments such as chemical fixation and staining procedures. In many studies of elemental mapping, sample preparation is not explicitly considered. To overcome this deficiency, we developed a cryo‐scanning X‐ray fluorescence microscope and installed it in the second experimental hutch of BL29XUL of SPring‐8. We used it to observe frozen‐hydrated cells that had been fixed by a quick‐freezing technique to preserve elemental data of the living state at an X‐ray energy of 11.5 keV. The distributions of K, Ca, Fe, Cu and Zn were successfully visualized. Application of high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) treatment to food processing is expected as a non-thermal fermentation regulation technology that supresses over fermentation. However, the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae used for Japanese rice wine (sake) brewing shows high tolerance to HHP. Therefore, we aimed to generate pressure-sensitive (piezosensitive) sake yeast strains by mating sake with piezosensitive yeast strains to establish an HHP fermentation regulation technology and extend the shelf life of fermented foods. The results of phenotypic analyses showed that the generated yeast strains were piezosensitive and exhibited similar fermentation ability compared with the original sake yeast strain. In addition, primary properties of sake brewed using these strains, such as ethanol concentration, sake meter value and sake flavor compounds, were almost equivalent to those obtained using the sake yeast strain. These results suggest that the piezosensitive strains exhibit brewing characteristics essentially equivalent to those of the sake yeast strain. 相似文献

The formation of Ar and H2 clusters, having up to 900 particles in helium droplets, has been studied via laser induced fluorescence of attached Mg-phthalocyanine (Mg-Pc) molecules. In the experiments, one Mg-Pc molecule in average was added to each He droplet either before or after the cluster species, and the shift of the spectrum of the Mg-Pc molecules was studied as a function of the cluster size. For Ar clusters, about a factor of 2 smaller matrix shift was observed for the late pickup of the Mg-Pc molecules as compared with the prior pickup, indicating that in the former case, the Mg-Pc molecules reside on the surface of the preformed Ar clusters. On the other hand, the spectra of the Mg-Pc molecules attached to H2 clusters are independent of the pickup order, which is consistent with Mg-Pc molecules residing near the center of the H2 clusters in both cases. Therefore H2 clusters remain fluxional in helium droplets at T=0.38 K. No significant differences in the spectra were observed between the para-H2 and ortho-H2 clusters. 相似文献
